GinaParticipantAny recommendations, or experiences with garden coaches? Are you a garden coach? What should I watch out for, and what should I not expect a garden coach to help with?
I like the idea of someone working with me that knows where to get amendments, what plants not to buy, and understands that the old roots are not easy to dig out, and doesn’t just hand off a graph chart with Latin plant names on it. Hey, someone that would actually accompany me to the nursery!

aaParticipantNo need to hire someone, any good nursery has friendly capable staff that will walk around with you. Personally I’m a fan of City Peoples Garden Center in Madison Valley, Sky Nursery in Shoreline, and Swansons in Ballard. Not a fan of WS Nursery (just my opinion folks). And don’t avoid Sky Nursery because of the distance, its amazing with tons of helpful staff.
You can also take some great beginning gardening classes through Seattle Tilth and the Master Gardener program.
Trial and error is part of gardening, embrace it!

anonymeParticipantGarden coaching and garden design may overlap a bit, but are not the same thing. Design would involve a graph with plant names – which is way, way more work than you might think. Hiring a designer will run you either around $75 per hour or a fixed estimate, and would include consultation and time for researching and completing the drawing.
Hiring a coach is a good way to get site specific advice that is just not possible while talking to a busy nursery salesperson. A coach can not only make planting recommendations, but also give advice on maintenance, health, and rehab issues in the garden.
Gina, if you can provide contact info, I may have an inexpensive solution for you.
