    Now, I’m not bashing the USPS – I realize they have their jobs to do, and in weather, it can be difficult. Does anyone know what their rule is regarding placement of packages that they deliver? I was always under the impression that if they deliver a package to you that doesn’t fit in your mailbox, they are to place it at your front door if it is accessible. We live on a street with no sidewalk or parking, and have a locking mailbox at the bottom of our driveway. Our driveway is steep but easily accessible. Today, for the second time in a few weeks, I’ve found our packages just laying streetside at the foot of our mailbox. I doubt this is our usual carrier, as he’s always delivered them at the top of the driveway. Last year when this happened, I went to the Post Office to complain, but was told that the supervisor was (conveniently) unavailable. Can someone explain what it is our carriers should be doing in this situation? I’ve never been able to locate a phone number for our local West Seattle Post Office, and the one time I made an on-line complaint, it went completely unanswered…I shudder to think of the upcoming holiday season….

    I won’t place orders for merchandise delivered by the USPS for this very reason. They will drop packages on the ground by the mailbox out on the street, in the rain and where they can easily be picked up by anyone passing. On one occasion I found a package that had been thrown over the fence, crushing some plants. Complaining is futile. A few years ago, after getting no answer (or a stupid one) from the Westwood P.O., I began going up the ladder with USPS. After six months of multiple transfers and no answers (to a very simple question, I might add) I was told to contact my local PO.

    Usually you don’t have these problems with your regular carrier. Most packages are delivered by a separate branch of the PO, so the carrier is probably not the problem. I feel your frustration. I think Patty Murray’s office handles postal issues; going through the PO will get you nowhere.

    @anonyme, thanks for the feedback – frustrating all around! Our first two regular carriers were terrific, but the first one retired, and the newest one is here for a few weeks then gone the next few weeks. Maybe I’ll try your method and just order from companies not using USPS – UPS and FedEx have always been great…

    Our carrier (has been delivering to our house for a couple months now) puts packages on the ground/on top of plants just inside our gate. Our old carrier was much better all around and put packages at the door. A long time ago, our wonderful carrier told me they are not allowed to leave packages on the ground and if it doesn’t fit in the box, it goes next to the door. Don’t know if that’s still the case but that’s what he told me.

    @emilyc, thank you…I believed that has been the case all along…I think some of them just don’t want to walk up our driveway so they get lazy…

    I think that’s still the policy, but who will enforce it when you can neither verify the policy nor report violations? It seems like we live in an age of non-accountability.

    We live on a flat street and my husband found a package on the ground outside the gate ..
    i don’t know who delivered it.

    UPDATE: So, I had a positive experience after digging into it a little further. I was able to locate a public phone number for our West Seattle Post Office (206-923-0485) which goes directly in-house and to the supervisor for the mail carriers, Robert. I’ve actually met Robert in the past, so I do know he is who he says he is. I called and spoke with him, and he was able to verify for me that indeed, if the package will not fit in your box slot, then it should be carried to the front door. He apologized,saying that this definitely should never have happened, verified that it was not our usual carrier, and claimed he would speak with the employee as soon as they arrived for their shift. We’ll see if it makes a difference…

    In the mean time, I would encourage anyone who’s dealing with this same issue to call Robert and let him know it’s happened at your home. He was very polite and genuine to deal with; and this is in no way wanting to get a carrier in hot water – but if you’re bound to a particular rule at work, follow it! Package thefts are only going to escalate through the end of the year, so why not do our best to try and improve the situation? I think it’s worth a shot…

    Good to hear the Post Office here was responsive. I’ve generally had good luck with issues. I really like our regular deliverer and am able to have at least a working acquaintance with him. Sometimes the substitutes aren’t quite as great and are a bit inconsistent. In my college years, I worked for UPS and can attest to a tough job these folks have sometimes. I think it’s unfair sometimes that it’s fashionable to complain about these folks. There are the bad 2% anywhere…. Hats off to the good ones.

    Never had an issue with USPS. Packages have always been delivered to my doorstep and I have had nothing but great experiences at my local office.

    Thanks for the post though, almost forgot to order my Christmas ornament.
