JoBParticipantTonya42…
from your other posts.. i can see why you would favor John Bolton. He’s just the guy to round out McCain’s ticket in the fall:)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._Bolton
Just one of his many accomplishments…
“Bolton was instrumental in derailing a 2001 biological weapons conference in Geneva convened to endorse a UN proposal to enforce the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention. “U.S. officials, led by Bolton, argued that the plan would have put U.S. national security at risk by allowing spot inspections of suspected U.S. weapons sites, despite the fact that the U.S. claims not to have carried out any research for offensive purposes since 1969.”[16]
Also in 2002, Bolton is said to have flown to Europe to demand the resignation of Jose Bustani, head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and to have orchestrated his removal at a special session of the organization.[citation needed] The United Nations’ highest administrative tribunal later condemned the action as an “unacceptable violation” of principles protecting international civil servants. Bustani had been unanimously re-elected for a four-year term — with strong U.S. support — in May 2000, and in 2001 was praised for his leadership by Colin Powell.[17]
He also pushed for reduced funding for the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction program to halt the proliferation of nuclear materials.[18] At the same time, he was involved in the implementation of the Proliferation Security Initiative, working with a number of countries to intercept the trafficking in weapons of mass destruction and in materials for use in building nuclear weapons. Following one such interception at sea, Libya made an agreement with the U.K. and the U.S. to dismantle its nuclear weapons industry.”
And we thought his work for the think tank was enough;-0

JanSParticipant“think tank”…always loved that term. Is the emphasis on “Think”? or is it on “tank”? I sometimes wonder…

Tonya42MemberBolton did a lot of good work and he actually made the UN work, many select groups opposed the concept so I do understand that certain people dislike him.

AnonymousInactiveTonya42, are you saying if we dislike Bolton, we dislike the concept of the UN working? Or maybe we all dislike working in general? I’m trying to follow you, but it just sounds like a back-handed slam, not an opinion.

charlabobParticipantNoooo, not to worry: he only made the bottom six floors work — he wanted to lop off the top; six. An unfortunate image, given what happened to the World Trade Center two years later.

JenVMemberdirect quote from House: “we’re afraid that people like you make your decisions based on stupidity and unfounded statements and can possibly place someone in the White House that doesn’t belong there.”
um….like the person who has been in there for the last 7 years? honestly. I don’t know how you repugs can look in the mirror after that one. Do you honestly feel pride when you think of the president you elected?
House, unless your daddy is rich and powerful, I don’t see you as anyone’s running mate.
that being said: Fred Thompson? isn’t he even *older* than McSame? What will their campaign slogan be – “GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN WHIPPERSNAPPERS!” ?

JoBParticipantJenV…
ok.. i admit.. i would be sorely tempted by the campaign slogan “GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN WHIPPERSNAPPERS!” ?
But only if it was someone else’s:)
Tonya42…
you said… “he actually made the UN work”
How is it that you think he actually made the U N work?
I have been sitting here trying to visualize the scenario that fits that statement… and i think i need help.

No JT, that is my take on his performance, not a “back-handed slam”. All my slams will be face forward. :)
Bolton cut thru a lot of red tape and actually got some things done.
May 20, 2008 at 9:56 pm #623228
AnonymousInactiveTonya42, you’re hurting my head. I can’t remember what I was thinking this morning, let alone a week ago :)
My question was, what does this mean *many select groups opposed the concept* in reference to making things work. Who opposes that concept? I like things to work.

KenParticipantOh Please, please, please, choose John Bolton as McCain’s running mate.
The commercials will be extremely entertaining.
:)

HuindekmiParticipantNahhhh… He should choose Michael Bolton.
Maybe this topic should be moved to the West Seattle Jobs Offered forum.

WSMomParticipantLOL, Michael Bolton, you crack me up!!

Tonya42MemberGroups of people within the UN, if you want specifics. He knew the UN inside and out and in my opinion represented the kind of honor that was behind the original idea or concept of the organization.
He was sent there precisely to break up logjams and ram through reforms that prevented the UN from doing anything of substance. And he was sucssessful.
He was able to see what the UN actually is rather than what everyone wants to pretend it is. He saw the UN not as a group of people with good intentions but a group of different agencies with different agendas, some of which are relatively effective and some of which are ineffective or even dangerous…
The trouble with many UN defenders is that they refuse to see this fundamental problem, and demand a constantly expanding role for the United Nations without explaining how its lack of democratic accountability is to be addressed.
To be blunt I am talking about 90% of the members of the UN who oppose Bolton and his style of demanding results.
He accomplished a great deal for various causes, Darfur, Aids, the Congo etc.
Bolton got more done in his short time there than corrupt and useless secretary general Kofi did in his entire stay.

Boltons greatest hits. From The Nation and sure to differ from the version at the World Nut daily.
Bring him on as VP, it will be like soldering McCain to Bush’s waistband.
How are you 28%’ers planning on dealing with that?
May 22, 2008 at 9:10 pm #623234
Tonya42MemberI try not read the Nation after I’ve eaten. Besides that would be like me using an article written by Ann Coulter….
not a whole lot of objectivity there if that was your goal.
