Which came first: chicken or cage? (I-1130)

  1. Coming soon to a street corner or grocery store near you: I-1130 petitions.

    http://yeson1130.com/ [Warning! Graphic!]

I-1130 is a modest anti-cruelty, pro-health ballot measure that will outlaw so-called battery cages for egg-laying hens in Washington. It will also require that no eggs be sold here unless the chickens that laid them were kept in cages that allow them to stand up, turn around, and stretch their wings.

Does that seem like a lot to ask? Oh for God's sake! The first thing I thought was: Why isn't this ALREADY the law?

I-1130 will not mandate that chickens be allowed outside cages, be fed organic grain, or anything like that. It merely requires that caged chickens be allowed to stand up and turn around and have a minimum of air.

Please sign the petition and vote for the law if it makes it onto the ballot. I'll try to get some of the petitions for the WS Neighbors for Peace table at the Junction on Sundays.

Thank you for taking this small step to reduce cruelty!

DP, thanks for posting this. I already signed. De-beaking should be illegal too, but I'm not sure where WA stands on that one...

How sad we have to VOTE to give animals what should be a bare minimum living standard. Can't wait to see how the farming industry lobbies against this one.

Hmmm wheres my frying pan chicken dinner does sound good as for them egg layers they are not pets would it realy make the eggs taste better or is just more political correctness again that the government needs to stay out of.....

  5. Gee Waynster, take a breath. Punctuation is our friend.

Do the eggs taste better? Actually I am sure they do but that is beside the point. Any animal in the care of people should be treated with respect. And I love how "political correctness" has gotten a bad name. If something is correct, does that not mean it is the right thing to do?

  6. The Chickens v. Cruelty, Inc.

    Exhibit A

    Back Yard Chickens (BYC)

    Exhibit B

BYC are sentient creatures. With enough patience, they can be taught to do simple garden chores. Like pooping all over the place.

    Exhibit C

Modern BYC condo unit. Also known as a coop.

    Exhibit D

    Humane BYC confinement device.

This type of equipment is actually soothing to the chicken.

    Exhibit E

    Cackleberries. Price: $10 each.

    Exhibit F

    Front Yard Chickens (FYC)

What's the difference between BYC and FYC? Just a couple weeks in most cases. It depends on how long it takes for the BYC to figure out how to get through the fence into the FY.

What's the difference between BYC and Factory Farmed Chickens (FFC)? Nothing, except that BYC are treated with some measure of kindness and respect, while most FFC aren't.

You can change that. Please make a point of signing the I-1130 petition and voting for I-1130 when it comes on the ballot this fall.

    Thank you.
