Each day for the past three, some kind of creature is digging a progressively deeper and wider hole in my garden behind my daylilies. I've never had this before. Mole tunnels that have collapsed, yes, but this is different. It started at about six inches wide and deep. Now, it is a foot and a half deep on one side and about 2 1/2 feet wide with piles of my nice loamy soil have been kicked or pawed away. Racoon? Opposum? Chupie? On a grub hunt? And I don't think it is a cat either--no poo and waaay too deep.

I'm stumped. And my daylilies roots are exposed. What is it and how do I deter it without hurting it.

    Thanks experts.

Is someone's pup sneaking in a digging in secret?

Ok then. I'll douse it with pepper! Thanks! But what is it that's doing it?
And it happens at night....three feet from my bedroom window and I have heard nothing. My yard is completely fenced in from puppy type of critters too.

Maybe I'll hear a chupacabra sneezing one night soon. :)

We had a similar mystery when I was a kid in Denver - my dad set a trap, and after catching a couple of cats we got the intended victim. Turned out to be a badger - never seen one before or since. The wildlife folks came out and took it out of town to release it (at least that's what my dad told me at the time - he knew I'd have a fit if they killed it) So you never know - try setting a trap and see what you get.

    A shorebird??? :/

I just googled this. I should have before I asked I guess. Opposums will dig for worms and bugs. Well! I never have had one do it in * my* garden. Threw me off for a minute. Thanks all.

We've had cats digging in our garden. In hindsight, maybe planting that catnip wasn't such a good idea. :-)
