karenParticipantFor the last several mornings I have woken to that smell. The odor comes from the LaFarge Cement Plant . Several people have been fighting this smell for the last six years. Puget Sound Clean Air worked hard to get the cement plant to clean up it’s air emissions. Finally some agreement was reached. I’m not sure what it was but now when I call to file an odor complaint, I am told that they will not issue tickets or look into the complaints against LaFarge because the case is closed.
It was determined by PSCAA that the smell was caused by nitrogen oxide emissions. NO causes breathing problems, burning in the lungs and in children can lead to breathing problems such as asthma. No also combines with other airborne pollutants to combine toxic chemicals. It contributes to acid rain and higher nitrate levels in our water supply, killing fish.
If you are smelling this smell, please report it to PSCAA 34-8800 ext 6. When a group of people began complaining the media noticed and changes were made. We need to continue to let them know that this is not acceptable and that we want it fixed.

Heinz57MomMemberIf you give me an idea of a location I’m willing to take my sniffer over there and see if I can place a call as well. I support you in this 1000% I just want to make sure I have a location to report to them.

IrukandjiParticipantA neighbor, particularly sensitive to airborne toxins, shared with me that part of the problem may be that there are no regulations on mercury emission in Washington state, and that the cement plants produce HUGE amounts of said emissions. She, too, is fighting the toxic level of emissions from the cement plants is is being met with similar passivity.

WSBKeymasterKaren, if you have any background such as case numbers etc. – we are “the media” here at WSB as well (and routinely harvested for story ideas by my former colleagues in the citywide media, if you’re having trouble getting their attention yourself) and I would be happy to inquire with PSCAA PA etc. regarding why complaints aren’t being looked into – that doesn’t seem to make sense, to say the least.
