I just came from a walk to Lincoln Park and along the beach trail to Colman Pool. Tonight I see that the plywood boards that cover the plexiglass wall around the pool have been covered in large bursts of graffiti—mostly black and silver. Some are signatures and name phrases painted by these mean-spirited hooligans and other inane marks. At least 25 boards had been painted mainly on the west side facing the water, but also a bit on the south. Then the little side building on the south side had its west wall painted as well—over the brick! I could see that they had graffitied the brick wall by the women’s rest room, but someone had attempted to wash that off.

Has anyone reported this? I haven’t been there in at least two weeks so I do not know when it happened. But this sort of thing needs to be reported immediately and cleaned up or it just encourages these jerks and others like them to paint more. There must be hundreds of people passing this location each week. Surely it happened fairly recently. I hope folks aren’t just ignoring or normalizing this behavior. Anyone have more information on when and how it happened—all at once or over time? Thanks.

I highly recommend that you report this graffiti vandalism to the city; don’t assume someone else has already done so. I have had very good results reporting tags on traffic signs in my neighborhood via the online reporting system. The tags are usually removed within one to two weeks. Unfortunately, graffiti/tagging seems to be an increasingly prevalent problem.

Thanks, PatB. You know what? I went to that site and was filling it out until I got to this part: “We respect your privacy and will not distribute your personal information except as necessary to resolve your request or complaint. However, please be aware that this information is subject to the State’s public disclosure laws and may be disclosable upon request.” Nope, not doing that.

At this point I will probably call it in. But first I am waiting to hear from others about what they might know. Did this happen overnight or did it take several days? With all the walkers and runners going by, someone is bound to have more knowledge that would be useful. Maybe there was a witness. Thanks.

Witness? Not likely as graffiti/tagging vandals generally work at night.

Colman Pool has a resident operator so I would be shocked if it isn’t already on the city’s radar. I’ll ask the Parks media liaisons tomorrow to find out what the plan is for painting it over. Really sorry to hear this; have walked past the offseason plywood a million times over the years and have not ever seen it vandalized. – TR

Thanks so much for responding WSB. I tried to remember if I had ever seen graffiti there and could not recall any in that location. I have seen it at park shelters, signs and on trees but not there. There is so much of it and they painted the brick as well. I did call Parks and only got a voice mail recorder. But maybe you will find out more. I am curious as to how long it’s been up there. Surely it’s recent.

Well, I have waited patiently for two days and no call back from Carol Baker’s office. If you happen to see this entry WSB, would you consider making a short article about this and include photos. I don’t think many folks see this forum entry. That pool is passed by hundreds of people each week. Maybe more attention will get more results. The longer the graffiti stays up, the more the taggers win and are encouraged to vandalize more places. Thanks.
