GeneLeeMemberTracy from the WSB on Facebook recommended that I post here for support for a cause I am doing.
I am hosing a dinner for the homeless residents of Nickelsville. Nickelsville is a tent city here in seattle. It is home to 115 residents. I am hosting the dinner on December 1, and I could use your help spreading the word.
I have set up a donation page through Indiegogo and YouTube video to help spread the word. If you wouldn’t mind telling your Seattle friends, it would really help me out.
I am trying to raise $1250 to pay for the cost of dinner. Hopefully some of you can make a small contribution. These people really need it. Even a donation of $5 would really help.
Here is a link to the donation page:

Thank you in advance for helping spread the word!

miwsParticipantGene, as a former Resident of NV, and a “Nickelodeon” forever, I want to thank you so much for thinking of my friends down there.
I can tell you that this meal will be much appreciated, especially as we are now getting into the colder and stormier time of year.
You can bet that I’ll be bumping this thread up regularly! ;-)

Dec. 1 is a good day to do your dinner as I have dropped doing my lunch on that day,do to transportation issues. I’m trying to reduce the stress in my own life. Not getting any younger. Will do other Saturdays as long as I’m able. I also chose the first Saturday in the month as there are the fewest people there for lunch then. How good of you to take this on. I’ve been hoping someone would take this Saturday lunch on on a regular basis.

JoBParticipantBetty brings up a good point Gene..
The camp is generally fairly empty the first weekend of the month
the only time you can count on full camp attendance the first weekend of the month is before the mandatory meeting sunday evening…
Making a back up plan for safely storing excess food is probably a good idea.
there are coolers at camp.. but generally no ice to go in them and no containers to effectively store food.

RagsParticipantI really hate to be a cynic–particularly if Gene truly has intentions of hosting a dinner for the homeless; but before you donate money to something or someone you know nothing about, please check it out! Unfortunately, we live in a world filled with scammers–just sayin’!

birdrescuerParticipantThis makes me nervous. Is this a scam?

JoBParticipantbirdrescuer
i have visited all of the sites the OP listed
people i trust have volunteered to work on this dinner
and have shared his information.
I have no reason at all to believe this is a scam.

GeneLeeMemberHello there,
This is Gene Lee, the organizer of this dinner. I guess it was to be expected that people might have their doubts about the authenticity of the event.
I can assure you that this is very real. If you are skeptical, please don’t donate your money, but please come down on Dec 1 to offer a lending hand. You will see first hand what I am trying to do. I am simply trying to bring awareness to the people of Seattle.
This is just 1 dinner, and I hope to do many more. I got my inspiration to do this from working with the Homeless in Seattle group on Facebook. Rex Holbien and his group have been doing some amazing work. I guess if you needed to verify me, you could contact his group. They actually did a write up on me, and featured it on their page.
If you are one of those casting doubt on the group here, I urge you to come meet me. I also urge you to come volunteer on Dec 1. If its a hoax, you will know very quickly. But, I can assure you it is not.
I am a DJ here in Seattle, and have been a well known and respected member of the electronic music scene here. I am simply trying to bring awareness to something I have witnessed for years. I also am working on a documentary to also bring awareness.
If you wish to start a dialogue with me, feel free to shoot me an email:

GeneLeeMemberThank you JoB.

RagsParticipantJo….Do you really know this person??? I think what bothered me most is that he never listed his movitation for doing this. Most people want to express gratitude for past circumstances or dedication to a family member who has gone astray, but he did none of this. I don’t know you, but I love you because I think you have a huge heart (much bigger than mine), but I also think your huge heart allows your to accept illogical scenarios. why does he need $1250 to serve dinner when Betty has been doing it for all this time with non-monetary contributions all this time? Just saying….. PS. Don’t lose your huge heart…..just inject a little logic!

GeneLeeMemberRags,
Would you like to meet me? Then maybe you can give us your blessing, and I can throw this dinner. Until then, please keep the negative comments to yourself. If you would like to meet, email me and I will send you my number.

GeneLeeMemberRags,
I urge you to pose the same line of questioning on the Facebook event page. Maybe you will get your validation there.
P.S. I’m still waiting for your email…

WSBKeymasterI’ve deleted the rudest note in this thread. Anyone else who is interested – I actually pointed Gene to the Forums (as we do with MANY people who contact us about things that aren’t necessarily news stories but might be of general interest) when he contacted me another way, saying someone had suggested WSB would be a place to mention his plan. Seemed to me that not so long ago, there were a fair number of people here with an interest in Nickelsville.
If somebody’s pitch doesn’t resonate with you, certainly ask questions, but please don’t get hostile – ask your questions, see if you get answers. No one is forcing anyone to donate. And also, if you think a post in the forum sounds suspicious, please flag us so we can investigate, before launching a hostile attack. Click “report this post” under ANY post you think is suspicious, rule-breaking, spam, unpaid advertisement, profane, attacking, whatever.
Bottom line in everything, though, is caveat emptor.
thanks
Tracy

JoBParticipantRags..
I have not yet met Gene..
but i am working with Rex and the Homeless in Seattle folks.
I have met personally with Rex and i wholeheartedly support his organization’s efforts to assist individual homeless people’s survival.
I too believe that if you show people love, they begin to have confidence in themselves and what had seemed impossible suddenly becomes a series of doable steps.
I have witnessed this transformation myself.. both in the work i have been doing and the work Rex has facilitated.
I have been working with and beside Homeless in Seattle quietly,
but if you check the Homeless in Seattle Facebook page you will find that Rex outed me for a donation I made recently to an individual there.
I haven’t let him post my picture yet because that’s not my way… but i suspect i will soon…
he makes a compelling argument about the face of compassion being as motivating as the face of need.
I guess you could say Rex at Homeless in Seattle has a heart too big for his reason as well..
but he is a locally successful architect. He has been public about his involvement with the homeless community for some time.
In the course of working with them he has come into contact with both the homeless people he cares for and those who prey on the homeless.
Like me, he has had no choice but to develop a pretty sensitive bullshit detector.
I don’t think you can call a man who had the courage to spend a month in a homeless encampment to better understand the reality of homelessness naive.
He walked in with nothing, was treated no differently than any other homeless person and accepted no outside aid while he was there. He has a better informed grasp of the current realities of being homelessness in Seattle than I do.
I trust his judgment on this.
I too was concerned about the amount of money that Gene is trying to raise for this meal in light of what i know Betty and other cooks who provide meals for Nickelsville and those who support them spend…
but then i realized that most of the Nickelsville cooks i know pride themselves on providing a meal for the least possible cost…
because they provide meals regularly and need their money to stretch as far as possible.
I can pretty much guarantee you that those who provide the kind of meals that are talked about for months in camp aren’t that frugal with their resources because i helped fund the first anniversary celebration after Nickelsville came back to West Seattle.. and we spent nearly as much.
If Gene is trying to provide an awareness event as well as a memorable meal..
his budget isn’t that far off track.
I can’t tell you this person is for real without meeting him myself..
but I have every reason to believe he is sincere.
I am sure we will be meeting soon and i will follow up with my first hand report.

miwsParticipantI clicked on this thread around 6:15-6:30 this morning, with the intention of bumping it up again.
When I read the now deleted comments, it hit a nerve with me, and I didn’t feel I could coherently comment.
I don’t know Gene, but feel confident enough that he is legit, to where I donated a token amount, now that I am fortunate enough to be receiving a modest income.
Although I’ve have not yet met Rex Hohlbein in person, I have been following his Homeless in Seattle FB page for some time now, and have come to greatly appreciate what he does for the Homeless Community.
Thanks, Gene, JoB, WSB, and others for you help and positive comments regarding this.

GeneLeeMemberThank you all for the support. This is my first attempt at an event of this type. It feels good that so many people are getting involved.
Some people have been saying that they cannot access the Facebook invite. I am not sure why, but here is the link again.
https://www.facebook.com/events/111601078999337
I am meeting with Apulent Catering tomorrow to discuss the menu, and how it can work with the money I have raised. I hope to provide a QUALITY meal.
Thanks,
Gene

WSBKeymasterGene – I can’t see the FB event either. You might need to check to be sure it’s a PUBLIC event – not a FRIENDS event – we use FB event links a lot for our calendar, because many organizations use them, and that’s the most common mistake I see – TR

GeneLeeMemberGreat point!!! I was wondering why others couldnt see it! I changed it to public. It should work now.

miwsParticipantBumping this again, because even though Gene reached his goal for the cost of the Dinner, he has promised to donate any further funds directly to Nickelsville.
Good ol’ USD’s are always appreciated at NV, because costs of just the port-potties and dumpster, are in the neighborhood of $5,000.00/mo, the last I knew.
