   We have a huge fig tree in our back yard. It is a Kadota Fig tree so the figs are bright green (rather than turning dark purple like Mission Figs). I guess these would be considered organic as I don't spray the tree or do anything but prune it (although I don't have any sort of organic certificate or anything). The fig season is VERY short. Our figs are at their peak ripeness and are very sweet. These are huge, beautiful figs. We have way too many for us to eat although we'll be having figs and prosciutto for an appetizer tonight. In the next couple of days the birds will likely get to these and they'll be gone until next year. If some of you out there in WSB land would be interested in some fresh figs for dinner tonight I would be glad to pick some for you and you can take them home. We are in the Admiral District and (long) walking distance from the Sunday Market. Perhaps you'd like to stop by for a fig treat? They do not get any fresher than this (they're still on the tree). I have no way of knowing if I'll get lots of responses or very few so don't take it personally if we run out. Please don't take more than you'll eat today or tomorrow as their shelf life is also short. I'd love to give them to a local restaurant for a special dessert or appetizer but I think there are health department restrictions agains that. Just respond to this post and we'll figure out a way to get some free fresh figs on your plate tonight! Have a wonderful figgy kind of day!

   This rings a bell for me. My aunt and uncle lived in Davis, CA, and out by their back fence was a big fig tree that in the fall was full of purple figs. Once upon a time I rode down there on a bicycle, not because of the figs but to see my grandmother. I'd be happy to see a fig tree in West Seattle. rod at rodclark dot net.

   Another thought...deliver some to our local fire stations or our precinct. The cooks at the firestations would be thrilled. I've done this in the past when I had a plum crop so huge the food bank and the senior center couldn't take any more.

    You might want to talk to the people at Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle. They pick fruit and donate it to the local food banks.

    All the donation ideas are wonderful, but to clarify a point, restaurants and produce stands CAN purchase produce from non-farmers.
    I believe that Meander's actively pursues local produce and gives meal vouchers to the "farmers." I would be surprised if Mark Fuller at Spring Hill did not also buy "out the back door."

    Thanks dawsonct. I did not know that. I don't have anywhere near 80 pounds of figs and after tonight I may have none. I also wasn't looking to sell, just share with my neighbors. But, it's good to know that the option exists if I ever grew anything in volume. Perthaps if my back yard wasn't shaded by a giant fig tree I might be able to plant something else (assuming we actually get to have a summer in the future).

    Figs are now all gone - I was able to give 30 pounds or so to WSB readers. Yesterday we heard a loud commotion in the back yard. We ran to the door only to find that the birds had finally discovered our juicy figs and they were "swarming" our tree. Till next year. . . . .
