JoBParticipantAs i picked up my new handbag to go out the door to have lunch with JanS to celebrate her b-day.. i had an idea.
JanS thinks it might float so before i go work to make it happen i thought i would toss it out for reaction.
Handbags for hunger…
many of us have handbags that looked so promising in the store and turned out not to work so well in our real lives. Some of them are really nice.. but now neglected handbags…
i thought we might get together at some public place.. have a few drinks/snacks and bring handbags which could be sold at a flat $5 each or in silent auction for a $5 minimum… and donate the proceeds to the local food bank before the end of the month so the dollars would double.
anybody besides us think some variation on this this might be fun?

AnonymousInactiveHandbags scare me :) Do messenger/laptop bags count?
March 6, 2008 at 11:07 pm #616845
JenVMemberooooh yeah, JoB! I have a personal credo- so that I don’t end up one of “those ladies” with umpteen dozen handbags – every time I buy a new handbag I have to either give one away or sell one. So, I bought a new Beijo last week…and I have a Beijo to get rid of – and this seems like a fun way to do it! For those of you unfamiliar with Beijo (www.beijobags.com), they are simply the best bags for our weather and they are gorgeous to boot! (ooh, boots. now if I could only do something about my shoe collection…)

charlabobParticipantThis is brilliant! Sign me up — and get ready to go nuts. (Does everyone love orange and purple and surreal?) If I can’t make it, I’ll turn over my stash to JoB to sell. My only rule is once it leaves my house, it isn’t allowed to return. The same rule applies to ex-husbands and not-you-eithers.
We might want to advertise this on the WSB events page–depends on whether it’s a fund raiser or a fun raiser. (Now you see why I’m not allowed to organize anything…I can make a mountain out of the most charming molehill.)
JenV, I thought Beijjo was a dog. Do they bite?
March 6, 2008 at 11:43 pm #616847
JoBParticipanti think we could safely embrace any kind of bag.. and i agree that anything that goes out my door doesn’t come back.
so i take it this idea might have merit and i should see how to put it together?
I just wanted to test the waters before doing the work of organizing and asking for front page recognition:)
I won’t start until tomorrow.. so anyone who thinks this is a bad idea.. or that the timing stinks. please say so…
and yes.. i am well aware that men might not want to either donate or purchase bags… but some of you just don’t know what you are missing…
if we included messenger and other utility bags.. there might be something to entice the local fellas as well:)
that is other than all those women in one place ;-O
i could use any ideas on place or timing too.. so feel free to wade in with constructive ideas as well…

JenVMemberwell, charlabob- they are pretty fierce! :)
March 6, 2008 at 11:47 pm #616849
JenVMemberand JoB- I vote for hosting it at Beverage Place Pub -maybe on a Sunday afternoon when it is kinda quiet. They are so accomodating there. My only restriction is I am out of town Easter weekend. This sounds like a lot of fun!
March 7, 2008 at 3:33 am #616850
JoBParticipantTiming…
Because this is a month of holidays…
probably most people will celebrate st paddy’s day next weekend..
palm sunday the following..
and easter the following..
we have one weekend left.. the final weekend in march.
something tells me there is something planned then too.. but i can’t remember what, so will keep checking.
March 7, 2008 at 4:43 am #616851
JoBParticipantok.. i think i did a fairly through check and the last weekend in March is open…
sunday afternoon (the 30th ) was suggested. Does this time work for people?
March 7, 2008 at 5:32 am #616852
JanSParticipantworks for me :) count me in…
March 7, 2008 at 6:00 am #616853
charlabobParticipantThat’s MIL’s 96th birthday so I suspect the charlabobs will be occupied, depending on the time. I’ll make sure our bags are represented.
March 7, 2008 at 6:21 am #616854
JanSParticipantwow…96..can’t miss that one..it’s a milestone…
JoB…would a Saturday work? as in the 29th? or did we cover that?
March 7, 2008 at 6:34 am #616855
charlabobParticipantActually, I think it’s 97 — but she’s decided to chop 10 years off so she’s claiming to be 86 now. Feisty….we like it!
March 7, 2008 at 6:35 am #616856
TheHouseMemberHmmm, why not throw in some shuffleboard with the handbag social? Maybe we can even compare what pills we take?
How about something for us “younger” and “male” folk? Like drinking at a bar?
March 7, 2008 at 6:58 am #616857
AnonymousInactiveTheHouse – I’m not so young and am female but I’d drink with you any day over a handbag social.
March 7, 2008 at 7:09 am #616858
WSBKeymasterI’m glad you guys are organizing this amongst yourselves and having fun with it ’cause we’d be no help. My idea of the perfect purse, the $15 Target black backpack purse, replaced once a year. (Side note, is “purse” vs. “handbag” a regionalism like “soda” vs. “pop”?)
March 7, 2008 at 7:10 am #616859
JanSParticipantDrinking at a bar is just fine with me…but what would you suggest as a fundraiser for the foodbanks while we’re drinking? Oh, this is directed at The House :) After all, making money is what this is about, not just socializing…:)
March 7, 2008 at 7:15 am #616860
charlabobParticipantum, isn’t the beverage place pub a bar? i thought we were quite clear on that part — combining drinking with fundraising results in many funds and the taking home of various strange and forgotten purchased items. been there.
March 7, 2008 at 7:33 am #616861
AnonymousInactivecharlabob, sarcastic much? I think there are just some of us that might want to join in the project but have no use or desire to see and talk about handbags. And I wasn’t aware the pub was anything but a suggestion at this point…..and, you said you weren’t going anyway.
March 7, 2008 at 10:41 am #616862
JanSParticipantCharla…seems that The House is dissing us…talking about shuffleboard, and comparing the pills we take, like we’re a bunch of old decrepit beings(walking a fine line here, since I am a bit decrepit at the moment – lol). I think he thinks the purse/handbag idea is boring, that perhaps it doesn’t encompass both sexes…so I was asking him what he might suggest as a fundraiser if he doesn’t like this idea.
March 7, 2008 at 2:00 pm #616863
charlabobParticipantI’m sorry kids — I was (a) joking and (2) tired (as evidenced by the all lowercase.) I’ll toddle back to my corner and gum some crackers. :-)
(JenV, if the bag party falls through, I’d be happy to buy your Beijo. My DIL collects them and I can get coveted MIL points for paying attention.)
March 7, 2008 at 2:49 pm #616864
GenHillOneParticipantSPS spring break begins that weekend, but if we’re talking about an audience of pill-popping cracker gummers, probably not a conflict ;)
It’s a great idea!
March 7, 2008 at 3:14 pm #616865
addParticipantRE: regionalism of purse/handbag – I’m from NJ and we always say “pocketbook” (or more accurately “pockabook”).
March 7, 2008 at 3:16 pm #616866
KayleighMemberI think it sounds fun. Although I refuse to pay more than $50 for a handbag (it’s a *handbag* ferchrissake). So my old ones are not likely to bring in big bucks for charity.
Not a fan of bars but Beveridge Place doesn’t look too bad.
March 7, 2008 at 3:41 pm #616867
WSMomParticipantIt’s okay to show up without a handbag, right! This sounds like fun! I’ll be there!
