mhogfossMemberI really want some great tamales? Anyone know where I can get some?

seattlesueMemberI heard there was a great place in WC. Not sure the name of it though.

alkivikingParticipantPuerto Vallarta on California is great, can’t remember if they have tamales though.
June 5, 2008 at 3:26 am #626557
austinMemberThe best tamales I’ve had around have been from taco trucks, hands down. I normally frequent Taqueria los Potrillos and Tacos El Asadero on Rainier (not WS, for shame), but this thread discusses a more local option.
http://www.lostacotrucks.com maintains a not-entirely complete listing of area trucks with reviews and links to associated health reports.

mhogfossMemberAwesome, sounds great! Thanks Austin!

DavidFParticipantTry the Salvadorean Bakery, on Roxbury and Delridge(ish).
June 5, 2008 at 4:17 am #626560
alkivikingParticipantI second that. It is off of Roxbury almost to Delridge (on the right side right before the auto parts store. Awesome food and desserts for days!!

Bikefor1MemberOne time, I went to the old Kmart on Delridge. There was a Latina standing out front with a cooler. Except the cooler was actually for keeping her tamales warm. She was selling them for $1 a piece. I took a chance. They tasted great. :-)

AnonymousInactiveBikefor1 – I swear those are the BEST tamales.
When we lived in Phoenix, there were always people walking around with those portable “coolers” selling tamales around around Christmas time (tamales are big at Christmas time in Phoenix). They are always about $1 or $10 for a dozen.
Those are the best tamales I’ve EVER had!!!!

squareeyesParticipantOff-topic – but still Mexican food related. Where’s the good mole’? Everything I’ve tried in Seattle ranges from super sweet to a touch sweet. La Carta de Oaxaca in Ballard – which gets raves – rates a touch sweet to me so it’s the best of the bunch IMO but sweet is sweet and good mole’ isn’t sweet. The best I had was given to me from friends who went down to Oaxaca and brought me some in plastic wrap. Add chicken stock and fresh tomatoes and simmer. Mmmm.
Do any of the taco trucks have mole’?
June 5, 2008 at 7:52 pm #626564
beachdrivegirlParticipantTaco trucks always have the best tamales hands down. If you want a sit down meal I have been quite impressed with the Cactus on Alki’s tamales. But nothing is going to beat the home made tamales from the taco trucks and “coolers”…you see them everywhere in Yakima

inactiveMemberHas anybody been to Muy Macho in South Park?
I’ve never had their tamales, but I very much enjoyed their mole.
Also, anything they charbroil that I have had has been excellent.

inactiveMemberHey I’m not a huge tamale/pupusa fan (that’s what they serve at the Salvadorean Bakery) but, about those tamales in coolers somebody mentioned…
I had never seen them, until this afternoon when I was going through South Park, right by the Muy Macho parking lot.
Every Saturday (I asked) a couple are selling those tamales out of the trunk of their car in the MM parking lot – and I think it was $7/6. They translated their menulet for me: chicken, pork, jalapeno w/cheese, and pineapple tamales. They said you can even freeze them for two or three weeks.
So. There you have the daily food report from the parking lot in South Park.

I would have to completely disagree with that statement, sorry!

IrukandjiParticipantThe Mexican Grocery down at Pike Place Market sells great tamales. Take ’em home, re-wrap them in banana leaf. Best I’ve found outside Cafe de Olla in Puerto Vallarta.
Now I’m hungry…

Bikefor1MemberOMG WSDood, I completely forgot about Pineapple tamales!! I had one for the first time down in Mazatlan, it was great. :-)

alkinetParticipantTry the West 5. Yep West 5. Great Tamales. Lard free. And made by Mexican cooks, if it makes you feel more authentic. The guys really make some great ones.

SuitsarenotBoringMembermmmmmm – Tamales, my favorite! Mission actually has pretty tasty daily tamales.

CMParticipantHaven’t been in a while, but it’s a fun little trip to take the water taxi and go to El Puerco Lloron (The Crying Pig), halfway up the Pike Market Hillclimb.
June 11, 2008 at 9:15 pm #626575
inactiveMemberHey CM –
I’m a El Puerco Lloron fan too! That’s a very nice little outing indeed! With a little trip through the Aquarium perhaps? What a nice day that would be!
The Dow’s Water Taxi people have redistributed the free ride coupon postcards for the taxi around various Junction businesses. I picked up a couple today at lunch. The expiration date is June 30th I think.
I’m gonna’ stop at Puerco Lloron this time! That’s the first place I ever had taquitos when they first opened. A lifetime ago!
Always keepin’ an eye for the good freebies :).
June 11, 2008 at 10:01 pm #626576
CMParticipantWSDood, if I make a stop at the aquarium, it turns into an all day affair, ’cause I get mesmerized by the otters.
There’s a gelato place right next to PL, too!
