I know many people don’t understand the heartbreak over losing a pet, but for me, the pain is very real. It’s been 2 months since my dog of 11 years died, and I’m not over it. She protected me and my home when I wasn’t safe. She kept me company and insisted I play when life was too serious. She was sweet and gentle with people and other animals alike. She thought she was a lap dog trapped in a 100 pound body. I miss her so much more than I ever imagined I could.

Of course I declared then and there, I will never love another (new) animal. I do not want to feel this way ever again. My 9 year old dog had other plans. She was hopelessly depressed. Every day she sat by the front gate. Every night she whimpered and we cried. Her fur started falling out in clumps and she lost all interest in activities.

We honestly didn’t know she would care. She is a rescue Shiba that as the case always is, has many many issues. One of which, is a perpetual grumpy disposition and a desire to be left alone. She barely tolerated the dog she had spent most her life with.

What to do with a very sad household and a moody, dysfunctional, alpha dog. Obviously the situation called for a PUPPY!!

I don’t know what is going on in the forums right now. It seems we’re all out of sorts and on each other’s nerves. Growing pains perhaps, as we pursue all these new relationships. An interesting little microcosm of the community at large.

Something I do know. This week my older dog picked up a toy and presented it to the puppy to play. It was such a momentous act on her part and watching them play tug-o-war was a genuine pleasure. Right now I have this little 4 month old bundle of cuteness curled up under my chin fast asleep. For just this moment, it makes everything seem ok and I wanted to share that with someone.

I hope everyone here can find their moment.

JT – we’ve been right there with you, my friend. Check out the link for “Ares” on our blog (www.shibaguyz.blogspot.com) and you will see what we mean. It’s coming up on two years for us now and I was just thinking about him tonight. Then I found this post.

Thank you for sharing your moment.

Don’t forget to post your pet photos! Click on the pet tab on top of the blog. I think an “In Memorium” section of photos may be needed, for our fur friends.

If anyone has photos to send I would be happy to create such a section.

I always loved the “Rainbow Bridge” stories as well, back when we lost our cat Ariel at age 18 when our son was just a baby … took us almost six years to be ready to open our hearts again to another cat; now we have two adopted as adults from local shelters, one in ’02 and one in ’05 (but they are the same age and the best of friends). Also – Shibaguyz – if you are posting a link in a forum post, just put the whole link in, with http (colon slash slash) before it, and it will work as a link. Your blog, by the way, has been linked from our blogs page for months, apparently before you knew the site existed (I find WS-based blogs routinely by browsing

    http://blogsearch.google.com

for West Seattle-related search terms) — TR

my older play bowed to the little cujo this week.. for the first time… it only took her a little over a year:)

JT – Thank you for sharing that wonderful post. I can tell that it touched a lot of people, not just me. My heart goes out to you and your family for your loss. I wish you many, many more “moments” in the future!

JT, we lost our senior smooth fox terrier (a stray) 4 years ago and I still feel the pains of missing him. I didn’t think I could deal with another pup for a long while after he left. But lo-and-behold I just couldn’t bear not being greeted and loved my my furry friend, so we got a puppy about a month later. A year after that, we adopted another SFT rescue and they, plus we, couldn’t be happier :) They can be little demolition demons, but I wouldn’t give them up for anything. Thanks for the post :)

JT my heart breaks for you, in your loss as well as your gain…I myself have 3 dogs, and have yet to lose one thankfully (the oldest is a 7 year old Siberian Husky, the youngest a 2 year Belgium Shephard/Akita mix, and in the middle is my 3 year old Chihuahua – all are rescues from the KCHS)…coming home to them everyday and getting bombarded by licks and kisses and adoration makes all the mess and trouble they cause (as well as the money they cost!) totally worth it…like you noted with your kids, watching them play contentedly together, or having one of them look at me with their ‘puppy dog’ eyes, or nuzzling me for more attention and love absolutely melts my heart and make everything else going on in the world a little bit better…I am such a sucker for my boys.
