JoBParticipantCaptain Dave..
i just love it when some moronic Republican politician pulls out the old drugs and liberals card.. and then gets busted for possession and spends time in rehab… nothing like Karma to make your day ;-)and yes.. i do think the drugs they were taking impaired their reasoning.

captainDaveParticipantJanS: “Dave…are you contending they do? As a blanket statement, I mean, covering all drugs? Are you just talking about illegal ones?”
Yes. I contend that recreational drug use makes people stupid and that liberals are more likely to partake in the joys of drug use than conservatives. I also contend that people with impaired cognitive ability tend to vote liberal. Prove me wrong.

This statement is all the proof you should need, CD.

JanSParticipantohferfuxache, Dave…will you stop generalizing…read Mike’s link….refute those facts, if you can. But stop with the stupid statements – YES, STUPID STATEMENTS….go celebrate whatever it is you celebrate this time of year. And whatever is affecting your brain, you may want to go check that out. Soooooooo effing tired of your nonsensical posts. Sooooo glad all Repubs are not like you.
December 22, 2016 at 12:34 pm #868960
captainDaveParticipantJanS: Political trends are nothing but generalizations. There are a lot of very intelligent individuals (including yourself) who vote liberal for all kinds of personal reasons. That has nothing to do with my claim that recreational drug use causes intellectual degradation and that liberals are more likely than conservatives to take drugs. Mike’s link showing crime convictions of US politicians over the centuries does nothing to refute my claim.

redblackParticipantdave, there are zillions of meth heads in appalachia who agree with you.
but really, i just showed up to declare this thread is officially over, and you are officially the loser.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin’s_law
it happened the moment that you compared liberals to nazis. weirdly, you implied (admitted?!) that the u.s. (in the form of trump?!) and russia teamed up to defeat progressive democrats in 2016 – like they did in 1944.
wtf ever.

New study out. The state with the highest oxycontin use.. 400+ per year for every man woman and child in the state.. West Virginia

captainDaveParticipantredblack: Those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat the same horrors. Why do you think Godwins law is so prevalent in discussions relating to leftist politics? Progressive Liberalism is simply an extension of tyrannical Marxian beliefs–just a different branch of the same rotten tree. I am not saying Russia conspired against the lefties, but I would not close the door on the idea since the motivation today is no different than it was seventy-five years ago. You need to learn your Russian history. They are not big on the euro-globalist ambitions you Democrats admire so much–just to the degree that it weakens the West.
You don’t win an argument by pulling the PC card. That’s just a loser’s tactic. However, I am glad you understood my assertion that leftist politics is fascism because that’s exactly what it is. It was economic fascism more than Hillary that was rejected on Nov 8th.

redblackParticipantPC is just another way to say “polite.”
and some intellectual honesty from dave and others in his camp (or compound, or bunker) would be refreshing.
16 intelligence agencies and 3 private security firms believe that russia hacked the vote in trump’s favor. the senate wants another investigation. trump has russian “business” ties, and i’m the unamerican socialist?
i could tell them all day long that i don’t want government to control the means of production and distribution and they’ll still tie themselves in knots trying to turn my motives into some bolshevik plot.
trump said he wants to unite us. evidently his sycophants aren’t on board.

looks like you ignored the data on prescription drug abuse
in favor of labelling those in states who voted to legalize marijuana potheads…there seems to be a trend here

TanDLParticipantSpeaking of PC, I have a question for CD and other Conservative types out there. Why all the upset and nastiness about politically correct speech? What is it exactly that you want to say, that you don’t think you would be allowed to say? I’ve had this discussion with a relative of mine and can’t seem to get a clear answer. Thanks.
December 23, 2016 at 9:45 am #869022
J242ParticipantDave: “Yes. I contend that recreational drug use makes people stupid and that liberals are more likely to partake in the joys of drug use than conservatives. I also contend that people with impaired cognitive ability tend to vote liberal. Prove me wrong.”
The burden of proof is on the person making the claim. Certainly this is obvious to any rational, intelligent person.
https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/burden-of-proof
See the way this works is I can claim that you possess no formal education and are in fact a troll who is making up everything just to stir the pot. Prove me wrong! lol I can’t prove that assertion so I’m not stating it just as you could not prove that assertion invalid because I could easily discount anything you tried to provide as evidence as being false. It simply doesn’t work. Don’t claim that which you cannot prove.
Now, if you said “extreme drug use can often lead to diminished intellectual capacity” I would agree. But saying “recreational drug use makes people stupid” is very hypocritical. Do you drink coffee? That’s recreational drug use, you are using a foreign substance (caffeine) to alter your perception and/or mental state. Does that make all habitual coffee drinkers stupid? No, of course not just as the occasional recreational MJ user’s choice to imbibe in no way makes them “stupid”.
Just ask Bill Gates!

redblackParticipantJ242: stir the pot. smoke the pot. whatever.
cheers, happy solstice, and merry christmas, all y’alls.
that includes you, cap’n.
December 23, 2016 at 1:26 pm #869038
captainDaveParticipantredblack: What you advocate for in so many of your posts is best described as “economic fascism” which is a confluence of socialism and large-scale capitalism (sans entrepreneurialism).–look it up. You will find that you and Mayor Murrey have a lot more in common with Adolf than you think.
JoB: What does the issue of whether it is legal or not have anything to do with diminished cognitive ability? The end result is the same. I don’t need a scientific study to confirm that prolonged marijuana use makes people stupid–I have witnessed too many such accounts over the years. It is a widely known fact that marijuana users are also more likely to use other drugs to mess up their minds.
J242: I previously posted an article that correlates high marijuana use with states that voted democrat. It seems to me you are intentionally trying to sidestep the issue by implying that I made claims about coffee drinkers. I think you know what I meant. Generally speaking, people who use drugs to get high are dummies. The words “extreme drug use” are subjective and irrelevant because the effect is in infinite degrees—there is no specific threshold for “stupidity” (other than maybe voting for a candidate who wants to outlaw voting). If you are an exception to the rule, then good for you. I never said ALL people who use drugs are stupid. And, no, I don’t drink coffee or alcohol.

J242ParticipantDave: “I previously posted an article that correlates high marijuana use with states that voted democrat. ”
I know and I am not disputing that. I am addressing what I do dispute. How is that confusing to you?
“It seems to me you are intentionally trying to sidestep the issue by implying that I made claims about coffee drinkers.”
Not at all, I’m detailing why your broad-brush statements are so painfully asinine. Caffeine is a drug. “a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.” That is the definition of drug. Don’t like it? Take it up with Merriam-Webster’s and learn to be more specific in your criticism of an issue.
” Generally speaking, people who use drugs to get high are dummies.”
So Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and in general, most of the top inventors of our time are/were all dummies to you? Please. You need to check your opinions at the door.
For a moment of levity, I’ll let Bill Hicks sum it up best:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiFgz9ndWKwNow, we get it, you’re opposed to “drugs” which I’m pretty sure you mean to be “marijuana” however that’s disingenuous at best, outright intentionally dismissive at worst. If you were referring to crack, heroin, etc you wouldn’t get any disagreement but those are serious, hard drugs. We have a heroin epidemic in the country now thanks to doctors over-prescribing opioids. Legal drugs causing an epidemic while THC is being used effectively to get people off of their opioid addictions.
” I never said ALL people who use drugs are stupid.”
Yes, you did. Maybe you’ve been taking some bad meds? Seems to be effecting your memory. lol
“Yes. I contend that recreational drug use makes people stupid and that liberals are more likely to partake in the joys of drug use than conservatives.”I’m sorry, did you MEAN to say “makes a lot of people stupid”? Because, you didn’t say that. You have repeatedly said black & white “recreational drugs = stupid people” and that’s absolutely wrong. Sure, a pothead who just smokes weed all day and watches TV isn’t going to jump to the top of anyone’s “best & brightest” list but that’s one extreme. Basing your heavily biased opinion solely on that one extreme ignores the other 95% of people who do imbibe.
I don’t imbibe in MJ and only occasionally have a drink. I also don’t have any prescription medicines so I’m certainly not a valid target for your assumptions.

J242ParticipantDave: “there is no specific threshold for “stupidity” (other than maybe voting for a candidate who wants to outlaw voting).”
As is painfully obvious on this thread by your incessant posts. As for a specific candidate wanting to “outlaw” voting? Put up or shut up. Your boy wants to prevent lawful citizens from voting, not the candidate the overwhelming majority (3 million and counting!) voted for.

You keep on sucking in that exhaust though. Sadly, it’s the rest of us who will have to pay for it but while you’re still taking up our air I’ll call you and your ilk out for what you are. redblackParticipantlike i’ve said, dave, you obviously can’t or don’t read what i post, and then you have the audacity to dictate to me what i believe.
you need enemy, and you have chosen us. i understand that it makes it easier to fit your ideological arguments with the internet narrative; but what you are being told about what i believe and what i actualy believe are quite different.
this isn’t communication.
here’s a perfect example: your “sans entrepeneur” comment. i believe in a strong and thriving local and regional merchant class. farmers, restauranteurs, makers of widgets, etc. i’ll take local orchards over del monte. i’ll take west seattle brewing over budweiser. i’ll use the local (licensed) plumber before roto-rooter. washington federal before bank of america.
large-scale capitalism? sure. as long as it’s well-regulated and taxed heavily enough to help pay for the infrastructure it uses.
can we stop with the red scare bullsh!t now? it was old hat 90 years ago.
December 24, 2016 at 9:22 am #869102
J242ParticipantI think you are asking for far too much redblack. Not of a fellow citizen by any means, but of a troll who is of the all too common mindset among his ilk of “Don’t bother me with the facts, I’ve already made up my mind” like the Cap’n.
I for one appreciate your sentiment just as I’m sure all of the local businesses both you & I favor over conglomerate options do. You really hit the nail on the head as to what makes West Seattle just so special. We can operate independently here in our amazing little corner of the world and are not just happy to but proud in doing so. The very foundations of this are rooted in working with and for our neighbors which goes against everything coming into the highest office and those who support “it” in January.
December 24, 2016 at 10:12 am #869107
SunuvaParticipantThat Salon.com article is sadly, correct. Conservatives have been programmed to hate liberals and that has become their ideology. They use the word liberal as if it is a derogatory slur – “you liberals”. On the left side, we try to listen, reach out, understand, empathize, but it is completely one-sided. Our outreach falls flat and we become bitter and despondent, we become like them. If things keep going like this we are doomed because a country divided truly cannot stand.
The really sad thing is that I don’t see any way this divisiveness and trained hatred will end. Why? Because there is money to be made at it. Lots of money. The likes of Anne Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and Tomi Lahren are raking it in selling pure unconcealed hatred of liberals. As long as people can get rich peddling hatred, it will continue to grow.
On rationalizing with the other side; I agree with some of the above comments that these types of conservatives have their minds completely made up and no amount of reasoning, no matter how truthful and source-checked, will change that. There is nothing we can say to open their minds. I’ve tried with family members and it is impossible. They have accepted their training completely and nothing a damn liberal could say would allow them to open up. Nothing.
Also, as redblack has mentioned above, these conservative types seem to like to dictate to us what we believe. I read some of CDs comments explaining what liberals believe and I think to myself, “I don’t believe any of these things that CD says I do.”. Either I’m a terrible liberal, or he is getting his “facts” about what liberals believe from some alternate dimension. It’s pretty much impossible to have a reasonable discussion when the “facts” are complete nonsense. Where do you even start?

I am not sure how you define hatred. I have a lot of liberal friends. I don’t have anyone on a hate list. As you can see, J242 seems to be offended that people like me (assumably those “ilk” who voted for Trump) have the audacity to breath air that belongs to his/her group of people. This seems to exemplify the meaning of contempt and hatred more than anything I see in this forum.
The hypocrisy here is over the top. You and other have a complete narrative on how I and other conservatives think, yet you play victim to the same such false conjecture. It’s not possible to have logical discussion outside of the approved realm of narrow minded thinking here.
I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
