zephyrParticipantTonight while passing through the Emma Schmitz Overlook Park along Beach Drive, I noted a drone flying and being maneuvered to shore. I quickly asked the operator if drones were allowed in Seattle Parks and he responded ‘yes, they were’. That didn’t sound right so I looked online and found this: Seattle Parks Department rule 18.12.265, which states:
It is unlawful to operate any motorized model aircraft or motorized model watercraft in any park except at places set apart by the Superintendent for such purposes or as authorized by a permit from the Superintendent.
So perhaps they had a permit. I wasn’t around long enough to find out. It was getting dark and I had to get back home. I hope this doesn’t become a “thing” in the parks. That’s a place I go to enjoy the views and sunsets. Buzzing drones would be a buzzkill.
The link didn’t show up the first time, so I am just pasting the it here. http://www.seattle.gov/parks/about-us/rules-and-regulations

CurateParticipantI imagine that this statute, if in fact it applies, is challenged dozens of times a day across the public parks in Seattle. Drones are ubiquitous and regulations are failing to keep up. That said, I can’t imagine Seattle police being able to do much about enforcement of the statute . . . drone operators = the new off-leash-dog owners?

anonymeParticipantIf drones are going to be allowed, so should ‘skeet’ shooting. It would be tons of fun shooting those MF’s out of the sky, and no animals would be hurt in the process.

skeeterParticipantI’ll take drones over off-leash dogs any day! Off-leash dogs share close proximity to my family on trails. The drones are typically used in open fields that don’t really threaten me. That being said, if drones are not allowed then I’m okay with enforcing the rules.
