Craig's List put up this warning a few days ago; I'm praying they don't go dark, since it's main source of job ads; otoh, if no one can get into work due to snow, guess they won't be placing job ads anywayPosted 4 months ago # -

if these sites go black, I think it's just for the day, so it won't be a huge impact as far as longevity...but I'm betting people will be annoyed...

As one with rental properties I almost solely use Craigslist to get the word out, as well as to sell items from time to time.
If they were to be shut-down for any length of time then my bottom line would certainly be affected.

We support the effort to fight these bills but cannot go dark for obvious reasons. - TR

I have to agree with sbre on this one, as a person counting on CL to help find employment, ANY down time is bad.

The protest is on. Check out Wikipedia.

check out google's logo for today, for that matter. most people go through google to get to wikipedia and anywhere else, and it's great that they're on-board.
the politics of this legislation is weird, too. ron wyden - the pot-smoking hippy senator from oregon - is sponsoring this big-business-friendly legislation in the senate, and the tea party millionaires are against it.
go figure.

sbre and ezzomr191: exactly why you should call patty murray and maria cantwell, tell them you are opposed to these bills, and urge them to vote in your interest.
capitol hill switchboard: (202)225-3121
maria cantwell: (202) 224-3441
patty murray: (202) 224-2621
if you can't afford the long distance charges, the switchboard has toll-free numbers, but these evidently change a lot. so they may not be current.
866-338-1015
877-851-6437
877-210-5351
edit:
just to be clear, when you talk to cantwell and murray's offices...
PIPA (protect intellectual property act) is senate bill 968. first procedural vote is scheduled for 1/24/12.
SOPA (stop online piracy act) is house bill HR 3261. according to CBS and wapo, it's been tabled for now. no votes scheduled.
and it appears that politics are making even stranger bedfellows over these bills. AFL-CIO supports SOPA, as does the U.S. chamber of commerce and big pharma.
gotta get ahold of richard trumka and ask him what the hell he's thinking. i know the actors' guilds and such have an interest in protecting intellectual property, but this ain't the way to do it.

redblack~thanks so much for that info.
I had already planned on letting my voice be heard today and you just made it a lot easier for me and others.
Thanks dude/dudette!!!

Cantwell is already on record opposing SOPA and PIPA, Murray hasn't indicated which way she would vote. I haven't been able to track down any info on our various and sundry Reps.
How about THIS for a good law to follow: if you don't want to give it away for free and for it to eventually be available to every internet user in the whole World, don't post it on the internet. Problem solved, civil liberties protected.Posted 4 months ago # -
no problem. gotta check on "baghdad" jim mcdermott, too. not entirely sure i can take his vote for granted this time.
jim mcdermott:
seattle (206)553-7170
DC (202)225-3106i wanted to post murray and cantwell's local office numbers, too, but the senate's site is really slow for me today.
in fact, internet in general is a bit laggy today. i wonder if it has anything to do with the voluntary blackout.

Anyone contact Al Gore to see if he gave his permission?

well, it worked - for now. good job, people!
from the washington post:
stay vigilant. not sure i trust the senate not to pull some late-night back room deal to get big entertainment corporations their way, playing fast and loose with freedom of expression on the internet.
RIAA and MPAA are dinosaurs, and they need to change their ways to come to terms with technological progress - instead of trying to make the internet devolve to fit their dead business models.
and any claims that they give a flying crap about artists and their paltry royalties are hokum. they're more interested in big, global sales numbers and preserving lucrative, exploitative contracts.

redblack..
me neither..
but public opinion does matter
even in this day and age of purchased power..it seems that at least in an election year our representatives do recognize that it still takes voters to get elected

does anyone know much about the anti-piracy bill that our senator Maria Cantwell is promoting?
i don't have little grey cells enough today to go look it up and pay attention to the details.
Posted 4 months ago # -
jo: it's called the OPEN act.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/248525/sopa_pipa_stalled_meet_the_open_act.html
HR 3782, introduced wednesday, 1/18/12, by darrel issa (r-ca), who makes my skin crawl.
the text of the bill is here, in an easier-to-read format than thomas:
http://www.keepthewebopen.com/
i'm still reading the text of the bill, but it seems to be less intrusive and less favorable to big money, with more due process available to anyone accused of "copyright infringement."
