I am considering making the switch from All-Star (for a myriad of small reasons), so am curious as to the experiences of others at either location. I am most interested in the yoga/strength/spin classes: instructors, class sizes, etc. I would also like opinions on their swim lessons for younger children. Much appreciated.

  2. I have had memberships at both the Y and at All-Star. I never used the Fauntleroy Y, just the WS one.

I don't know much about yoga and strength classes because I never took them, but they always seemed somewhat full.

Spin Class - loved spin class with Dennis at the Y but the room was very, very small and only fans for air conditioning. AllStar has a much better spin class setup.

Exercise Equipment. There is a lot more equipment at AllStar and there is a lot more room at AllStar for working out. At the Y - the cardio/machine weights room seems to always be crowded, as well as the free weights room. Granted there is also a lot more people at AllStar, especially if you go at peak times, but the Y just seems really cramped.

However, for a more family environment and swimming lessons, the Y would probably be your best bet. I will be going back to AllStar and not the Y later this year, but I also don't have younger children and AllStar fits my needs better. My older kids (teens) can also workout at AllStar (but can't at the Y).

Too bad there isn't a better alternative with a swimming pool, a family environment, cleanliness and large and roomy...

I would suggest asking for a 2 week trial membership at the Y to see if you like it for you.

    Carterbiosea,

I use both facilites but mostly Fauntleroy (FL)
There are cycling classes morning and evening at both West Seattle and Fauntleroy Y.

The cycle room @ WS has I think 16 bikes and has moved recently into a larger space.
I've done classes with Lisa and Laura @ FL and they are great. Fl has 15 bikes and you can usually get into class with no problem. (It is January if you know what I mean)

There are several awesome yoga instructors at both sites and I love the Pilates reformer studio and instructors.
The FL yoga classes are in an intimate space but rarely over crowded.Ussually about a dozen in class there.
WS Yoga in the fitness studio has bigger classes, 20-30.

Not sure if you are am or pm but Eli and Kacie have some kick bu@@ strength classes.
Some of the small group trainings offered are outstanding.

Love the people and the whole community feel of the Y.

Great pool at WS and lots of activities for the whole family.
As a Greater Seattle Y member you get to use any facility in Greater Seattle. I occasionally go to the new Matt Griffen by SeaTac just for fun.
During January the joining fee is waived. No big contract to sign. If you decide it doesn't work for you. You cancel.
They have class calendars for both WS and FL on their website.

  4. I'm a big fan of Ys, because they are so friendly. Plus there are no sales people. Very straightforward, nothing slick.

You can also get exchange privileges all over the place. I've used them from NYC to Vancouver.

Some are quieter than others. I wish they weren't adding televisions and sound systems. People talked more with each other than they do now.
