Has anyone out there used Metro Paint (the recycled paint that they sell at Second Use) as an exterior paint? Supposedly it can be used for either interior or exterior, and I don’t have a lot of house paint experience but that sounds a little optimistic to me. Has anyone out there used it as exterior house paint? I’d be so grateful for any experiences you’re willing to share. Thanks!

I’m no professional painter, but I have used Metro Paint on the exterior of 2 houses now. I painted my first house (in the Portland Area) barn red over 10 years ago. When I go back to visit Portland, it’s till looking great. I used the yellow on my current house and I expect it to last at least 15 years.

If you are going to spray (and you would want to with the exterior of your house), keep in mind that Metro paint is THICK. You will need to thin it some (or a lot) to get it to work with the sprayer. The red paint was like a loose pudding. The more recent yellow was a bit thinner, but even then it was on the thick side as paint goes.

If you are planning on paining the outside, buy more than you think you need….and then another 5 gallons. I have a 2K sqft house (2 story), and it took between 15 and 20 gallons for the exterior. Of course, I thinned it and put 2 coats on, but if your exterior is thirsty, buy extra. At the price they are selling it at, buying extra is EASY!.

I actually keep several gallons of the Metro white on hand as a primer or a base for muted colors as well. Gonna take 3 gallons of white and add a bit of deep purple to get a muted purple for my girls bedroom here soon. If you aren’t picky about getting EXACTLY the PERFECT shade, play with a couple of combinations of white and color and see what you like. The factory in Portland can suggest combinations as well, if you like.

All around great stuff. I actually made an account at this website just to answer your question. Yeah….it’s that good. And the price makes it awesome.

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, but thanks so much for weighing in! That’s really helpful to know.
