  1. I just realized there was a Produce Company in West Seattle. It's on Fauntleroy near Alaska. I checked their website and it looks like they have been around for a long time.

We are somewhat new to the area..but just wanted to point it out in cause others don't realize it's there.

The produce looks really fresh and yummy. I was sorta hoping for more organic stuff since they have a huge sign that says ORGANIC. But still..it's better looking produce than I have seen at the store.

  2. ok, actually I just found the article on here that this is a new location. I remember reading that but thought it was something different. Anyways, worth checking out.

Oh and they had some really cool looking salsa in jars.

I stopped for the first time last friday. I bought a tomato that was so fresh that I ate the whole thing. I bought some pasta that I can't wait to eat. I found some incredible strawberries and a Giant Elephant Garlic. Prices seem to be right in line for what you are getting (fresh and delicious). Give them a try if you haven't done so yet.

  4. In addition to WS Produce, which indeed opened earlier this spring (but is related to a business with a long history), there is another produce stand in West Seattle, further south - Tony's Produce. Not as big a setup as West Seattle Produce, but since you mention "I just realized there's a produce stand in West Seattle" - there is more than one. Tony's is at 35th and Barton, a few blocks west of the Westwood Village shopping center.

And if you go south to White Center, there are multitudes.

  6. Has anyone compared prices to McPherson's on Beacon Hill? We drove by W.S. produce last night but didn't have time to stop.

I live near Tony's but don't go there any more. I would not call the produce fresh, and the last batch of sweet corn I bought there (non-organic, even) was so teeming with worms that I had to throw the whole bunch away. Thanks for the reminder to check out WS Produce.

A lifetime ago I worked in a wonderful little complex in Ann Arbor, Michigan that had various specialty food shops under one roof. Produce, meat, fish, wine, cheese, deli, French take away, etc. It was a wonderful way to shop & I've never seen that model elsewhere.

I keep meaning to post a rave about this place. I went a couple weeks ago to buy my week's worth of produce and was pleasantly surprised that they had everything on my list and it was all great. Nice people and cute place!

  9. anonyme...

if you had taken the corn back to Tony's, they would have refunded your money and likely replaced it with the freshest produce they had...

    i know.. i have.

and if Tony is in and feeling well, he will personally lead you to the freshest produce in the stand and help you pick out the best of the lot.

All you have to do is ask.. what's fresh today? ... or in my case.. what's fresh and local today?

the Seattle version of that little complex in Ann Arbor is called the Pike Place Market and they are open every day:)

  10. Good grief, one bad batch of corn and it's "NEVER AGAIN"? You're going to have a hard time finding a vendor who can meet your standard. Any place that sells produce will occasionally have some quality issues. Even fruit that looks great on the outside can be rotten inside. You'd have to cut each piece open to find all the bad ones. Tony knows he wouldn't retain customers by passing off bad produce on them. He would have made it right if you'd given him the chance.

I tried W. Seattle Produce and they were nice and all but I didn't find it much better than Tony's. I like Tony's and will probably stick to going there.

  12. I tried WS Produce last week and was really impressed with the quality. Plus, they carry a bunch of stuff from Remlinger Farms and tea from the Minglement on Vashon. You can also get fresh eggs and Beecher's cheese. It's a totally different business vibe than what Tony's is. I like Tony's and I like WS Produce - there's definitely room for both in my life.

pam - it's completely different than McPherson's on Beacon Hill (which in my opinion is a bit of a shame). West Seattle already has so many places to buy fresh organic produce, e.g. the Farmers Market, Met Market, Tony's, etc.

The quality at McPherson's isn't always the greatest, but you can pick and choose and always find some great stuff at unbelievably cheap prices - like crazy cheap. If you haven't been there before you will be AMAZED at their prices.

WS Produce Co. is targeting a completely different market. You get what you pay for, but the pricing is high. Guess they're banking on the assumption that residents of West Seattle have more money to spend (and are willing to spend it on the highest quality produce) than those on Beacon Hill.

It's a great place, but we probably won't be visiting as often as we had hoped since we can't afford it all the time and there are other places that have similar quality around.

We'll most likely end up splitting a box of Pioneer Organics with friends if we decide to go the organic route this summer.

  14. wheee. pioneer organics hasn;t been around for awhile. they got bought up by SPUD and the quality and customer service became intolerable. plenty of CSA's out there. full circle farm is our choice!

  15. Thanks Village Green. While I try to support local (and small) business, my budget comes first. We will certainly check them out, but may stick to McPhersons - if for no other reason then the great tamale's on the weekends! haha

I also live near Tony's and had to stop buying there because their produce either made me sick or it was so dirty I couldn't stand it. I did take some stuff back and they gladly swapped but then it just got to be too much, so I stopped buying there.

So I was eager to try the new place and was very pleased with what I got, fresh, tasty and clean!

A couple of clarifications: it was not "one bad batch of corn" that made me stop shopping at Tony's, but the consistently mediocre quality and the lack of organic options. I shop by bus or on foot, and running back and forth to check quality day by day or having to return or exchange produce that belongs in the compost bin is out of the question.

Pike Place Market is not at all like what I was describing. I love the Market (used to work there, too - stopped at Frank's today as a matter of fact) but not the same model at all. This place was small and easily accessible, and each vendor was very high quality. I guess quality is the main issue, so I still plan to check out WS Produce - if I can find a convenient way to get there on the bus!

finally got by WS Produce today - loved it! They also have a small "garden center" - plants, etc. Loved the quality, the variety, and Remlinger Farms options. Prices were pretty good or average. Oh! they also have Seattle's Own Shortbread cookies. The people there were very friendly and helpful in selecting the produce. I'll definitely make this a regular stop.
