    Hi All,
My husband and I just closed on our house purchase and are excited to move next weekend! We're also going to treat ourselves to our first ever entirely new mattress - whoo-hoo!
We want to get rid of our old mattress, but feel that hauling it to the dump is wasteful. The mattress is clean and in good condition; it's probably seven-ish years old (we bought it from a friend five years ago, and she'd had it just a couple years in a guest room).
Anyway: anyone know of places in West Seattle that accept mattress donations? I already know Goodwill does not accept mattresses.

I'm also completely open to simply giving this mattress to anyone who may need one (it's queen size); just respond here and we'll work out contact info. I reallllly don't want to resort to Craigslist's free section for this. :-)

I'm soon in the same boat, upgrading and wondering what to do with the perfectly fine mattress I'm giving up. Keetsa.com (from whom we're buying our new mattress) recommends we research recycling it. ??? http://keetsa.com/about/products/

Hope you get a local in need! And if any of you miss out on Sarah Scoot's offer, you'll see another post soon for a clean Queen mattress up for grabs.

Also, it looks like Sleep Country will take a used mattress independent of a purchase...

(which could be useful since 1800GOTJUNK appears to apply their minimum charge - $127 for recycling mattresses!)

ETA: And geeeeez, congratulations on the new casa!

Thanks, MercyMoi! We're pretty excited to move on from apartment/condo living... though there are elements of renting I'll miss. :-)
These leads are helpful; I'll check into them and update here with what I find out.

  5. I seem to remember a story here on the main page about a local guy who would come and pick up old mattresses and recycle them. If I remember. It was $50 and he was working out of the work/lofts by the admiral exits.

    .
Anyone else remember this? I was just thinking I need to look this up because I want a new mattress.
    .
Is he still in business? I thought it sounded great!

  6. seattle freecycle is fantastic way to give your mattress to a good home; I've used freecycle for years to give & receive

My wife and I just moved and no longer needed our mattress. I found that posting on Craigslist's "Free" section had 10 people asking for it within two hours.

  8. BigRed, the local mattress recycler is Bed Be Gone. I hope he's still in business - it sounded great!

Yes, thank you all! I love Craigslist - have purchased some awesome furniture for great prices - but have had frustrating experiences with the free section. A few years ago I listed a coffee table and had people set appointments and never show up. I simply don't have time right now to deal with that, and if it comes down to it we'll take the mattress with us for the move and get rid of it when we have more free time. :-)

  12. with today's sunny warm weather, do you have a curb to put it out with a free sign?
    ~
I use craigslist for many other things, and have used the 'free'; but main reason I prefer freecycle to craigslist to give away free stuff; people are much more respectful and are required to make arrangements with you; and usually follow through; and it's limited to folks who live/work in Seattle

    Hi Diane,
Thanks for the tip on Freecycle; honestly, I'd always assumed it would be just like dealing with the CL free listings. I may go that route. So many options!
...But curb is not an option. We currently live in a condo building with a very active association that pretty strictly enforces CC&Rs. :-) They would not be thrilled if I threw a mattress out in front.

  14. When I used Freecycle back east, and also in Lynnwood when I first moved out here, I had more no-shows than not. It's why I won't use them now.

It's not clear if the Bed Be Gone place is still at ActivSpace or even run by the same person. The website is worded weirdly, that it's a Seattle area company started by (the name of the guy - matthew?) but if you click on the link for where to drop them off, it's a Bellevue location. And their facebook page directs you to a different company (same as the Bellevue location). I wonder if he sold it off to someone else? I'm not inferring there are any problems, but it may no longer be local. And the price is more than the $50 from when they were profiled here on WSB.

Is a mattress something that is usable at Nickelsville? I haven't been there, so wasn't sure if mattresses can be used in tents without being weather ruined.

  15. I only have had great experiences with craigslist. When I listed a mattress I had a car full of college guys picking it up within a couple of hours. One guy surveyed the Queen sized Beauty Rest and said, "Isaac, you always luck out." So I was pleased. They were respectful and kind.

  16. agree with dhg; when I need to give something away, I usually post on both freecycle and craigslist; 90% excellent experiences

The South Park union Gospel Mission apartment fire victims need beds. The homepage article was just updated with list and where to drop off items.

Yes, just saw that post. I'm sad that a catastrophic fire caused this need, but happy it was posted before I listed the mattress on Craigslist. I'd rather it be used by a group with a strong need.
