It’s been a while since I’ve been on the forums but this discussion is on my neighborhood so I feel like I should jump in, despite the risk of a virtual black eye.

First of all, I think that ToddinWestwood, WestSeattleDood and Celeste17 all have the right idea. It takes positive people and attitude to make a POSITIVE change in any neighborhood. Those of us who live in White Center recognize that we have problems to deal with but we also have a rich, diverse community that we appreciate as well.

So we work to make our place in the city a little better for all that live here. If you want to support positive change- donate to the food bank or support local businesses like Full Tilt, Cafe Rozella and the many others mentioned here.

Hopey, it seems to me you want to say anything you want and take no heat from it. If you can’t take heat, then stick to the “where can I get my yardwork done” type of threads. “Open and honest” doesn’t mean letting insulting things stand unquestioned.

I did talk about my personal experiences. Perhaps you didn’t read closely. And you expressed in your thread with disrespect toward a city. You can denigrate my “boosterism” till the cows come home: you haven’t made a case for your opinion.

I have no idea if your friends are racist or not, or provincial or not. I haven’t met them. But I do know that if someone wouldn’t come visit me based on where I live or if they said racist things with any regularity, I wouldn’t call them a friend.

positive things can and will happen in WC…I think about other areas of this fair city, and how they’ve gone from not so desirable to a place that’s vibrant and thriving…Columbia City comes to mind…

White Center could do this too…and I have a feeling it will…

Since this post started as “Full Tilt Ice Cream” I thought it might be appropriate to mention that I stopped by on Friday afternoon and had some of their scrumptious swiss orange chocolate and pralines ‘n cream ice cream in a home made waffle cone. It was hands down some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. Ann and Justin deserve kudos for bringing such a great product to Seattle!

Ooooh…a threadjack, back to being on the subject! Is that allowed? :-)

My only question is why do I have to wait ’til tomorrow (and is there a park, halfway between FT and Zippy’s, where I can buy one of each and just go sit and graze???)

I would like to clarify a couple points real quick.. first I wish this thread hadn’t gotten so ugly. My first response was to the point that people were making about the adult store on 16th. Point being, there is alot of other business’ in W.C. that create WAY more problems than an adult book/video store. It seems to me, anyone going to that place wants in, then heads out asap.

The second was not to sound racist. There is a dance club, it caters to the Mexican community, people come from all over to go there, they do not live in W.C. so they trash the place. It wasnt to sound racist. I was just stating fact. Anyone that lives down here can attest to what happens on a weekend and some have. I have walked many times from the old Pacific Rim Brewery back home and seen public drunkeness, breaking of bottles, trash and public urination out in the open. My garage gets its share of pee.

I live on the corner of 21 ave S.W. and Roxbury (house with the flowers on the garage door), I can see the “Welcome to W.C.” sign out my front window. I wish Full Tilt all the luck in the world. I will be there eating ice cream and teaching my daughter how to play pinball.

I also welcome any new business that will try to make W.C. a better place. But if you open any more pawn shops, mini-marts selling high alcohol wine/beer, or seedy bars, we got our eye on you.

ToddinWestwood wins the prize for speaking the truth at post 83.

It’s not about race, it’s not about elitism or provincialism. It’s about the tools and fools that don’t give a damn about the Center. Some of them live there, many of them don’t.

Based on where Todd lives (and I know the house) he has a much better handle on what life is like there than 90% of the folks arguing in this thread.

I live even closer to “downtown” WC than Todd and I totally agree. People who don’t care about the neighborhood are a large part of the problem. A LOUD part of the problem too- I hear them after the bars close waiting at the bus stop for the last bus to… somewhere. We’re making a conscious effort to, when possible, spend our time and money in WC to support the positive local businesses rather than driving all the way to the Junction. So horray for people like Ann and Justin who seem to care about making WC a better place. Pinball seems like a great start to me!

I read the other racism thread before this, so have a few more thoughts.

Re: the northend folks who didn’t know where to find a Mexican grocery.

I think many people’s personal lives are so intense and complicated that they simply don’t have time or energy to look outside their immediate situation. Sometimes it just takes all you have to get through each day.

For some, their world is extremely limited, maybe just within their Laurelhurst neighborhood and downtown office tower, with an occasional night at the symphony. Others have equally small lives composed of working three jobs and getting the laundry done and the children to daycare.

I had teenage friends who weren’t allowed to go to the Pike Place Mkt because it was “dirty” and they’d probably get hepatitis.

I know suburban people who NEVER drive anywhere near downtown Seattle because of the traffic and confusing one-way streets. Others might drive into town to a parking garage for a store and never set foot on the sidewalk because of the crime.

I always felt more brave and urban, more cosmopolitan and somehow superior as a young adult, because my world was bigger than that and I (almost) fearlessly encompassed most of the city and area as my world.

Then I went to Europe, the traditional hostel/backpack trip. I talked to other young people from all over and found out I was just a small-town hick. Not just small-town, but insular, self-centered-nation hick. I couldn’t discuss politics with an Italian boy, couldn’t even answer his challenge to name their current president. Fellow-travelers from all over the world were amazed that I’d never been to New York City — most of them had.

And, thinking of that, most of those global travelers really were only Western World travelers.

I guess my point (if I do have one) is that it’s all relative, and that staying within one’s comfort zone does not necessarily infer racism.

I bet those southend Mexican store owners generally don’t hang out at Volunteer Park or Carkeek Park or shop at Uwajimaya either.

Okay… I’ve read through all three pages of this thread and I still can’t find how the statement can be made from any of these comments that Seattle is, absolutely, the most racist city EVER.

Also, I saw a comment about brown skin from the owners of Full Tilt but nothing else. How did THAT get elaborated on?

Having just come through a series of threads where everything got blown out of proportion by people not reading all the posts in the thread then jumping to their own conclusions… the best advice I can give those folks who are going off on tangents is to go back and read the entire thread as a conversation.

I was sitting here getting ticked off by the general statement that Seattle was such a racist city but then I read the posts before and after and decided those statements seemed to be made out of context.

Just because I choose where I prefer to shop doesn’t make me a racist. And so what if YOU feel safe shopping someplace, maybe someone else doesn’t. Because of that you throw out the racist statements to them and, indeed, on our entire city? That kind of ticked me off. But, again, it seems like those statements were made out of context and as a misinterpretation of what was being discussed in this thread.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think so. Feel free to point out the error of my ways. Just don’t start calling me a racist because I don’t agree with you. Show me where someone was being racist in this thread.

    Thanks…

lol…yes…s’guyz…if ya can’t find the fingerpointin’ here…go there. I agree with you…things are what they are. I saw nothing in Full Tilt’s OP to be offensive. I’ve been here 33 years, have seen WC when it was truly “Rat City”, and have seen businesses there come and go, and things starting to improve…and…well..yes, as Jerald says, people may be “insulated” from other parts of the city, but…racist is a big stretch to make…and a serious stretch…

    #628096

Sort of. I paid the price for the ice cream. So tasty, but it didn’t like me at all. Now the doc has me on bland white flour stuff, no milk and no coffee. *gnashes teeth*

    Thanks for the thoughtful comments.

I think it rubbed me particularly wrong because I am tired of hearing people say things like, “I just moved here from Chicago/The East Coast/NY/Wherever I feel is more sophisticated and you guys are all a bunch of slackers/hicks/hippies/racists/etc.”

(and to those of you who’ve moved here recently and don’t do this…thank you) :-)

    #628099

*cocks head* I come from E. Los via Alaska, and I am not sophisticated at all. We’re all from somewhere, you know? Sorry you were made to feel that way.

And I still like the ice cream. And I like WC, probably because it is a work in progress.

Thanks, soc. I’m sure that the insults don’t apply to me…;-)

Part of it is that I remember Seattle before Microsoft, before Grunge, when you could buy a house for a song and the Sonics actually won games and there weren’t any crowds anywhere, etc. ad nauseum…

I am rooting for White Center. I really am.

Hubby and I added Full Tilt to our favorite places list…

we now have someplace we really want to go to for ice cream!

while we were there we chatted with the owners… short attention span today has stolen their names… and found them enthusiastic members of the club who believe change is something you make happen.. one connection at a time.

there was a interesting connection last night.. the owner had gone to Zippys for the first time.. and while there.. one of the owners told him they are planning to add milk shakes to their menu… and wanted to know where they got their ice cream..

long story short, it is very possible that zippys will be serving full tilt ice cream in their milkshakes… as will the brewery when it reopens.. in their lager floats…

It is possible for one person.. one business to connect with other like minded persons and businesses and with those connections provoke change…

if you want to change white center.. shop there. i visited one of the groceries this week and i am giong to have to become a much better cook to truly appreciate all they offer…. eat there… i can’t wait to try the pho shops. play there. add your face to the multitude…

and if you choose not to go after dark on weekends. .. that’s ok too…

this is one neighborhood i am going to get to know a lot better…

and yes.. the ice cream is very very good.
