BetParticipantWe have had fireworks going off for about a week now. Last night, July 3,2017, a huge one went off around 2:30AM near 38th Ave SW and Hinds. This is also the proximity of the fireworks location on preceding nights. According to the King County website, “Fireworks may be discharged only on July 4 from 9 a.m. to midnight.” Does anyone living around this neighborhood know who is setting them off?

WSBKeymasterHi. Fireworks actually are illegal in Seattle – you’re looking at the rules for *unincorporated* King County (areas that aren’t within any city’s boundaries, such as White Center, Shorewood, Top Hat to the south). And chances are, what you heard isn’t even legal there. Anyway, sorry, don’t know who’s setting them off but you can report to police – though they ask that you not call 911 about fireworks unless there is an attached emergency such as someone injured or something burning, they do announce the reports over the police radio in case officers are in the area. – Tracy @ WSB

anonymeParticipantWe have a neighbor who sets up a major fireworks launching pad in the center of a residential side street, where he sets off major fireworks for hours on end. I have watched as a patrol car approached the illegal (in several ways) obstruction, maneuver carefully around the pile so as not to cause any disruption, and go on his way. Not even a word to the culprit. I have also spent more than 45 minutes on hold for the non-emergency number, as the strictest caution from SPD regarding fireworks is not directed toward lawbreakers, but the citizen (gasp!) who actually thinks they have a right to report crimes and maybe even have legitimate action taken to stop them. This city has very effectively shut down any avenue of complaint to law abiding citizens who want to see fireworks laws enforced.
It’s a crime.

TonyDParticipantYou might as well hang up, The police are NOT going to show up to your fireworks complaint..
I suggest you go buy some ear plugs..Give it a few hours, it’s going to get worse.
Happy July 4th to you.July 4, 2017 at 8:04 pm #887834
GrouchoParticipantSome really good ones going off in Arbor Heights, about an hour way from sunset.

J242ParticipantGet an extra long garden hose and dowse their fireworks after they start setting them off.
Its disrespectful to be launching them for vets, infants and pets while also being illegal. No respect for these idiots shooting off noise makers, the city already puts on an infinitely better show than all of these jerks could combined. Knock it off morons.
It’s far past time for people to start cracking down on this. It’s not about the 4th, these people do the same thing for every Seahawks game or random holiday as well. STOP IT!

J242ParticipantI encourage everyone to call in any/everyone they see lighting off fireworks. I’m sick and tired of having my infant daughter woken up and our beloved dog trembling in terror by these jerks who think it’s perfectly acceptable to “make things go boom”. I’m not an old guy or anything (not that that should matter one bit but…), this isn’t a “get off my lawn” situation. This is just absurd and people need to be stopped.
Yelling at people to knock it off doesn’t work, time for SPD to earn their salaries and put their collective foot down to stop this crap. My garden hose only reaches so far…July 4, 2017 at 11:54 pm #887864
JeannieParticipantIndependence Day is my least-favorite holiday. The Declaration of Independence is certainly worth celebrating, but I doubt most of the jerks shooting off firecrackers care about the historic significance. Ironically, the “patriotic” people with their firecrackers are being disrespectful of our brave veterans suffering from PTSD.
If you have pets, one way to acclimate them to the inevitable racket is to play a fireworks audio (there are several designed for pets on YouTube) in the week or weeks leading up to the 4th. Start by playing it softly, and just for a few minutes. Be observant of your pet’s reaction. If they’re cool with it, you can gradually increase the volume, day by day. It probably helps to reassure your pet while the audio is playing – maybe talking calmly and/or petting and/or feeding them a treat.

GreystreetParticipantThis year seemed a ton worse than year’s past for some reason. Between the dog’s being scared out of their wits–I do appreciate the suggestion for desensitizing them above with a youtube video, I’ll have to try that–to me being up until 2-3AM…I’m a nurse, and coming to work today on barely any sleep is super unsafe, but I don’t have a choice. I am sick and tired of living in place that claims that an activity is illegal but does NOTHING to curb, control or even prohibit the action of. I feel like even if Seattle does annex White Center, it’s not going to change anything where fireworks are concerned. It’d be one thing if they were pretty fireworks that people were setting off to look at their bright colors and sparkles and were done by, at the latest, 2300. But no, these are loud, mortar shells that just explode for no good reason and disrupt everything, even my wifi signal was bad last night with all the electricity in the air. What happened to the days of sparklers, smoke bombs and those snake things….So over this

Michael WaldoParticipantMaybe we need a team of large men to form an anti-fireworks vigilantly group to confront these self centered idiots who have no respect for hard working people who need their sleep or for traumatized animals or veterans suffering from PTSD. It has become out of control. And our police will not enforce the laws on the books, which I think is shameful and leads to over all disrespect for the law.
