mellaw6565MemberJust when we had given up all hope, our beloved Max was found yesterday near Chief Sealth H.S. and taken care of by two kind strangers last night until we were contacted today. We now have tears of joy instead of mourning!!
Max is home and doing well with his newly clipped wings:) No more outings for him – we have learned our lesson about opening a door when he is out for even a second!!
Thanks again for everyone’s support – I’m proud to have such great neighbors!

RainyDay1235MemberYEA!! I know how you feel when my lost dog came home a few weeks back – with the help of the West Seattle Blog I might add….CONGRATS!!

GenHillOneParticipantmellaw6565 – you have asolutely made my day! I was the shopper who saw the found poster at Pet Pros (Westwood) and was there when the gal called you. I got very excited when I saw the sign with yesterday’s date and a promising location. I am SO glad it worked out. Kudos to the two kind strangers for their efforts and to PP for placing those flyers on the door…a reminder that they are always worth reading. Yay Max!!

mellaw6565MemberFunny that you mention that RainyDay – an African Grey parrot was united recently with his owner in Tokyo after he escaped and when found began reciting his address and phone number! I think I will start putting it in a song for mine:)

soclwrkrinmotnMemberHurrah! The feathered boy is back home! What a traveler…

charlabobParticipantThat’s great (and I knew it — I have no psychic ability except for found “objects” — I knew he wasn’t gone.)
Did he learn any new words? Think of what he could tell you. And he’ll have lots of time, since he obviously won’t be leaving home again. :-)

JeannieParticipantWow! This made my day – tomorrow is my birthday, and this is a great gift. I am so delighted! Although people on this thread haven’t met the Amazing Max, I think the little bird touched our hearts. I admit I shed some tears last night, thinking there was little hope he’s be found.
By the way, in honor of Mighty Max’s return, I am making a donation to Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, a great non-profit organization based in the Bay Area. They started out as Mickaboo Cockatiel Rescue, but now there are helping all kinds of pet birds. If anyone would like to make a donation (even a small one) in honor of Max’s return, you can check out their site at:
Or make a donation to whatever animal-help group you wish.

KayleighMemberI’m so glad. :-) And glad that this board can help with lost pets.

mellaw6565MemberUpdate – Max is sitting pretty in his cage, no worse for wear and a little cockier too! He ate a ton of his favorite foods when he got home and then snuggled up to his little stuffed bear companion in his cage:)He’s no longer whistling “Leave it to Beaver” as I think I wore that one out trying to catch him over two days, but he is showing some interest in a new song from the TV show “I Dream of Genie” – maybe some relation to his escape???
Jeannie – great idea for the donation! Even better would be an adoption for anyone interested in getting a pet bird – there are some great local rescues as well, from parakeets to large parrots. And given that large parrots can outlive their human masters, it is important to care for those senior parrots who have lost their older owners. Birds make great pets and family members with the right care and attention, so I encourage anyone to check out petfinder.org to find their next feathered friend.
Anyway – tears of joy for us today! If only Max could tell his story………well, maybe as his “mom” I don’t want to know! LOL
Kayleigh – I agree; this board connects this community in a great way when a pet is lost because we can focus on the geographic area where the pet will most likely be found. It’s a great system with great people:)

JeannieParticipantUh-oh! I had a mental image of Max meeting up with a cute robin while he was out and about. I’ll keep my eye out for baby “rob-atiels”!
Seriously, I agree about adopting a bird. They are more demanding (and intelligent) than many people realize, but they are an absolute joy.

miwsParticipantYay!! Welcome home, Max! I so very happy to hear this.
.
This incident actually made me think back to the summer of’92 when I went down to visit my brother and family in Imperial Beach (San Diego) California.
.
They had a bird feeder outside of one of the windows of their condo. During the time of my visit, there was a little blue budgie out there everyday feeding with the wild birds. He was just having a good ol’ time chowing down with his buddies!
.
I wondered what the wild birds “thought” of him. Did they consider him one of their own? Did they notice he looked different? Did they think he was a pain in the butt? Did they even care?
.
I know I’m essentially talking human emotions here, but with this little guy enjoying feeding with the other birds, and that a couple of budgies that I had, at seperate times, when I lived in my house, going nuts seeing the wild birds outside, I don’t think that it’s too far-fetched to think that the wild birds would have some kind of reaction to the budgie, even if they weren’t beating him up, or otherwise outwardly showing any kind of reaction.
.

mellaw6565MemberActually Mike, we thought about that too! While we watched him for hours in the trees this weekend, it was funny to see how he reacted to different birds. He seemed to like the starlings and they didn’t seem to mind him, but you could tell they were kind of checking him out, especially since he was making so much noise in the trees. However, when the crows flew by he was deathly quiet (for good reason). We thought that eventually if he got the hang of surviving in the wild he would be an honorary starling.
Yesterday, when we thought he was “gone”, we talked about how his last hours were spent as a wild bird – taking in the scenery and soaring with the wind underneath. Looking at him today, I think some of that he enjoyed, and now we wonder if he will be “sad” when he sees other birds flying outside and it’s not him. Very anthropomorphic of us, but knowing how intelligent they are sometimes, you have to wonder.
However, in the end run I think the prospect of getting “Baked Cheetos” on a regular basis will keep him wanting to come back home:) Maybe he’ll tease the starlings with it through the window:)

JeraldParticipantHooray!
Years ago, I found a parakeet in Lincoln Park by Colman Pool. Managed to grab it when it dropped to the ground. Held onto him, shoved under my shirt. He screamed like crazy as I walked all the way back to the south parking lot. Lots of strange looks from the parties at the picnic shelters. Never found his owner, so kept him many years till he died (sniff).
Now I have a hand-me-down parrot and need to get his wings clipped. Where does one get that done, does anyone know?
June 25, 2008 at 6:38 pm #628701
mellaw6565MemberJerald – many veterinarians’ office will do it for a small fee, as well as some dog groomers who know birds. It’s actually a very simple and painless action – it took us less than 60 seconds to clip Max’s wings yesterday. It just takes two people. I would be more than willing to come over and help you/show you how to do it if you’d like. I taught my 7th grade students how to do it several years back and they thought it was the coolest thing!
