Really, is I-90 closed from Bellevue to West Seattle? Someone just called in sick for a 10pm to 10am shift, because "it's snowing so hard and I 90 is closed." REALLY? Why can't I find this on the news or the internet anywhere.....Have I just been hoodwinked?

Thanks Jan and abstract, no they were coming from mid-town Bellevue. Having grown up in the mid-West with real snow and real storms, I have a hard time with some of the weather-weenies I work with. I know I need to give them a little break because some of them grew up near the Equator....but the pre-freeking about what might happen makes it a little harder on keeping EEs staffed where they ought to be....on the other hand I may be eating a little crow within the next 24-36 hours....Wullsee,wussie drivers.

just remember, Vanessa...in the mid-West you have real snow, real storms...and real snow removal equipment, and no hills, like in Seattle..
still, your employee wasn't exactly honest....

like Jan said, it's not so much the snow; it's the ice and hills and lack of snow removal here
~
I lived on the eastside, bordering Bellevue my 1st yr in WA; it gets hit much worse than most Seattle neighborhoods during snow/ice
~
I’ve also lived in the mountains, Idaho, with tons of snow; the streets were flat; and isn’t Midwest pretty darn flat? completely different from snow/ice in hilly Seattle
~
are you really calling your employees "weather-weenies" and "wussie drivers" in a public forum? yikesPosted 4 months ago # -
Hi Diane, no no, just me trying to be a little funny.....but I do think my EE exaggerated her report to get out of work. Then made it hard for us to restaff something between 10 and 11pm....All is good. And I love the heck out of my EEs. In fact I am so blessed with whom I work with, I count my blessings everyday.

Another Midwest transplant here -- Chicago to be exact. Vanessa, I don't know how long you've been here, but I have to say the snow is VERY different here. Midwest snow is dry because the extreme cold sucks a lot of the extra moisture out of it. When it packs down you can actually get traction on it. Add a little sand and you're good to go. Plus it's mostly flat terrain.
Here, the snow is super-saturated and icy. The temps rarely go below about 20 degrees. That makes the snow extra slippery and nearly impossible to get traction, especially when the temperature is closer to freezing. Add steep hills to that, and it really gets treacherous.
I learned this the hard way the first year I lived in the city. Driving to a 6am work shift, one inch of snow on the ground, I figured "I can handle this, what's the big deal?" The big deal was the icy slipperyness. I turned a corner, slid into the curb, and did about $1200 damage to my car. That cured my skepticism about Seattle snow, and I now have a healthy sense of concern when the snow starts to fall. :)

Not sure what an EE is, but give her some slack. People's comfort zones with snow driving are different. Maybe she exaggerated, lied, whatever, because she was afraid of how you'd react. Maybe she really was told that 90 was closed--heck, even the news will say something misinformed like that and never correct it (e.g., 90 doesn't go to West Seattle). Maybe offer her RT cab fare if you need her that badly. (All that said, if this is the 8th problem you've had with her, then ... do somethin' about that bigger picture.) I told all my folks to stay home and work today, but they're not "EEs."
