Are we able to open discussions in a public forum with members of our own community without being attacked and insulted? Is it not possible to express our opinions without belittling someone else? if your not interested in a topic or dont agree, can you not just move on to something else? Lets all try to be positive and supportive!

Why Must We Insult Each Other

i agree with your premise...
but am not sure who was being personally attacked today...Posted 2 years ago # -
The nature of a public forum (which this isn't, truly, as Tracy and Patrick maintain full control over the content), is that we can express our opinions. You put the information out there and people will comment on it. If you don't like it, or feel it's bordering on personal attacks, there is a "report this post" option under each person's comments. If it is, in fact, inappropriate and against WSB's commenting rules, it will be deleted.
Otherwise, people are under no obligation to agree with you or to be "positive and supportive." Such is human nature and thus the nature of the internet. You won't solve it by telling people to ignore the topic or to shut up about it; in fact, it will further polarize other commenters against you.Posted 2 years ago # -
And ditto JoB as far as not seeing where these "personal attacks" are. You commented on the health risks of a tanning salon under construction, and people in turn commented on the irony of complaining about certain health risks while clearly ignoring the huge risk of using a tanning bed. That's not a personal attack, it's logic.

SarahScoot...
Tracy and Patrick certainly have the right to control content on this forum..
but so far they have only exercised that right when comments exceed the bounds of their guidelines... which impose civility and fairness.
There is a difference between imposing guidelines and controlling content... i know of only two subjects that are off limits here... one due to Patrick's personal understanding of taste.. he bans anything he considers scatological.. and the other due to ongoing legal issues.
There is also a difference between attacking people and attacking ideas... too often neither posters nor readers can tell the difference.
And all of us have days which make that line even harder to recognize...
Not me of course.. i am above all that ;->

I didn't say I take issue at all with Tracy and Patrick's control, but they do control all content. That doesn't mean they censor or even read all content, but they have every right, at any given moment, to delete or edit as they see fit. Also, this website is owned by them; that in itself means it is not a "public forum." It is publically-accessible, yes, but there are no "rights" here. And that's fine, because T & P have their own rights, including the right to enforce their own guidelines as they deem appropriate.
And like you said, their guidelines include civility and not personally attacking others, so like *I* said, the OP can report anything she feels is in violation of those rules.Posted 2 years ago # -
For the record, no one has reported anything to us today for review. Many days there are one or two, and we always look as soon as we can, though we may not agree that it's a violation. (And we also appreciate those who have used the feature not necessarily to say "this is a violation" but "this is something you might want to be aware of, or might want to elevate to the home page" - THANK YOU.)

Point Proven.

unfortunately, in a forum such as this there will often be a snarky remark such as in post #8. Of course, there's the "ignore" button, but that sometimes messes with continuity, IMO. I guess sometimes we have to choose what we'll respond to, and we simply have the option to just not respond to the snarky posts. Eventually, one would hope that they would disappear. (I'm betting not, though). Just don't get into the fray with them.

angr77...
and what point do you think it is that was proven?
no-one has yet called anyone anything even remotely resembling a name...unless you count nomoneynohoney who is using this thread to stir his own personal pot... and even then he doesn't say who needs to get a life...
are you doing a bit of pot stirring of your own?
