Anyone else notice a shortage of spiders this year? Last year at this time I was clearing webs every time I did yard work or walked out the slider. And there were some BIG @ss 8 legged freaks... This year, I haven't seen any! Not in the garden, not in the doorway, not strung to the car door.

Ants on the other hand - plenty to go around! I miss those darn arachnids

  3. You are right, I do have a nest in my car. I don't know what to do, I feel very bad that I probably kill them on accident.

We got plenty here. You can see their fresh, new spun webs on our balcony every morning doing what they're supposed to be doing. They help keep the daddy long legs in check. I've noticed that there are a lot of wasps though.

Maybe they're just holding out for Summer to finally arrive...

The weather has hindered plant growth. Insect populations increase with available plant material. Spiders increase with available insect food. It's all related - nature is funny that way. Besides, it's really too early for large spiders; the big, fat Araneus (common orb weavers)don't 'appear' until August or September after a summer of feasting, mating, then swelling with eggs. There are babies everywhere right now. Just wait.

I usually notice a huge increase in spider population in July.

It's not really population so much as the fact that certain ubiquitous species are reaching a size that makes them noticeable...

I was just saying yesterday that those itty-bitty tiny-winy baby spiders are starting to hatch out. Saw some in my yard and just hoping they don't infest our car.

Spiders don't form nests or create infestations. The baby spiderlings disperse fairly quickly, as they are cannibalistic. If it weren't for spiders, you WOULD see insect infestations that could create far greater problems than some unfounded fears.

  12. We had a spider nest in the corner of our garage door. The babies were in the process of dispersing. We found some eggs too....after the ants found them and started carting them off.

Maybe the spiders can't afford to travel this year because of the bad economy still...:)

  15. They were so upset by the debacle of the Spiderman musical that they are hiding in shame. Slugs, on the other hand, never feel shame about anything; they just keep sliming along.
