JeffroMemberAre there any birders out there could help me ID the bird I saw in our yard. It was between 1 and 2 feet, and it looked much smaller than the hawks I’m used to seeing on top of light posts along I-5. Coloring was light gray with maybe some white underneath. The remarkable thing about it was a very prominent, hooked beak (black). I could swear it was a falcon, but I’ve never been that close to a bird like that before! What kind of bird would I likely have seen in this area?

WSBKeymasterCheck the photo in this post to see if it looked anything like this:

If not … it might also help if you mentioned something about which neighborhood you’re in — definitely different bird presence in different parts of West Seattle.

JeffroMemberI guess it could have been one of those cooper’s hawks, but I feel like its beak was bigger proportionally to its head than the hawk in that picture. I think the description of the peregrine most closely fits what I saw. Neighborhood is Admiral/Schmitz Park area. I wish I had gotten a longer look at it. It immediately caught my eye, as I’ve never seen a bird that big flying in between the houses and trees like that.

AlkiMacParticipantI’ve had a Cooper’s hawk in my yard on Alki.
Cornell University has a cool website on birds with lots of info:

A similar looking hawk is the Swainson’s:

If it was hunting small birds, it was most likely a Cooper’s.
Cheers.

JoBParticipanti saw what i was pretty sure was a peregrine falcon in the trees below our place.. we live on the ridge above Lincoln Park… a couple of weeks ago.
We got a telescope to watch the boats on the sound, so i got a pretty good view…
hummingbirds use one of the bushes in our yard as a resting point on their way up the hill… there must be feeders further up… and i got an incredbile view of a ruby throated hummingbird yesterday…
not to mention the eagles that occasionally play in the winds over the sound.
and the scores of other birds i struggle to identify…

WSMomParticipantEvery spring a flock of little brown birds descends upon my pampas grass plumes to feather their nests, it’s wonderful! Amazing to watch these little birds carrying a payload in their beak wider than their wing span.
Spring has sprung and I’m soooo happy!!

JeraldParticipantWe have ospreys along the Duwamish and I occasionally see them over the WS Bridge and above Alki. They have a black beak, are gray/black on top with white underneath.

GinaParticipantI had a chicken hawk? coopershawk? land in a tree overlooking my birdfeeder. Had a dash of bright yellow on the beak. Lafayette/South Admiral area, about 2 weeks ago.

B-squaredParticipantI had a cooper’s hawk in the backyard yesterday (NE of lowman beach). He was going after some sparrows in a tangle of vines that trail a fence – where the birds hang out. In his pursuits, he got tangled himself and ended up falling off the fence and landing on the lawn. got a real good look at him at 10ft away. he collected himself and flew to a tree where the crows proceeded to badger him. poor guy, probably wished he had stayed in bed.
