Does anyone have a photo of when there were two Starbucks, one right across the street from another? I would love that pic.

Wasn’t the one across the street a Tully’s?

Sue, you are correct! The At&t store used to be a Tully’s.

Yes, and for awhile, I guess after Starbucks acquired Tully’s, it was a Sbux Cafe. I think they served sandwiches, and probably pastries.

Starbucks never purchased/acquired Tully’s. Maybe you are thinking of Seattle’s Best? ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tully’s_Coffee

I have lived in WS since 2001 and have never seen another Starbucks in Morgan Junction. It was a Tully’s and a Starbucks.

Nope, it was briefly a Starbucks Cafe as Mike notes above. I went from one to the other one day, just to say I went to a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks. It wasn’t there long, but it sure was hilarious while it was there. Soon after it was turned into a Tully’s. I cannot for the life of me recall what year it was, though. *edited to add, I would imagine one of the longtime employees of the Thriftway would recall what year that was*

Thanks, Shawn. I was going by (rather fuzzy) memory. Plus, as noted in HM’s comment, I was wrong on the order of the tenants as well.

Yeah, HM, I used to be so good at remembering particulars on what happened, and when, often by having something else to associate it with, but no more….

Now I really want to know. I just emailed a friend of mine who works at Sbux corporate. I bet someone there remembers. :)

Wow, you’re correct the former Tully’s being a Starbucks. The store was only open for a year, closing in Dec. 1999.

    My god. That long ago?!?

Okay, it’s coming back to me now, Sbux was the first tenant there, when the “new” Thriftway opened up, along with that little building.

It was a “Café Starbucks.” Short-lived concept they tested. And indeed, it was where the cell store is now. Story from when it closed in 2000:

(Long before WSB, but we live about a mile south and have long passed by the corner at least once a day.)

    (And, sorry, no photo.)

I wasn’t able to find a pic; the Assessor’s website still has a pic of the Tully’s even tho the AT&T store has been there for ages. I was able to find a letter dated March 24, 1998 on the DPD website that assigned the address [of the old Tradewell store] of ‘6500 California Ave. SW’ to the ‘tenant space’ to be occupied by ‘Starbucks.’ Google uses 4205 SW Morgan St. for the tenant space. The lot actually incorporates several addresses; there seems to be little consistency in how the addresses are used, even in official documents.

In the original site plan (from the 1996 traffic study), there was no corner store there. The permit info is pretty lacking on that location, so I don’t know when or why the stand-alone space was added, although I know it was done before final designs. Despite the extensive remodeling to turn it from a Starbuck’s Café to a Tully’s and then to an AT&T store, there are no remodeling permits, except for the AT&T sign, and therefore, no pictures.

miws, do you remember what used to be on that property in addition to the Thriftway? I had completely forgotten. hint: it moved across the street.

metrognome, yes I do remember what was there and visited both locations anywhere from occasionally to regularly, over the years.

I thought about mentioning this above, and should have, regarding the corner store; there was a bit of I guess what could be described as controversy, because the City was insistent that a small structure be built there, because they wanted to get away from the large parking lot with the store all the way at the back look; kind of trying to avoid the strip mall look. A rather extreme, perhaps, example of that was the old Schuck’s Auto Parts/Hancock Fabrics lot, a former grocery store, on the NW corner of Fauntleroy & Alaska.

Of course, Thriftway wanted, and sorely needed, as much space as possible for customer parking. This was a few years before landowner Jorve bought the property immediately south of Thriftway on 42nd, and had the house that was there moved in order to expand their parking. I’m not sure how far back that part had been planned and guess it’s possible that they thought of it once they found out they had no choice but to include the smaller structure.

Metrognome and Mike – I too recall what other building was in the parking lot! Took a little trip in the wayback machine when I read your post. I remember being afraid it was going to go up in a blaze of alcohol-fueled glory the night of the big fire. :D

I remember the other building. Why do I want there to be a fish store back there there, too?

Gina, I’m drawing a blank on the fish store. When was that there, and are you talking about a tropical fish store, or a fish market?

Was the liquor store building rebuilt in the late 80’s, used to be liquor store and small something else store, fish supplies? Store was rebuilt as a bigger building. Then the fire in the 90s at Tradewell/Thriftway (lost track of when the name switched, the new liquor store was torn down.

Or I am confusing this with Larry’s Market/Fred Meyer on Roxbury?

I was wondering if you were talking about the Marketime-Fred Meyer/Larry’s building on Roxbury. B&D Aquarium moved there after 35th & Roxbury, and before White Center.

But, now that you mention it, I vaguely remember a remodel of the liquor store in the ’80’s and an even vaguer memory of another little shop in the same building, but couldn’t tell you what was in there.

well, thanks to a bout of insomnia, I was able to find definitive proof that the corner structure was indeed a Starbucks Café. It’s not a photo, unfortunately:

    http://web6.seattle.gov/DPD/PermitStatus/Project.aspx?id=9803506

If you click on the address, it will take you to the permit page, which includes permits from the fire (March, 1997) forward.

I was went through the recorded deeds for the property; the liquor store is mentioned but there is no mention of any other business (there is a deed for something involving natural gas appliances, but a copy isn’t available.) I moved to MJ in mid-1992; I went to the Tway, which was only 2 blocks from my condo, only once — it was a nightmare for someone using a wheelchair. I vaguely ‘remember’ another small store besides the liquor store, but I might be thinking of the mini-mini-mall to the south.

btw, the MJ Tradewell opened ‘in its present location’ in May 1955, per a 1962 WS Herald article about the 500 lb. cake (made at MJ Bakery and transported to the TW in pieces) to be served to customers. Anyone remember Tradewell’s ‘Mr. Courtesy’?
