Betty TMemberI manage my meals as low expense as possible and nothing fancy. Just plain home-cooked food. It would be so nice for them to have a full dinner and I know they appreciate all meals and many repeatedly say so.
I do get a little help here and there along the way, no questions asked. Some in cash and some in foods to cook with. I don’t think it was wrong for him to ask for help and so glad he got it.
I have been homeless to the point of having to stay with a friend even though I was working, but thank heavens not on the streets. I didn’t know homeless people til I started going to Nickelsville last year for their Pig Roast celebrating their anniversary. I saw a need to do this. Didn’t stop me from wanting to help and will continue as long as I’m able Don’t know why someone has to specifically have a connection of some sort to want to help. I became acquainted with Mike there, and still am. There are so many caring people out there who follow this Forum about many things when someone says they need help with something. If they’re able they don’t hesitate to step up. Thank heavens their are caring people in our world.

JoBParticipantOne of the local donors organized a meal calendar for Nickelsville on TakeThemAMeal.com to make it easier for individuals and groups to schedule meal delivery for Nickelsville
To sign up for taking a meal to Nickelsville log onto TakeThemAMeal.com
then enter “nickelsville” in the section for family name’
enter the current calender year “2012” in the section for ‘passcode’.
A schedule should then appear where you can type in the meal donor’s name and contact info…
if it’s a group bringing the meal, please list a specific contact person & their tel.#–just in case some major change in events occurs at Nickelsville)
list the meal menu, if possible, so the next group doesn’t give the camp residents the same food.
If you have any problems or questions you can contact Mary Anne DeVry, 206-790-3631.

Betty TMemberI’m on that calendar. Notice hardly any use of it.
I’m doing spaghetti this Saturday because somone gave me some turkey meatballs. Will soon be doing soups because it stays hot longer in the cold and hope it helps warm people up a little, from inside out. Its also inexpensive to cook.

JoBParticipantBetty…
i am hoping that advertising the calendar will create more use…
and more regular and diverse meals for Nickelodeans
When i feel up to it i will likely do a repeat of the Mac and Cheese and link sausage that earned me my reputation as a cook ;->
who would have thought that would get more raves that roasted pork?

RagsParticipantGene: Just a little unsolicited advice: bag the high end catering company. Go to Costco and buy their fully cooked roasted chickens ($5 each), salads, pasta dishes, rolls, desserts, and beverages–all of their food is high quality and delicious! You’ll end up spending half or more of what you would pay a catering company. I go to a lot of parties and everyone of them has Costco prepared foods in one form or another.

JoBParticipantRags..
i would add to that advice that comfort food is more comfortable for people with the dental and digestive issues prevalent in populations with insecure food supplies and limited preventative medical care.

GeneLeeMemberRags,
Thank you for your suggestions. I urge you to throw a dinner so that you can execute on your great suggestions. I am only doing one dinner, and there are 364 days which still need to be covered.
Thanks,
Gene

RagsParticipantJoB….how do we clone you? You have a heart bigger than anyone I know–thanks for just being there! Good advice on keeping in mind the “dental and digestive issues,” which is something I would not have been aware of.
Gene…..we all contribute in different ways. Yours may be to “throw a dinner” and ask others to contribute monetarily…..mine is to do it with my own monetary contributions, and I give generously to Union Gospel Mission and Bread of Life Mission as well as NW Harvest and Food Lifeline. We each have our own priorities for the causes we choose to support and how we support them–it’s all in the eyes of the beholder. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to devote to putting on dinners with all of my work commitments but wish you success and look forward to hearing about your dinner.

JoBParticipantGeneLee..
We all choose different ways to help our fellow man… you chose a dinner.
I will admit that the pinch every penny to make sure it goes as far as it possibly can old hippy in me cringed at the inclusion of a caterer into your mix before i reminded myself that I will be enjoying a catered Thanksgiving dinner myself this year… without guilt.
It’s not the way i would have used that money.. but it is your choice and the way you have publicized this dinner brings awareness that far outweighs the luxury you are bringing to the occasion.
But i do hope whoever is planning your dinner is aware of the food related digestive issues and also of the lack of safe storage for leftovers…
if you have the funds you might want to consider bringing recyclable leftover containers so that individual campers can create their own leftover meal for later.
trust me.. they will get used.
