  3. We'll get a lot more info tomorrow when, as noted in the story, the various agencies gather reps at Steve Cox Park to brief The Media, WSB/WCN included. Should be interesting, to say the very least.

  4. From today's Times:

    • More than 50 arrests, including 23 people charged federally with firearms, drug dealing and drug possession offenses.

    • Seizure of 51 pounds of methamphetamine and 12 pounds of crack and powder cocaine.

    • Seizure of 68 firearms, including sawed-off shotguns and assault-style semiautomatic rifles.

OK, so that takes care of [some] of the hard-core thugs. Now what about all the bums, drunks, and chronic marijuana "patients"?

According to the Times piece, a couple of neighborhood groups (the Highline Unincorporated Area Council and the White Center/Delridge Safety Coalition) had been pushing for this. My hat's off to them! But now these groups need to put pressure on the King County Sheriff's office to keep an eye on downtown White Center and not NEGLECT IT again, like they had been doing for the past several years.

I'm willing to give White Center businesses another try, but if I don't see some real and lasting change as a result of these busts, the honeymoon ain't gonna last very long . . .

  5. DBP...

the best way to clean up White Center is to spend time and money in the business district.

it doesn't take a lot to make landlords see the possibilities...

  6. I was trying to go there. I even got scared and I can walk the streets in downtown Seattle at 2-3 AM and not feel scared. Even during the middle of the day in white center, I did not want to stick around.

Things have progressively gotten worse. Especially at papa's.

I am glad this able to happen and hope things will clean up.

I've got to say, I think all of the businesses in White Center would benefit from a clean up. THere are several I love (Full Tilt! Proletariat! Mike's! Zippy's! WOOT!) but Papa's and the other bars kind of keep me away from the area more than I would like. Kinda scarry to think of 51 LBS of meth really.

Kinda scarey to think of 68 firearms in the hands of people under the influence of meth.

  10. I've never felt particularly ill at ease in White Center, but where I grew up people were known to get mugged in broad daylight on the street, so maybe I'm not the best judge here. (Silver Spring, MD, for those of you playing along at home. It's much better now, largely due to the Discovery Channel choosing to locate its HQ there. Businesses moving in can be a very good thing.)

Until fairly recently, the neighborhood vibe felt better than it did 10 years ago when I first moved to the area. I'm hoping that bringing the KCSO storefront back will help. Not to mention this massive bust.

It's really too bad that White Center is so shabby. The location and layout are the potentially perfect foundation for a thriving, multi-ethnic business district. I'm glad to hear some cleanup is going on.

Having grown up in Detroit during the riots of the '60's (Detroit was also "murder capitol of the U.S. at the time) White Center doesn't scare me that much - at least not in the daytime. It does gross me out, though.

I lived in White Center for five years before they even remodeled the main streets near Marv's Broiler and Brewskey's on 16th. I never had a problem or felt threatened and use to work late and come back after midnight and walk five blocks to my apartment on 15th by the Texaco, the main street/intersection by Bartells. Never was threatened. I've seen drug dealers and thugs yes..but I've been in far worse hoods. I'm glad they have taken some effort, but this won't stop the bleeding. Some of the best ethnic food is in that hub. I miss going to that Peruvian restaurant damn good food. There are wors hoods in Honolulu than what's in Seattle. Kalihi anyone?

  15. JanS, I wasn't allowed to go to Anacostia. ;) In some ways I had a very sheltered upbringing.

  16. datamuse, I lived in Alexandria in the late 60's , early 70's...I wouldn't go near Anacostia. Waynster..WC has some great businesses. But if people won't go to them, then the gangs, thugs will think they own the whole place. It CAN be cleaned up, but it will take an effort and perseverance. Go to Full Tilt, Proletariat, 3.14 Bakery, Company, Zippy's..there is plenty of good there..

Damn it-the jello shots at papas were the strongest I've ever had-but come to think about it maybe they were crack shots??? I wondered why they served them in a syringe (totally not joking about that!)
