Michael WaldoParticipantWent for the first time to Dukes. When we walked in, the interior look and vibe reminded me of a bar and grill or diner, not an upscale seafood restaurant. My wife and I ordered the Halibut with Beurre blanc sauce.
The halibut plating was terrible. The plate was too big, so the over cooked pieces of potato and zucchini looked like they needed company. The halibut was a nice piece. The problem was, we had to use our knives to cut it, way over cooked. One should not have to use a knife to cut Halibut. The fish did taste very good so it was not a bad meal all together. The so called Beurre blanc sauce seemed like the cook just pored a teaspoon of melted butter over the fish and called it good. Beurre blanc sauce is supposed to be a white sauce. Anyway, if the prices were in line with the bar and grill vibe, I would of been OK with the meal. But when I pay $36 for a fish dinner, I expect way more then what I was presented. I did not complain because as I said, the meal was OK. Just over priced. You are paying for the location of course.February 19, 2016 at 5:35 pm #834533
JanSParticipantSecond: Rants and Raves rules. This folds in what had been in a sticky on that section index (little-seen because most use the forum home page rather than the forum section indexes).
If you are posting a rant about a business, YOU MUST SAY WHAT STEPS YOU TOOK FIRST TO NOTIFY ITS OWNERSHIP/MANAGEMENT. If you took those steps and still want to tell the world, fine, but this is NOT the place to come just to rag on a business without having let them know directly.
If you tried but could not get through – include that info, because that’s a helpful part of your story.
If you feel your safety or security is in jeopardy if you tell them, that sounds like grounds for a news story rather than a forum post and you are welcome to e-mail us – editor@westseattleblog.com is the address. (Or use the “contact” tab atop all WSB pages for other forms of contact, including phone.)

JoBParticipantMichael Waldo..
Jan is right.. the rant and rave section is not the place for this review.
cut and paste your rant and move it to Restaurant reviews where it belongs.
Duke’s needs to hear this. I used to love Duke’s but i don’t go there any more for the same reasons that you found yourself unimpressed.

wsea98116ParticipantJoB- did you approach Dukes and tell them you are unimpressed for the sane reasons as Micael Waldo, and give them the opportunity to impress you? What action did they take? Did Dukes attempt to rectify the situation? Were you satisfied by their attempts to resolve, or did you offer them any recommendations to better serve you? If your security is in question, you may wish to join the Dukes protection program.

Michael WaldoParticipantThis is not in the Rant forum, I considered this a restaurant review, appropriate for the Food forum. Perhaps I should not of used the word “ran”. Replace it with the word “Review”.

JanSParticipantwsea98116…what is your problem. JoB simply made a statement..she is/was not the OP. She had no obligation to do any of what you suggested – she didn’t post her unhappiness here, simply agreed with the OP. It was the OP who posted the “rant”, now “review”. Since it was titled a “rant”…I simply mentioned the rules. So..why be snarky to JoB? Because it’s the “in” thing to do”? A boring Saturday night?

JoBParticipantwsea98116
:-) .. as it turns out i did let the management at the Duke’s on Alki know that i was not impressed with their food the last time i ate there…
although i will confess that we just let it go with the chirpy waitress last time we ate lunch at the Duke’s on the waterfront in Tacoma.
since then.. we have made better choices… ;-)
I am still tempted by the rooftop patio at Dukes on a fine summer’s day and have been known to succumb to that temptation.. but i no longer go there for the food :(
i don’t think i will have need of the Duke’s protection program as i still recommend their patio….. but thanks for your concern

wsea98116ParticipantJanS- this entire thread is snarky- from the Beurre sauce, to you beating OP over the head with the rules (do you really need to address his possible security concerns?), and JoB’s compulsion to reiterate what you posted- while also making a Dukes neg (although, I did think her reply to my post was well played).
So, no- I’m not trying to be fashionably snarky- it all just seems a bit over the top, and I felt my input was desperately wanted/needed here.
You’re welcome!February 21, 2016 at 1:24 pm #834686
JanSParticipantMichael…sorry for the mistake on my part…. I saw the title RANT, and misunderstood where it was posted. Did you speak with the chef, or management, etc? Just curious as to their answer if you did. The Dukes on Alki always came across to me as being more of a beachy restaurant, casual, not white tableclothy…sorry your food was not to your liking, as dollars for this kind of entertainment can be very dear to many of us.

JanSParticipantwsea98116 “and I felt my input was desperately wanted/needed here.
You’re welcome!” can I use that as my excuse, too?February 21, 2016 at 3:45 pm #834691
wsea98116ParticipantHaha! Of course..

Michael WaldoParticipantAnyway, like I said, if the blog had an edit button, like Facebook does, I would change “Rant” to “Review”. Rant is a bit to harsh. Like I said, I did not need to talk to anyone there as the meal was not horrible.
Just over priced for what we got. I know now we paid for the location, not the quality of the food. As you said JanS, the vibe and look is a casual, beachie place but the prices are white linen.February 22, 2016 at 9:26 am #834765
JoBParticipantMichael waldo…
if you happen to be at the beach in the summertime and see that there are tables open on the upstairs outdoor patio … grab one. there is no better seat on Alki and everything tastes better on a deck overlooking the sound.February 23, 2016 at 12:20 am #834836
JanSParticipantagreed…the view from up there is wonderful…accompanied by some wine, a bowl of chowder, maybe a salad or some clams…yummy…nice way to spend a late lunch
