Why wear the pants?

  1. I was in Westwood Village today. I was walking back to my vehicle and in front of me were two young males. One had some loose pants that were riding low. The other guys pants were below the buttocks. I don't know how they weren't falling down further. The undergarments were definitely in plain view. I couldn't stop laughing but I was too nice, or chicken, to make fun of this fashion. Why is this such a popular fashion for young men? I know youth rebel and do their thang, but this just looks silly. I celebrate my graduation into old fogey ville.

  2. I remember seeing this style back in the 90s when I was still in high school.

This means I'm probably old enough to be these kids' mother.

Tell 'em they're wearing a style their parents' generation originated. ;)

I seem to recall reading that the style originated in prison where belts were prohibited.

  4. I heard that too, Tom. What I don't get is how come they don't fall down? Never seen that happen.

  6. I've read that too, though it also has to do with the likelihood of the clothes you're issued not fitting correctly, usually erring on the side of too big. Combine that with a lack of belts and poof! A sartorial style is born.

  7. So cool to emulate prisoners; after all, our heroes and role models should be drug dealers, murderers, and robbers. Perhaps the lowered pants are for easy access.

Now, wait...where did I put my chains?

  8. Ehh, it's not like that's new...and I wonder how many of the people who do it know where it comes from. Maybe they wear their pants that way because their favorite rap stars do, or something.

It'll pass. Most stupid fashions do.

  9. All I know is the PT's, orthopedist's, chiropractor's and massage therapist's are going to be overloaded with new patients at some point down the road -- the funky way they have to walk to keep those pants up is wreaking havoc on their low backs and pelvis' if you ask me!!!!

  10. So do high heels, but people wear them anyway.

I'm just waiting for when you can buy pants "pre-sagged", as it were...with the waistband sewn to a pair of boxers or briefs at just the right height. (Think it's unlikely? I came across a retro-80s lace skirt and pair of leggings recently that had been sewn together, presumably to save the wearer the 2.5 additional seconds it would take to put them on separately in the morning. The mind reels.)
