The WS Herald had a front page story Tuesday about the Seattle Police Department (SPD) enforcing July 4th vehicle restrictions after 6 PM in Alki proper (not allowing cars in that area, resident or not). The article stated that they haven’t had such restrictions for “several years”. Well, Friday July 4ths happen every “few years”…

Does anyone who has a better memory recall when SPD did this last? My fear is that beiing blocked from being able to go to Alki, the hoi polloi will invade the non-vehicle-access ‘hoods (the areas away from the restrictions) rendering them impassable. Perhaps this means I need to monitor things more closely, but I’d like to be forewarned. Undoubtedly others in the marginal areas feel the same.

Yes, this is a version of Nimby-lite, but a real concern–A car was broken on another 4th probably due to the increased presence of folks (good and “bad” wandering the streets. I just want to know if the access restrictions have happened recently–my memory is somewhat selective and I don’t recall the last time SPD did this. I’ve lived here for 12 years, and maybe the rain/fog will discourage folks from driving here…

I will stay home in any event, but not remembering if this has happened in the past 10+ years, I am even less certain of what to expect. If any of the WSB community can add their two cents, great. I will be watching the “local” illegal fireworks from the deck, having watered the dry lawns beforehand…

Actually what you read in the paper is a story that we broke here on WSB a week and a half ago.

It is also linked from our 4th of July page for easy reference.

As for when it happened last, that’s the same thing the police told us. However, having lived in WS for 17 years now, I recall many previous traffic shutdowns — didn’t get to see the situation the past few years because I had to work at the TV station producing fireworks broadcasts for three years, then last year we were out of state on the 4th, but this year we will be all over WS covering what’s happening by day and night.
