SarahScootParticipantI pulled into a busy Trader Joe’s parking lot today, Jan. 12, around 11:00 AM. Spaces are at a premium. Scouting around for something that might be empty, I come across this at the rear of the lot:
But hey; no babies left inside!
January 12, 2013 at 8:36 pm #782745
JKBParticipantDid you check in the trunk?
January 12, 2013 at 8:37 pm #782746
funkietooParticipanteither the person has no idea how to park/drive, or they are terrified the someone may bump their precious car. If that is the case, don’t own a car that you’re worried about.
January 12, 2013 at 8:47 pm #782747
FilbertMemberI’ve found that there’s usually enough space left by the driver’s door to park my motorcycle.
The best part, if they want to have a discussion, I get to call their precious prius a gas-guzzler (compared to my 70+mpg).
January 12, 2013 at 9:39 pm #782748
CMPParticipantI’m not surprised. Most Prius drivers can’t drive well and they clearly can’t park well either. But hey, they’re saving the environment!

miwsParticipantSemi-off topic; earlier last year, when I first moved into transitional housing in Pioneer Square and was using building elevators and escalators to avoid the hills to get to the library, I came up with the idea for my own Northwest Profile; “Hill Avoiding Guy”.
I considered offering the idea up to the insurance Company, especially since one of the building I regularly shortcut through has, in recent years, taken on the name of an insurance company.
I even poked around, on occasion, their website, and Google, hoping to find out where I might propose this idea.
Literally months later, I realized the Building I was cutting through, was Safeco Plaza, (the former 50 story Seafirst Building) and the NW Profiles company, was Pemco.

RainierMemberHaha miws, that’s a tactic that never would have crossed my mind!
January 13, 2013 at 6:20 am #782752
datamuseParticipantHey, just cause I’m from the east coast doesn’t mean I drive *badly*, CMP.
January 14, 2013 at 4:30 am #782753
sbreParticipantFilbert you may out MPG a hybrid however that is only half the battle, the other half being emissions.
Since they have the ability to travel without emitting toxins into the environment, then they have one up on you.
January 14, 2013 at 5:14 am #782754
shed22ParticipantI drove a Prius for many years and never took up two spaces. I now drive a Fiat 500. Larger rides somehow feel it necessary to block me in. Can you please stop that? Thank you.
January 14, 2013 at 5:24 am #782755
FilbertMemberNobody that parks like that will ever have one up on me.
Good news, though, you win the smug-off!
January 14, 2013 at 6:09 am #782756
JKBParticipantsbre: how does that work? Emissions come directly from burning fuel. How does miles-per-gallon differ from miles-per-pollution?
January 14, 2013 at 4:38 pm #782757
SarahScootParticipantMy husband at one point printed out a stack of “you park like an ***hole” slips on which one could check off the transgression, and leave the slip under the offender’s windshield wiper. It was mostly a joke, and we never actually used them. Finally I tossed them in the recycling a few months back.
But for this person… I would have used one.

I WonderMemberThat ranks right up there with parking rants about people not knowing which way to turn their front wheels when parking on a hill.
There is a great store in Fremont that has those note sticker “compliments” for all sorts of practices, hillarious!

SeekingEurosParticipantGreenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are calculated per gallon of fuel. Criteria pollutants, such as CO, Ozone (VOC and NOx) are based on the engine cleanness. Criteria pollutants are the ones you breath. Motorcycles are one step above lawn mowers/ leaf lowers, which (unless electric) are worse.. That Prius beats the motor cycle hands down, except for GHG.
January 14, 2013 at 9:03 pm #782760
SarahScootParticipantTo clarify: two-stroke engines are bad in general when it comes to emissions.
Four-stroke engines, which some motorcycles do have (my scooter included, and yes, a scooter is a motorcycle) are just as clean as cars. And my 150cc scooter gets ~100 mpg.
Unfortunately I have not been on my scooter in quite some time, due to pregnancy and now having a young infant…
Hey, anyone want to buy an awesome scooter? ;-)
January 15, 2013 at 3:29 am #782761
JKBParticipantmmm, good point about two-stroke engines. My claim that miles-per-emission and miles-per-gallon only works for engine/exhaust systems that do complete combustion, so that the exhaust is all CO2. Which a car typically is.
January 15, 2013 at 5:12 am #782762
happywalkerParticipantArrogance, plain and simple. No two ways around it. Same people that cut in front of you while driving after you have waited your turn because they can.
January 15, 2013 at 5:03 pm #782763
SarahScootParticipantFilbert, I realized I neglected to express my pleasure over your initial comment in this thread. It earned a big out-loud laugh from me. I will be thrilled if I ever see you (or anyone else) do that!
Speaking of motorcycles and parking spaces: ever been confronted for taking a “car” parking space? I had someone once try to tell me that I had no right taking up a “car” space (at PCC, of all places). Uh, they’re parking spaces that are designed for cars to fit into, but there’s no requirement that the vehicle parking there actually fill the space. I told the woman that I am entitled to, and in fact required to, park in a true parking space just like any car. I don’t think she believed me, but she dropped it. :-

DBPMemberTrashing Priuses because one driver double parked? That’s a stretch.
I’ve seen far more serious problems being caused by big, gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs than by these dinky little hybrids. There’s a traffic island at the end of my street, frinstance, and three or four times a year someone drives right over it, knocking down trees and signs and chewing up the flowers.
When I go over to check out the damage, it’s not Prius tracks I see.
January 15, 2013 at 8:50 pm #782765
datamuseParticipantThat’s cause a Prius can’t jump the curb.
Believe me, I’ve tried. ;)
Sometimes I miss having a truck…
January 15, 2013 at 8:59 pm #782766
DBPMemberStick with the Prius, dat. If you feel like steppin’ out once in a while, go to the U-Haul place.
January 15, 2013 at 9:04 pm #782767
datamuseParticipantIt’s cool, my husband, the Super Long Coffee Orderer, drives a Volvo XC-90. (Even after 16 years I remain a Confused East Coast Transplant.)
January 15, 2013 at 9:36 pm #782768
SarahScootParticipantI’m probably most like “Type ‘A’ Yoga Girl,” except that I’m too type A for most yoga. :-
