The Horror of it All !May 27, 2016 at 12:45 am #845518
dobroParticipantThis is a person who clearly has no understanding of anything Bernie Sanders ever said. Please try to educate your children with truthful statements and compassion rather than uninformed blithering about a political figure whose ideas you don’t comprehend. Thanks.

anonymeParticipant“Their”, not “there”, and improper use of caps. Education, indeed.
Speaking of hallucination, it’s gut wrenching to see how many working people have once again swallowed the propaganda that drives them to vote against their own interests while supporting a welfare state for the rich. What an ugly country we have become.May 27, 2016 at 7:59 am #845545
BonnieParticipantThis is a really interesting article that I came across. It’s long but worth the read. http://www.stirjournal.com/2016/04/01/i-know-why-poor-whites-chant-trump-trump-trump/

LTParticipantI am a full-time working mother with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. I live in Seattle, in a two income household and I surprisingly live paycheck to paycheck. The level of wealth inequality in our country is disastrous. The cost of childcare, for one child, is more than half of my mortgage. I did not get any paychecks when I “decided” to take 12 weeks of maternity leave to nurture and nurse my infant daughter. I don’t have any extra money to save for my daughter’s future college expenses. We are told that if we work hard our entire lives that we can live the American dream, we can buy a house, we can save for our future, we can have ample time to spend with our families. What a lie. I don’t want my daughter to be in debt before she graduates college and before she has a chance to start a successful career. People are overworked and underpaid. There are many more millions of people who are not even as lucky as I am to have a family, a house, a job and education that was not free.

Betty453ParticipantThis is sad to watch this Liberal infection permeate this latest generation.
Teaching the Classic left wing idea that every Tyrant in History has used to secure power which is that they aren’t prospering because of the ” Rich guy on the Hill ” that has stolen it and that if you give them ( Chavez, Hitler , Stalin etc..) Complete control that they will ” Make it Right “. I would ask if you feel like suckers for believing a former Pornography author that has never had a real job ( Bernie ) but you really are that sad.
Free College ? Really ? If i walked up to any Liberal downtown and was handing out something of significant worth for ” Free ” you would all look over your shoulder and Hopefully ask me if it was Stolen. Yet Someone promising Free College makes sense. See that is what the Liberal sickness does. It makes you deny reality and rationalize things that you normally wouldn’t even consider.
See in the Real world of Economics when something is ” Free ” Demand Skyrockets and Supply plummets. So, What do we do when 30 million more people decide that they want to attend college since it is ” Free ” ? In a Socialist/ Communist system they solve that problem by allowing the Loyal Party members to be first in line and then let the system of payoff’s and corruption handle the rest.
In England they solved this problem by having Children take a test and those that do well get the opportunity to better there lives by attending college and those that don’t do well… Well… Sorry , Here’s a shovel.
Let’s see how that fly’s in Liberal-ville when the test scores reveal that a majority of those given the opportunity of free college are of the Evil white persuasion ? That will certainly Fly won’t it ?
Please help your children out by making them work for there allowance rather than convincing them they deserve it because someone else worked hard and Stole it from them.
This is Sad to watch.May 27, 2016 at 11:03 am #845567

JanSParticipantBetty 453…I find your post offensive and insulting, but you are entitled to that, as I agree with the first Amendment. If someone doesn’t believe what you believe, they’re all stupid? Seriously?

JanSParticipantLT….then throw in one or two medical catastrophies…that’ll kill your “budget” in an instant…and it’s very difficult to come back from that, sometimes. If you have a mortgage, children, it can be devastating, speaking from experience. Financially, it’s very difficult to recover.

LTParticipantJan, yes, I do worry a lot about medical catastrophes and any major issue that may go wrong with my home. I’m not sure I could fully recover and would lose the cash value I have paid into the home if I had to sell quickly.
Betty, I’ve worked very hard, harder than a lot of people to get to where I am today. When I was 18 and I held my mom’s hand as she died from cancer, I didn’t give up on my school or my bills or my health. I kept going because I had a vision of having my own family that I could support financially and emotionally. I am not sure what world you are living in, but you would think in a Capitalist Society, where you have paid your dues and worked tirelessly to put yourself through Bachelor’s school and Master’s School and have been a Structural Engineer for 10 years that you would feel safe from the stigma of losing everything. I’m treading water and if I lost my job due to sickness or an accident or the economy, everything I’ve worked so hard to achieve could be gone in an instant. Are you telling me that the American dream is to work hard to achieve all your dreams but ONLY if your life is free of emergencies or some tragic catastrophe? That’s not the American dream I believe in. I do hope that you do more research, talk to your friends and family and discuss their life hardships to begin to get a picture of the daily struggles people are dealing with. I consider myself in the upper echelon of income even though I am barely holding myself above water.
I also think it would be a valuable experience for you and your kids to go live abroad in a Socialist-Democratic Scandinavian country for a few months and come back to let us know how evil it is.
May 27, 2016 at 1:56 pm #845595
SmittyParticipantLT, you have a mortgage – and a two income household – which is more than most can say in this city. From the sound of it you are relatively young (30?).
We can’t have everything we want right away. Maybe you bought too much home? Maybe you lease new cars every 2 years? Maybe you take expensive vacations? Maybe none of those are the case.
My wife and I struggled until about our early 40’s when after work promotions and cost cutting we finally stopped living check to check. Now we are catching up on retirement savings. It CAN be done, albeit not easily and without sacrifice. Not everyone can be a CEO, and regardless, reducing CEO salaries by 90% won’t make a bit of difference anyway as it’s not a zero sum game.
Just remember that a lot of those high-end German cars are leased by people living in rented housing. You are probably doing way better than you think.

LTParticipantSmitty, I do agree that there is a struggle, but I just didn’t really imagine that after having 10 years of experience in my specialty career that I would still be walking a fine line. My car is very used and gas efficient, I don’t take expensive vacations and I bought far below the market price for West Seattle homes selling today. I am aware that I am doing better than most which makes me want a better system for everyone. We all know that trickle-down doesn’t work. The evidence is there that building your economy from the ground-up strengthens the community and fuels a successful economy.

anonymeParticipantI don’t see free college as being any different than a public K-12 education. If Betty had completed either one, she might be able to present a more rational argument, free of spelling, grammatical, and judgment errors. The United States is no longer the world’s greatest nation, and our declining status has a lot to do with lack of education – not too much of it. More civilized countries, like Sweden and Norway, offer free college. They also are highest on the happiness index. Can’t say that for most Americans these days. The fact is that the safety net and benefits of all kinds have shriveled to nothing, except for the very rich.

JoBParticipantif we stopped giving immensely profitable corporations all our free stuff there would be plenty left to fund things like education…
May 28, 2016 at 12:10 am #845647
dobroParticipant“Free College ? Really ? If i walked up to any Liberal downtown…”
Yes, downtown, where only the liberals go. Oh, I forgot to capitalize the L in Liberal like all the RWNJ emails do. Are people really so dense that they think “free” public education is actually free? Ever hear about “taxes”? We pay taxes and then that money is “redistributed” (as the Liberals would say) for functions that our representatives in Gov’t decide are priorities. Some people think education is a really smart way to use our tax money to improve society for all of us, even the non-liberals. Hence, extending tax funded “free” public education thru college. Sheesh!
Mostly, I just feel sorry for her kids.

mpentoParticipantPrudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
I have looked for Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness only to find a career, a mortgage and managing to keep my head above water. The latter being available to me in such an unpalatable form that it excludes the former. The american dream is being corrupted into the corporation nightmare. I don’t know if I will vote in November but I certainly did not caucus or vote in the primary stuff. Republican or democrat, small handed lying misogynist or lying cuckold lush, tv personality or career politician, they are part of the problem. I include Bernie because he ran as a democrat and now harvests the consequences. They are the weeds that have grown in the vineyard. I am disgusted that they are given the time and attention that they get. It is wrong that we vote with hope instead of consequences. We reward politician promises with our future rather than assessing them on ability and past choices and then wonder how they fooled us again. I can only get some solace in seeing the emptiness in their eyes when they glimpse that they are even more mired in the nightmare than the people that vote for them.
WINTER IS COMINGMay 29, 2016 at 1:24 am #845710
metrognomeParticipantwait for it … wait for it … a federal judge (Gonzalo Curiel) in a [no-]class-action suit has ruled that internal documents from Trump U must be released by June 2 (a separate suit alleging deceptive business practices brought by the NY AG is underway as well.) Trump, citing his comments about the Wall (no, not the Pink Floyd album,) accused the ‘Mexican’ judge of being biased because of his presumed Mexican heritage (let’s see, a square is a wrecked angle, so anyone with a Hispanic sounding name who appears to dislike rump must be Mexican,) Even still, rump said that being presumably Mexican is ‘great’ and ‘fine.’ (The judge was born in Indiana, which in Trumpworld is a ciudad in Mexico.) Trump suggested that the judge recuse himself because he has made so many ‘negative, negative, negative’ rulings that he must be ‘a hater’ of Trump. Due to the code of judicial ethics, the judge cannot respond.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/internal-trump-university-records-must-be-released-federal-judge-rules/ar-BBtB9Lf#image=1 (warning – put your orange-blocking sunglasses on; when I opened this page, it defaulted to a YUGE picture of rump, which is now burned into my retinas. btw, MSN is a great place for articles from a variety of papers that might otherwise charge for viewing articles.)
and, if you feel the American Dream is more of a nightmare, you shouldn’t read this NYT article … how many palatial homes does vulture capitalist Mittens Romney own while he off-shores his money to avoid paying for his fair share of what makes America grate? (yes, the misspelling is purposeful.)
can’t wait for his taxes to be released … anyone remember that the IRS audited Tricky Dick when he was the sitting president? Over 3 years, his income totaled around $900k but he had only paid $6k in federal taxes. He was required to pay something like $450k in taxes, interest and penalties. Spiro got audited too with similar results. This was how the ‘time-honored tradition’ of candidates releasing their returns got started. (thanks to Rachel Maddow!)

JoBParticipantit’s easy to become disillusioned
but anyone who thinks the outcome of this election doesn’t really matter has forgotten that in the end the law of this land is determined by our Supreme Court.the likelihood of four vacancies not including the present one in the next 4 years is pretty high.
better is always better than worse

JanSParticipantif this is what’s happening now, and if the student debt is somehow not contained, what will it be like when small children now are of college age?
May 30, 2016 at 12:01 pm #845835
julie98106ParticipantThanks and well said Betty. You may soon be blocked,I have been for long time periods. Most people with any conservative ideas are literally shredded up.I wish people in Seattle were nicer, but you can see some of these ones are not. I enjoy active online debates, it would be much better without the intellectual elitism.
May 30, 2016 at 1:17 pm #845846
JanSParticipantwell, Julie…the OP was not exactly nice in her post…how can you have a conversation with anyone when they start off denigrating other posters, other people? It IS a two way street, you know.
May 30, 2016 at 4:47 pm #845874
anonymeParticipantJulie, please look up the word “literally”. I haven’t heard of any bodies discovered that have been “shredded up”. And it’s “these”, not “these ones”.
If you prefer to enter only into discussions that are free of intellect, you should have no problem finding some. Alternatively, you and Betty could start one of your own.
I hold some pretty conservative views on certain issues, and I’m not afraid to say so. But when someone initiates a discussion with a post full of wild (unsubstantiated, inaccurate) accusations and assertions, with a healthy dose of proselytizing thrown in for good measure, and does so in a way that is not only factually but grammatically incorrect, then they’ve pretty much asked for any corrections that may come their way. Their, not there.
May 30, 2016 at 6:17 pm #845886
julie98106ParticipantYou guys should get over yourselves. You are intolerant of those who have views other than yours. Are you tolerant of other groups of people who’s ideas you do not appreciate? Why is it OK to be so personally critical of such an articulate person? I am tired of you snobs calling conservative posters trolls. Get used to it. One sure fire way to be blocked on your beloved blog is to support Israel. What does that say about your character? We are at war.
