Car backfiring?

On the way home tonight i encountered a car in White Center that disturbed me. It sped up behind me on a side street and passed me.. i know ..what else is new?

But as it pulled up to the stop sign i heard what sounded like pistol shots and saw sparks.. under the car. by the time we entered White Center there had been more pistol like sounds when braking and/or turning .. but no evidence of sparks that i could see.

has anyone else encountered this car? tan.. maybe something like a nissan altima?
