JoBParticipantOk.. now we’re getting somewhere…
it sounds as though the 30th on a sunday afternoon might not be optimal… what would?
i didn’t realize the last weekend of the month conflicted with Spring Break….
I want to do this this month… we want the matching food bank dollars… besides, mid-month in April is the community recognition awards…
we might be able to do this next weekend during the day (i can throw events like this together pretty fast and we have great advertising here)… i just don’t know what the st paddy’s day hoohaaa is like here in west seattle… does it last all weekend?
if it would work.. making it an adult friendly St Paddy’s Day event might be fun…
and what about palm sunday weekend… would that rule a daytime event out for most of you?
what do we think about midweek?????
if we hold it earlier, ladies would have their new handbags for easter… and that’s always better than a new hat:)
or.. do we stay with the last weekend and move it to saturday… (charlabob.. would saturday work better?)
i need some input on this as i need to go talk to the pub… i will probably go talk to them today to see if they want us anyway.
and if not them.. how about the other pub at spokane and delridge?
as for handbags.. handbags for hunger just had a ring to it:)
bags for bucks works too… but doesn’t highlight hunger.
House, i have no problem with shuffleboard.. but i would have thought pool more your style… you do have a wife tho.. and i bet she has handbags…
here’s a thought.. you could come together…. She has to be reeeeealy charming to be your wife ;-)
do we want to to get the most for the bags or just have great fun and a nominal charge? (JenV.. do you want to negotiate privately with Charlabob for your bag and then contribute proceeds to the food bank at the event? sounds like you have a somewhat captive customer there….)
Would we like to have prizes.. for the most unusual bag.. the most utilitarian bag… the most elegant bag… etc….
again.. that’s easy.. they would be “funky” prizes in keeping with the theme of the event.
Do we want to make it a dress up event.. of the st Paddy’s day sort or hats or….
do we want to charge a small cover for the event??? that way the guys contribute too.
we can put this together however we like it.. but once i write the press release.. we are done deciding.
so first.. a date…. and then let the ideas flow…
if i don’t have enough input to put this together this weekend… i will just decide to decide and do a press release on Monday.

SueParticipantIs it possible that I’m the only woman on earth who hates handbags/purses/pocketbooks (whatever) and shoes? I’ve got a small Victorinox backpack for commuting to work (because my work pants are pocketless and a bus chick needs to carry things), but otherwise I’m either stuffing everything in my pockets, or if I have to break down and carry something on my leisure time, it’s in a tie-dyed backpack.
add, I’m laughing at “pockabook” – I’m from NYC and spent 7 years in northern NJ before moving out here – we called them pockabooks too. :)

JoBParticipantSue.. no.. i don’t think you are alone..
i don’t like them much myself.. just can’t figure out how to get along without them and can never find “the” one that works perfectly…
this was actually a “clean my closet” idea but i don’t think the rest of what needs to go could do the same kind of public service:(
March 7, 2008 at 5:00 pm #616871
FranciParticipantCould do some sort of auction or silent auction where folks bid for the purses they like? I’m not sure what the space is like, but that way to really popular bags could garner a few more $$ for the food bank.
How about everyone bring a non-perishable food donation as well?
March 7, 2008 at 5:04 pm #616872
WSBKeymasterSue, that makes two of us.
My shoes=Drugstore flip-flops, Payless flats when absolutely unavoidably necessary to actually cover my feet for work purposes.
Just wanted to say that to make you feel less alone before I step away from this topic not just to get back to work but so as not to be a buzzkill :)

beachdrivegirlParticipantSoo.. I havent read all of the commits, but am getting the idea. One thing I did back in high school as a fundraiser was a community “yard sale.” Everyone brought stuff that they wanted to get rid of and priced it. All of the proceedds at that time were used for our track team and eveyrthing that was left was picked up by the Salvation Army as a donation. That way everyone was able to clean out there close and make sure everything went to a good cause. One thing we could do is something similar to that but rather than the proceeds going to a track team they can go to the food bank. Just an idea. Then afterwards we can head to the bar to celebrate with a beer.

JoBParticipantlowmanbeach and Sue…
my shoes are whatever i can actually walk in.. tho i have to confess i was absolutely thrilled to find a pair of almost ballet flats in black leather that i could wear and looked like real girl shoes when i looked down:)) to say i wear sensible shoes is an understatement:(
and i wear flip flops all summer.. just not the payless sort because i wouldn’t be walking in 10 minutes if i tried.
I used to be the queen of cheap shoes.
I don’t think this is so much about fashion as fun… so let’s find a way to incorporate that.
Franci…
I like the silent auction idea … we could start at a dollar and go up…
or.. we could simply sell tokens and let those be the auction dollars…. in a “lucky buck” fashion… the lucky person whose token was drawn would get the bag… and they could be 4 for a dollar or something equally ridiculous to make it more affordable and fun. i bet lots of people would want to take a chance on their dollar or quarter netting a great bag.
I did that a lot at charitable functions when i was in the midwest and we always raised far more than in the silent auction process…
besides.. it nets a really “rowdy” and fun ending to the event… everyone walks out laughing and talking.
and if people like.. leftover handbags could go on to the garage sale in May to be sold for charity… food bank or ….
i plan to participate in the garage sale.

charlabobParticipantRapid Random Responses, so watch out:
I apparently like buying bags but don’t much like changing them. :-)
JoB, I wasn’t suggesting we reschedule just to accommodate me — that was my rsvp — and I was just proposing to buy Jen’s bag if we didn’t have the event. (My DIL who loves the bags is a Jen too — is there a pattern here?)
Has someone taken over the community yard sale from (the group that shut down)? If not, maybe we should? (I seem to recall WSB volunteering.)
See you when we do; we’ll probably show up at anything that fits in our schedule(s), bags or no bags.

andreaParticipantI’m in for handbags for hunger! I will confess to be a purse-aholic, so I will have a good number that I can contribute. And I say purse, you say potato. Handbag just sounds kinda old fashioned to me (sorry!). As for when/where/how, I am more inclined to say the last weekend of this month works best for me, but I will make an effort to make it whenever the date. I also like the idea of the silent auction. Thanks JoB and Jan for the execellent idea ;)
March 7, 2008 at 6:13 pm #616877
JenVMemberOk! Charlabob, the Beijo is on hold for your DIL. I think Jens just have great taste! I like the idea of holding a silent – or loud – auction for the bags in order to raise more $$ for the food bank. The bags that don’t go at auction could be donated to a local women’s shelter- I know they are always in need of “interview clothes” and handbags would probably be appreciated.
I am fine with the upcoming weekend. I tend to spend time on the weekends at the BPP, and know when they are not swamped with people- Saturday and Sunday afternoons are best. Especially if Lorraine is working! I know the owners would support this get together. And for the men- show up, drink, socialize and donate! We don’t whine when you don’t invite us to your *insert male dominated event here*, and you shouldn’t whine about our handbag social. I keed, I keed. I for one would love to see everyone there! Besides just getting to meet your fellow WSBers it is a good cause. Aren’t there any men out there with “murses” (man purses) to donate? :)
JoB- GREAT idea and let me know if there is anything I can do to help facilitate this!
March 7, 2008 at 6:19 pm #616878
SueParticipantJoB – I understand totally about the shoes you can walk in. My shoe of choice is black new balance walking shoes. That’s pretty much all I have because they accommodate my orthotics nicely. :) I’ve always been one for comfort rather than looks – I mean, you’re talking to the woman who wore sneakers under her wedding dress. :)
I’ll still come to the event, even if I’m not buying any purses – I can still donate some money and have some fun!
March 7, 2008 at 6:46 pm #616879
JoBParticipantJenV and Andrea.. i appreciate the input and i will be definately looking for help for the event.
if you can think of a less “stuffy” or “old” hook for a title.. i am soooo willing to go for it.
i confess.. i like alliteration… but i don’t get most “young” or “cool” talk. Hubby does.
All of the cool jokes pass over my head without even making a breeze.
I don’t think it has to do with age tho.. i was this way when i was young too:( You can get by with a lot when you are young:) When you are older.. people just think you are old.
I am headed down to try to talk with the owners now…the BPP??? i think i got that one;-)
i will give you their input as soon as i get back.

FranciParticipantI read something in a post above about donating items to charity for women interviewing. I just have to put a plug in for the YMCA’s Dress for Success program. They collect quality interview appropriate clothing to assist women they are assisting in reentering the workforce.
The women in their program get a complete interview outfit for their interviews, then if they get called back for a second interview – they get another outfit. Its a great program.
March 7, 2008 at 6:56 pm #616881
beachdrivegirlParticipantI will have to look into the dres for success program. I have lots of clothes that our work cothes that I unfornatley dont quite look right anymore on me.
~~And on a second note for a plug for nonprofit~~
http://www.plymouthhousing.org/volunteer/index.html
This is the link for Plymouth Housing. They work with the homeless and getting them into housing and keeping them clean(sober). They always have a need for more items for their welcome baskets. One way my family has started helping is that everytime we stay at a hotel we bring back the small bottle of shampoo and conditionaire and bring it there. It might sound small but htey need it. Just a little food for thought.

katydidMemberHow about Old Bags for Hunger…ha, hya, ha…I’m not serious. It just struck me as funny. Am I weird or not? Anyway, I love this idea..don’t think I have any bags ‘cept the ones under my eyes, but I’ll be there. JoB, give me a call if you want some help. I like the idea of buying tokens. That way those of us without bags can bid too. Or do I have this all confused…I mean I guess you could bid even if you didn’t bring a bag, right?

JoBParticipantI just spoke with the owner at the beveridge Place Pub. He is excited about the idea of an event and we have settled on Sunday, March 16, 2:30 to 4:00 PM…
we will iron out details by email since he had a meeting (looked like “heavy” stuff from the attitudes of the guys i passed on the way out).
But, i think anyone interested in helping put this event together.. or just anyone wanting to get together… should meet this saturday TOMORROW at 2 PM to see if we can get things going.
We can have another meet later in the week, but i am i think i am a grandmother on sunday and nothing disrupts that… and i am generally so tired after that i can’t move.. let alone be sociable.
i will post this planning meeting in a separate thread…
March 7, 2008 at 7:28 pm #616884
JenVMemberJoB- I can be there at 2pm tomorrow. Let me know- either here or email me at vanmatrejennifer@gmail.com
March 7, 2008 at 7:33 pm #616885
JoBParticipantJenV.. i started a sepaprate thread for the planning meeting.. but i will be there…
I am really looking forward to meeting you.
March 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm #616886
charlabobParticipantSign at least one of the dynamic charlabobs to help with putting together. One of us is a great worker and one of us likes to tell people what to do. I’ll let you guess which is which.
Should we set up a private email of helperbees list to discuss details? I don’t know anything about blog-tiquette, so I don’t know if meta discussions here are OK.
I googled “charity auction checklist” and came up with this. It’s vast overkill for what we’re doing, but it might include something silly that we’d forget otherwise. I did it because I’m still and always amazed at how smart google makes me look. Not smart enough for them to want to hire met — yet. But we’re working on it.

Hmmmm a serious meeting of guys in a bar — can we expect mysterious bodies wearing cement overshoes to show up in the Duwamish next week? Or have I spent too much time with Sopranos reruns???
March 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm #616887
JenVMemberme too! :)
March 7, 2008 at 7:38 pm #616888
JeraldParticipantPurse. Never heard the word “handbag” in Seattle until Sex & the City changed things.
March 7, 2008 at 8:01 pm #616889
charlabobParticipantLet me second Franci’s post about organizations that put together interview outfits for low income women, and add that they particularly need clothes for “women of size.” (Isn’t that the best euphemism ever?) Size, sadly, is a number bigger than 12.
March 7, 2008 at 9:33 pm #616890
JoBParticipantlooks like a second fun event we could put together would be a dress for success collection:) i have plenty of “size”.
March 10, 2008 at 3:53 am #616891
TheVelvetBulldogMemberJoB – thanks for this great idea. What is the separate thread you started? I happen to be on the fundraising/public relations committee for the West Seattle Food Bank – have you told them about this idea? We’d certainly be happy to help publicize it. I’ve got a bag or two I could definitely donate to the cause! And I’d suggest a silent auction with at least a minimum price rather than a flat price. If someone’s willing to give more money to the food bank, why stop them? :-)
.
I also happen to be on a YWCA committee (yes, I have the magnet that reads “Stop me before I volunteer again” but I’m usually too busy to read it.) Dress for Success is a fantastic program that will happily take your lovely work clothes. They also do a fabulous rummage sale in the (late summer, early fall) where really top of the line clothes are sold for a pittance. If you have any tres chic work clothes/evening clothes, that would be the place to put them.
.
JoB, how can we get our bags to you?
March 10, 2008 at 4:18 am #616892
JoBParticipantTheVelvetBulldog…
i have not talked to anyone from either program yet and ws looking for someone from both programs to come to the event.. could that be you?
you can contact me at joanne@brayden.org….
