Peak fig season in Seattle is right now.

Figs are not nearly as common in this area as apples.
Which is odd, because fig trees are actually much easier to take care of than apple trees, and are more resistant to pests as well.
Of course, you won’t get as much fruit off a fig tree as you can off an apple, but you can still get a hundred figs or more off one small tree. And the trees themselves are quite beautiful.

I got my tree from a neighbor, who gave me a small sucker off of her tree. In five years, my tree has grown to 10 feet and provides a nice shady spot in my back yard.
Like all fruit trees, figs like the sun, though they will grow in partial shade as well. (The sunnier the spot, the more compact the tree and the bigger and juicier the fruit.)

For flavor and texture, there is no other fruit quite like the fig. You can pluck one right off the tree and start munching; four bites and they’re gone. No mess.

Some people around here complain about starlings and other birds getting into their figs. I don’t have that problem because I made a deal with the starlings in my neighborhood:
You don’t eat my figs and I won’t spray you with a hail of 50-calibre rounds.
Just teasing . . . I would never fire off a machine gun in my own back yard.
The starlings don’t know that, though.
Stupid birds.
August 15, 2012 at 4:37 pm #767145DBP…if you ever are willing to share some of those figs, let me know. I ADORE figs, in any shape or form. Another friend of ours had a tree, and would share, but her brother cut it down…how sad…
you know where to find me…

August 15, 2012 at 6:01 pm #767147The squirrels and rats [yes, rats they sneak out at night and gnaw them] eat ours along with the birds. We also have had a fig tree for years and it is a great producer. Ours are not ripe yet..any idea what variety you have?
August 15, 2012 at 6:39 pm #767148I love figs, my friend called and will out of town for a month when theirs will be ripe. They said I could have them all, I will post and share with others!
August 15, 2012 at 6:50 pm #767149Oh you pictures brought back such awesome memories! My Grandparents had a fig tree that produced those wonderful green and pink figs (we called them strawberry figs – not sure if that is their real name). Besides using them in breads and cookies, my grandmother would cut them in half, scoop a small bit of mascarpone cream on top and them drizzle just a hint of honey over them for us – add a glass of her mint sun tea = the best afternoon snack ever.
August 15, 2012 at 7:00 pm #767150I like to slice them, throw them in a salad with romaine hearts and blue cheese, a little balsamic vinaigrette…yummm..oh, and a handful of chopped walnuts, too..
August 15, 2012 at 7:37 pm #767151I’ll make sure you get some, Jan. Sorry, I don’t know what variety these are.
August 16, 2012 at 5:56 am #767152They look like little aliens inside to me, plus I just do not like figs.
I have some for you Jan. As my brother pretty chopped my entire tree down, what branches that are there are falling down because they are to top heavy. So you may have a bag full this week:)))
I will get them to ya:)

September 1, 2012 at 10:33 pm #767156I wish we had figs! We moved to West Seattle this last year, and the one thing I miss is a producing fig tree. Such a delicious treat of summer!
September 1, 2012 at 10:34 pm #767157Katman…I would love a fig start also ;-) Thank you!
September 6, 2012 at 4:51 am #767158Our neighbors are all enjoying the harvest from our tree that we so covet (as do the starlings, wasps, and raccoons. Try cutting them in half, topping with goat cheese, sprinkle with pancetta, broil, and drizzle with honey. Orgasmic!

September 8, 2012 at 3:35 am #767160The squirrels used to eat all my figs. This spring we got a pet chicken. Since the chicken arrived, the squirrels and birds are not bothering my fruit trees any more. Coincidence? I got a great first crop of brown figs this year.
September 20, 2012 at 1:56 am #767161Katman- do your trees produce? I have a fig tree that doesn’t ever make ripe figs. I’d love to get one that actually makes figs.
