Just a couple of things I have wondered about: What is the distance around the pond? What is the schedule for the waterfall (not running now, why?)

The path is EXACTLY .25 miles. I’ve measured it on a GPS with good accuracy. So four laps per mile. Really nice!

I don’t know why they turned off the waterfall. If you’re really curious you can ask one of the landscape people or send an email to the property manager.

Thanks for the info, I figured someone had measured the distance. It looks close to the size of a track, but wanted to know for sure. Much nicer view than the track!

I just may contact them, I miss (especially my little boy) the waterfall running.

Love walkin’ the dogs around the pond, the kidlet rides her scooter, and we all get some exercise!

I love the Highpoint Pond, too.

One thing we can all do is try to encourage the children to not litter. When I see a child drop candy wrappers, I encourage him/her to put it in the garbage can. Or I just pick up the trash myself – hoping the child will follow my lead.

Anyone seen the ospreys hanging out around the pond the past couple weeks? I saw one dive into the pond and come out with a fish. It was amazing.

Haven’t seen the osprey recently, but I have seen an eagle circling quite a bit in the area.

I totally agree about the littering, I will say something if I see it happen (which is often) and we try to pick up litter so that it doesn’t end up in the pond.

I also say something when I see kids throwing rocks at the ducks, which is way too often as well!

Good for you KDub! My guess is litter prevention is not a priority in Somalia (where many of the HP residents come from.) So it really helps out to have folks like you helping out.

Keep yours eyes open for the osprey. They are around.

The osprey was at the pond last year as well. I got several pictures of it. I was so happy to see it return. I have seen it catch small birds, but am surprised it caught fish. I didn’t know there were fish in the pond, other than the one gold fish I have seen.

Gold fish even those released from an aquarium will grow into middlin’ sized carp, and they won’t stay gold…I caught them on very small hooks as a kid and watched them turn from dirty brass to gold in clean water.

Our house faces this fantastic pond. There are 2 osprey (at least) that visit the pond each day. Add to that blue herons, wood ducks, buffleheads, Northern widgeons, mallards, barn swallows, and the occasional kingfisher and bald eagle. Within weeks after moving to our home I purchased a pair of high quality binoculars and a birding book (something I never would have thought I would ever do). The diversity of wildlife is wonderful to see!

One question I haven’t been able to find out about is this:

    What happened to the frogs?

When we first moved to this house (summer of 2009), I loved being lulled to sleep to the sound of the frogs singing in the evening. I’ve never heard them since that summer. Anyone know what might have happened?

I talked the maintenance team yesterday. The pump for the waterfall is broken. A new one is on the way and should be in operation within a week.

I don’t know what happened to the frogs. Maybe the kids scared them away? I do recall hearing a lot of frogs in years past.

Thanks for posting the info skeeter. My little guy will be the most excited for sure.

I did see the Osprey circling the other day. Such a beautiful sight!

how flat is the path? I am always looking for places for my daughter to skate during the good weather, but too much of a grade makes that pretty challenging. How appropriate would this location be for a flat-ish stroll/skate?

Once you are at the pond, it is nice and flat. It would be great for a stroll/skate.
