Yikes!

  1. The estimated cost of Laura Bush and Cindy McCain's outfits for the RNC:

Thanks to Vanity Fair, we know how an idea of how much their outfits probably cost. Check out the estimates:

    Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
    Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
    Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
    Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325

    Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
    Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
    Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
    Shoes, designer unknown: $600
    Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

Thanks, gonna go be sick now. Her outfit cost more than a nice house in West Seattle!

  2. Cindy McCain is wearing my neighbor's house.

Any totals for Michelle? She always looks impeccable.

  3. And you don't think any of that jewelry was borrowed? Celebrities do it all the time.

Just one of Cindy McCain's many homes are worth more than that, just a day's spending for her.

Remember - Cindy comes from money! She probably owns the necklace.

All that money, and she still looked ridiculous. IMO

    Posted 3 years ago #
  7. It's possible if she did buy them that they aren't brand new. People with lots of money can afford expensive things and are still capable of giving money away. Besides, did anybody ask her personally if she actually owned all the stuff? Assumptions.

I'm curious how much it cost to stage and conduct the rock concert, I mean speech, that Obama gave in Denver, with all Greco-Roman columns and lighting and such. Anyone?

    Posted 3 years ago #
  9. Ah - the first Palin regurgitation of the day! I bet it was comparable to Cindy's outfit and looked a lot better.

  10. politics really brings out the best in people.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  11. But not the best in fashion, evidently.

NR-You're comparing two completely different things.

An EVENT staging his speech has absolutely no comparison to a couple of old rich broads wearing pointlessly over expensive clothes.

Please don't make this another political debate. And no I'm not a Dem or a Repub.

Ms. McCain was chaperoning the prom. (why does this whole thing feel like high school?)

Cad - You're right. The staging of an event and the cost of an outfit are completely different.

However, in terms of importance and relevance, I think they are pretty comparable.

NR - I recognize your point, in that both are flashy and entirely un-necessary.

But there is a large difference. At least in the way I see it. The event brought people together, people of like minds who can come together to one place, one point in time. Which in itself was probably overwhelming. And the physical appearance was simply an ambiance catering to low/middle class people being taken out of their ordinary in order to enhance their visit.

I don't find the materialism to cater to anyone but people who can admire the price tag.

There is no excuse to be wearing a house, just for sh**s and giggles.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  16. My guess is that the Dem's columns weren't brought about by child labor. Need we bring up where those diamonds came from? I think that's a major difference.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  17. Simmer down, people. lord, I didn't even mean for this to be political. More fashion minded. It just blew my mind. That was such an ugly dress (in my taste, anyway) I couldn't believe it cost so much.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  18. Thanks for the reality check... *whew*

Oscar de la Renta makes some gorgeous dresses and I believe she may have skipped right over them. I love how all the first ladies are going the Jackie-O route this year. If only we could bring Oleg Cassini back from designing dresses for David's Bridal and back to dressing potential first ladies...

  19. NR, can you justify the cost of re-working a perfectly good stage just so Grandpa can be "closer" to his people ?

  21. Make no mistake about it.. the show of excess at the Republican convention was created to show americans what they can't have.. while creating the illusion that their policies will deliver that excess to the rest of us.

it's just another pot at the end of a very tarnished rainbow...

    but.. look who's buying it.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  22. There are many people out there that have things that I can't have. BOOHOO!!!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  23. Oh, nuni, don't make the mistake that we want what they have.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  24. nuni, every time I see your name I think of that hilarious sketch from SNL and it makes me giggle. ;)

  25. CP, I was kidding...I couldn't care less about what they have. My point is that there are ALWAYS going to be people out there that have more than others. Usually they work hard for what they have and sometimes they are born in to money. I guess I don't really understand why that bothers some people so much.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  26. JenV, Oh my gosh that is hilarious! My family sometimes still calls me Nuni but also that Natalie Portman is playing Nuni and she's Israeli and so am I. Strange coincidence.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  27. Well what bothers me is that I'm not all that convinced that most of these people get all that money with integrity. But I do see your point - there are many people that do earn it honestly. I'm just very wary of people with money these days. Money and corruption are kind of chickens and eggs to me.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  28. I guess I am naive in my thinking that I should give people the benefit of the doubt. Unless I see hard (unbiased) evidence that somebody did something crooked and that is how they have money I will not judge that they are bad people based on the fact that they are republican or democrat.

  29. I think we should have Project Runway design outfits for the first spouses...now that would be funny.

  30. OMG! Michelle Obama in "Letha!"

    Posted 3 years ago #
  31. hehehe...but dear Stella is gone, gone, gone....

    Posted 3 years ago #
  32. and now I have been outed as someone who doesn't watch PR on a regular basis. ;) Fine- can Michelle be "girlicious"?

    Posted 3 years ago #
  33. I think that's a really great idea actually!!! Why has no one thought of this before?! Cindy McCain should have a matching leash as an accessory because she looks like a poodle more every day. (No one tell your poodle I said that - I've heard they're vicious.)

  34. Here is an ABC news article on Cindy McCain's outfit one night at the convention.

  36. Zenguy, very interesting article, thank you for posting! That pretty much sums up my feelings on the issue.

  37. Sigh. I thought I was keeping up with trends in glasses, and now Sarah Palin has started a new trend. Dang, those glasses are cute.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  38. She looks like Tina Fey. There I said it!!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  39. well, I think she looks more like Peggy Hill...

    Posted 3 years ago #
  40. okay okay, well if Tina Fey ever went back to SNL you know who she's going to be playing!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  41. without a doubt, nuni...she would do a great job. hopefully they will bring her back at least as a guest to do it soon!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  42. i think cindy MCCain's show of excess is in bad taste...

she is way overdressed for a convention...

    Posted 3 years ago #
  43. I liked what Bill Maher said of Michelle Obama last week on his show, "Half Jackie, half Jackée", made me laugh. I don't think she's paying as much for her clothes as Cindy McCain, but I like her style. Maybe flats will be more fashionable...

    Posted 3 years ago #
  44. Not sure about the convention, but Michelle's dress for her appearance on "The View" made headlines - for the opposite reason! :)

  45. I am impressed. She likely has designers offering her clothing and she is sticking with affordable chic..

altho i have to confess that i still think $150 is steep for a dress. But, it is attainable.

I think that is the message that the democratic party needs to slam home... that success is attainable with the policies of the democratic party...

and i think she has done it well.

    cudos.

Kind of funny.. but i kept thinking that the designers name sounded familiar... and then it hit me. That is the same designer that i used for my bridesmaid dresses. I feel so hip to be using the same designers as Michelle. :)
