MichellMemberWe have recently added a Newfoundland dog to our family. I am looking for recommendations for a Vet that specializes in or sees a lot of large breed dogs and a dog grooming services for large and hairy dogs. If you have any advice (good or bad) please share.
Thanks!

JimmyGMemberI can’t recommend Dr. Kraabel at Lien Animal Clinic (on SW Alaska) enough. I’ve taken my dogs (all large ones) there for over 10 years. Two of my friends with large dogs see him also.
Groomer: when we picked up our latest Golden Retriever rescue he was covered in mats and a real mess after living in an outdoor holding kennel for over 3 months. The groomers at The Wash Dog (on California near Fauntleroy) did a wonderful job of getting him presentable.
PS I love Newfies, someday maybe I’ll get to have one.

WSMomParticipantHi Michell:
We have a wonderful Newfy/lab/golden mix dog that we take to Petco for grooming. We spend extra for the “shed-free” process where they are able (miraculously) to get all of the underfur removed. He’s a really old dog and his coat is beautiful. We were swimming in dog fur before we started having the extra process done. Good luck with your new big bear of a dog. We love our boy!

MichellMemberJimmyG – So happy to see your rec! We take our cats to Lien, but this is our first dog so I wasn’t sure.
Thanks again.

hopeyParticipantAnother vet recommendation: I am continually impressed with Dr. Cary Waterhouse at VCA West Seattle on California. He is really on the ball, and if he doesn’t know something off the top of his head, he does the appropriate research & gets second opinions. We have two standard-sized Labradoodles. While not as large as Newfies, they are decent sized dogs and Dr. Waterhouse has been great with them.
I’ve taken my girls to Canine Casa next to Endolyne Joe’s in Fauntleroy (before I began learning to do the grooming myself), and they did a great job, but they do seem to focus on smaller dogs.

sanMemberLien Animal Clinic is the BEST! I would highly suggest them. They are all just wonderful!

andreaParticipantI 2nd the recommendation for The Wash Dog on California Ave near the Morgan Junction. We take our two big boys there, a Siberian Husky and a German Shepahrd mix, and they treat them and all of their flying fur wonderfully.
And as for Petco’s grooming dept, we stopped using them because they were always busy, running late, overbooked, and cancelling appt’s. The clincher for me was when they explained that they blowdry the dogs by locking them in those cramped back kennels, turning a hairdryer on them, and leaving them until they were dry . No wonder my dogs came out dehydrated and anxious.

littlebrowndogParticipantHave you tried a brush called a Furminator? Check it out online. A little spendy, but a bit cheaper at Costco or Amazon.com. Many groomers use it. It doesn’t work for all types of coats, not poodles or terriers that have to be stripped, etc., but works absolute wonders on most straight coats. The pictures on their website of dogs surrounded by heaps of hair are accurate. It does a miraculous job on our Lab, who is always shedding, and I have seen it do incredibly well on a lot of other dogs. The site lists breeds of dogs that it works on. It does say that it will work on a sheltie, but my sheltie’s breeder recommended against it because it could break the hairs. But a sheltie is a rough coated dog, and I think that is the difference.

kParticipantWe have used West Seattle Veterinary Clinic VCA since adopting our dog in 2006. In recent months we have had incidents that result in our leaving that clinic. One involved a simple blood draw that turned ugly. It was a horrible situation and one in which I cannot give the clinic another chance. The other incident was our need to get our dog’s prescription in order to get it filled online. That was another debacle with their lack of cooperation. I don’t want to go into too much detail on what happened with our pet, but be advised, it was a BAD experience that was not made right.

AnonymousInactiveHmmm…thanks for hte info, k. We just moved over here and I did take our cat to West Seattle, and I was happy with the service, but it’s good to know. Lien is closer to our place though…hmm, I wonder.
For what it’s worth, I’m reading this post because we have a 161-pound fluffy mastiff!

FranciParticipantI don’t have a dog, but I have been very happy with the care my cats have received at West Seattle Animal Hospital (Jefferson Square). I have seen large dogs there too.

felicialhMemberwe take our dog to Stella Ruffington (on California next to Cafe Ladro), they used to be named The Tail Wag. They are wonderful and I have seen some big dogs with lots of hair coming out of there. Our dog has a decent amount of hair and they always do a nice job. But they are busy so it may take a couple weeks to get in, we always schedule for the next apt when we pick up our dog from his grooming.
