charlabobParticipantBut KL, and Trisket, why do YOU get to decide what’s ridiculous :-) Sorry, I couldn’t resist — this could go on forever. And probably will.
BTW, NR, if you expect anyone in their right mind to think of you as a minority because you’re a Republican, um, the words “get a grip” leap to mind.
June 28, 2008 at 3:04 pm #628527
TammiWSMemberI think JOB and NR are both more alike then they’d like to admit! :) Why dont you two just meet and hash this out and let the threads be what they are – interesting discussions on the topic at hand?
June 28, 2008 at 4:10 pm #628528
KayleighMemberCharla, I say it’s ridiculous because I’m elitist and smugist. ;-)
June 28, 2008 at 5:59 pm #628529
JoBParticipantTammiWS…
having met her, i am quite sure that NR and i are more alike than not… and there isn’t much to hash out…
June 28, 2008 at 6:34 pm #628530
JoBParticipantOK..
so i thought a minute…
this judgmental thing is something i really don’t admire in the older women in my family.. heck they were judgmental when they were young.. and that is an understatement:(
and it is something i work really hard at in myself.
i don’t mean to be judgmental.. but i think my coping mechanism for being judgmental may come off as badly as the real thing…
i become academic when i think i am about to be judgmental… and i can see where that can come off as condescending.
there is no intent. i am a very kind and generous woman who tries to practice kindness by intention.
I am also a very sick woman some days.. and that may very well undermine any intention i have to speak kindly…
i thought “well now, aren’t you special” pretty kind in comparison to what i thought… and it was.. but not kind enough.
there was probably a better way to get my point across.
We are all adults and this is no sandbox…
the adult versions of liar, crybaby, mommas boy, freak.. and all those other really nasty things that children say to one another are not conducive to conversation… and we have such a unique opportunity to keep this forum one where real conversation happens.
I have had a lifetime of letting such things pass and watching the ultimate destruction of communities that meant something to me as a result. Making peace is too often just sticking the proverbial finger in the dike.
i believe it is part of our responsibility as adults to keep conversation alive… because it is the first step on the road to understanding.
i wish that my talent was to do so with humor. i try.. but i think my humor is often the wry kind.. more of an in joke for those who have tread the paths of misfortune than the hip sarcasm currently in vogue.
you really have to get me:(
so, i flounder.. i dish.. i cajole… i confront… i temper my tongue and still it is often not tempered enough.
for those who read me as judgmental… i can only ask you to give me the benefit of the doubt…
i am doing my best.
most days i wish it was better.

AnonymousInactivecharla – I wouldn’t have thought I would have to explain that, especially to you.
Minority – A smaller party or group opposed to a majority, as in voting or other action.
In the case of *this* forum, that definition seems to fit pretty accurately considering I am one of about two Republicans that post on here.
Kayleigh, I agree. The conversation *was* interesting and I enjoyed it.
soc – I was never insinuating “I” as “myself” having any power. I was meaning “I” as in what I represent.
When you start talking about “Power + Prejudice = Racism”, you are speaking of racism in professional arenas. Is that correct, or are you relating that to individual racism?
June 28, 2008 at 8:21 pm #628532
JoBParticipantNewResident…
if you follow the links that soclwrkinmotn posted, you will find you have a great deal of power that others don’t…
it was illuminating for me.
June 28, 2008 at 9:06 pm #628533
JoBParticipanti had to come back to this..
there is a huge difference between taking a minority position… one that is not as popular… and being a minority.
you choose to take a minority position…
you don’t get to choose your race, skin color, sex or sexual orientation
June 28, 2008 at 9:17 pm #628534
AnonymousInactiveOh for Heaven’s sake, JoB.
I obviously realize that you don’t get to “choose” your race, skin color, sex or sexual orientation.
My political position, in regards to *this* forum, is a minority position.
Do we all feel better now that that has been clarified?
June 28, 2008 at 9:33 pm #628535
JiggersMemberClassism does promote racism.
June 28, 2008 at 11:59 pm #628536
AnonymousInactiveRight, so people who are “classy” are racist?
Or has no one heard the term “classy” on this board?
I really wouldn’t be surprised.
June 29, 2008 at 12:02 am #628537
charlabobParticipantGood grief, NR — there’s no full moon over my house but maybe where you are? I know — this is what passes for humor.
Seriously, since *everything* you post seems to engender responses that you find hurtful or offensive, you might want to consider hanging out in a classier neighborhood.
Might I, once again, suggest http://www.soundpolitics.com. Among other things, they actual banish people who disagree with them. :-)
June 29, 2008 at 12:07 am #628538
barbMemberI’ve sat here and read this whole post, and finally NR has drove me over the edge. NR, classy does not make one racist, and I certainly wouldn’t classify you as “classy”, you have to be the biggest “woe is me” person out there. There is almost not a single forum entry where you do not feel as if everyone is ganging up on you, from the LGBT postings to this racist posting. You may find this terribly hard to believe, but it isn’t always about you. As for being a minority, just because you are one of a couple Republicans (as far as you know) that post here you are not a minority, you are IN the minority.
So I will sit here and wait for your response back about how how you really are a minority because you are a white female Republican, and how you really don’t think it’s all about you.
June 29, 2008 at 12:34 am #628539
AnonymousInactiveHow hypocritical was that statement about class!!!!
I’m really glad that I don’t take myself too seriously.
Barb – Sorry, but your post is pretty much what everyone else says and, therefore, no response is necessary. Again, sorry to disappoint.
What I find the absolute, most hilarious thing about this whole forum (as well as my liberal friends) is how UN-LIBERAL everyone on here is!
Where is the tolerance, open-mindedness, and acceptance?
June 29, 2008 at 12:37 am #628540
AnonymousInactiveOh, I do want to say one thing, barb, I never implied that “class” makes on “racist”. That was a response to SOMEONE else’s post that implied that idea.
Maybe you want to read *everything* before you comment?
June 29, 2008 at 12:44 am #628541
barbMemberNR, as soon as you post something that throws your “no response is necessary” theory out the window, you responded to a post saying that “classism does promote racism” by asking “so people who are ‘classy’ are racist”. Do you even know what classism is? Classy is different from classism.
And I knew that you would want to say “one thing”, because that is what you do. Oh, and could you please stop using the ridiculous “*” around every word you want to overemphasize?
June 29, 2008 at 12:58 am #628542
JiggersMemberCan I have more butter on my popcorn please..
June 29, 2008 at 1:02 am #628543
soclwrkrinmotnMemberVincent: I concede. This IS getting painful. I don’t have the energy to restate the obvious anymore.
June 29, 2008 at 4:07 am #628544
MrJTMemberbarb, be sure to read IN BETWEEN the lines, that seems to be where NR makes her finest points.
June 29, 2008 at 5:54 am #628545
JoBParticipantNewResident..
i guess i am not sure what you think tolerance means…
if it means that we should let other people live the life style they choose without expecting them to live ours.. then speaking for myself.. i am incredibly tolerant.
if it means that i should let you voice your opinions without challenging them.. then, yes.. i am intolerant.
if it means that while defending yourself, you should be able to call other people names, then i am very intolerant.
if it means that while living your lifestyle you should be able to injure me or others.. then i am incredibly intolerant.
who thought i would refer to websters so much…
if you are referring to the capacity to endure pain and hardship… my doctors tell me i am far too good at it…
but enduring the pain and hardship of what this conversation has become is stretching even my limits.
i am off to bed.
June 29, 2008 at 7:42 am #628546
AnonymousInactiveWhen did I call anyone “names”, JoB?
Well, aren’t you special. You were never required to apologize to me, yet, I was required to apologize to JenV (for WHAT, I have NO idea).
Get a grip!
June 30, 2008 at 3:51 am #628547
TheHouseMember“those who have opted out of the forum for a while have done so because of rudeness.. not because they are incapable of listening to or understanding an opposing point of view”
JoB, I kind of thought this was directed at me and thought I’d let you know that I was camping in the Cascades the past 3 days….that’s why I’ve been inactive.
As for the rest of these posts above, I’ve read through them all and shake my head.
Do I think I’m elitist? No, but sometime I do think that I’m a brand new Buzz Lightyear blogging in the Land of Misfit Toys.
June 30, 2008 at 4:57 am #628548
JanSParticipantand how were the Cascades? perfect time to go camping…bet it was just beautiful :)
you? rude? never !!!! ;-)
June 30, 2008 at 5:15 am #628549
JoBParticipantsorry house.. i hadn’t missed you:(
June 30, 2008 at 5:24 am #628550
AnonymousInactiveJoB – That’s nice.
