We can water our plants, and water our pets...we can provide water to our neighbors. It's for two weeks (until B & C return and resume their DAILY water delivery--DAILY!!??), from July 8 until July 23, and I figure we can all take a day or two and deliver 10 gallons of water...10 plastic one-gallon jugs; 5 2-gallon jugs, 2 5-gallon jugs...whatever. What they need is a commitment of ten people/ten gallons a day DELIVERED for the next two weeks (you could certainly bring more). I'll keep posted schedule here, and you can either respond here or at my email: angelescrestk at gmail dot com. (Yes, I'll make sure plastics are recycled to the best of my ability.) A morning delivery is probably best.
    A true community effort.

Not much response. Perhaps bloggers could persuade our local businesses to drop off water during these two "dry" weeks? I suppose I could do pick-up, if that were necessary.

Water needed. I would really like to set-up a schedule.

  5. Thanks again, angelescrest.

At last night's Camp meeting, NV staffer Scott M. requested that our supporters/donors out in WSB'er land set up something on that end with a scheduler person, and truck for hauling.

Essentially, that is what is trying to be established here already.

    Thanks again, everyone!

I delivered 50 (thanks to Bartell's for their help; thanks to Fulay). In return, I received approx. forty emptied bottles which two children and I will fill and re-deliver. BUT, I don't want to be doing this alone. It's a no-brainer: please help by getting in touch with me to coordinate. Either for delivery, pick-up, wash and refill of plastic bottles, or to purchase (about 89 cents a gallon).
    Thanks,
    Kim

MIWS--We just refilled 33 plastic bottles. Can you tell me how many more bottles you have at NV (these are gallon size)? We'd like to have an inventory of 100.
    Thanks!

  12. I am not clear on the logistics of this thing. I might be able to help out but I need more info.

Are their any containers to fill and return?
Are any of them 5 gallon?
Is there a nearby site to fill the jugs or should we be prepared to take them home to do the refill?

I don't have a vehicle that can carry a lot of weight but I am not very far from the camp compared to some others.

  13. ac, got your voice mail, but had trouble hearing it what with all of the background noise. Can you reprint here what the message was?
    Thanks!

Ken, we have some of the 5 gallon(?) water cooler type jugs, some 6 gallon jugs that look like large, plastic gas cans, and a couple smaller ones. Gina, who lives in the Admiral District has offered to be a source for the water.
    Thanks to you too!

    MIWS (and Ken)--
The basic premise from the "water angels" was to have a continued drop-off of approx. 100 gallons a day. Today we purchased 50 1-gallon plastic jugs of water, dropped them off and emptied about 10, taking another 33 (including the new empties) back home to refill and redeliver. In total, there are about 70 1-gallon jugs in rotation, BUT they are not always ready to be filled. I would like to have 30 more 1-gallon jugs in rotation (89 cents a piece, max.). There are, as Mike says, some larger containers (3 in my car, which I will attempt to lift tomorrow a.m.). I am concerned that no one has volunteered via the WSB to help out with the delivery of the water. I am getting my neighbors and parents from my daughter's school to pitch in.
Why isn't everyone jumping to help? This water is for drinking; believe me, there are no showers available at NV. It's not the taps that are needed; it's the schlepping of the water back and forth, and maintaining a schedule for drop off and pick-up which I have offered to do...ad nauseum.

Dire need of blankets, as well.

Angelescrest, I can purchase 10 1-gallon jugs tomorrow (Saturday) and take them down, probably early afternoon. I have a totally unpredictable work schedule, so can't commit to anything past Monday, but I could do the dropoff tomorrow for you. If something else would work out better, let me know; otherwise I'll be down there with 10 gallons of water tomorrow.

Has anyone from Nicklesville gone over to the local business (Pacific Plumbing, Subway, Coffee Shop, etc)and introduced themselves and ask about using their faucets to fill water (During the time when there is no delivery)? I noticed that Dantheman from Pacific posted today about a sale that is happening over there. So I would think that if he knows about the blog to post about their sale he might be a regular and follow Nicklesville.

For longer solutions has Nicklesville thought about putting rain collection barrels (maybe they have some already) on their wish list for grey water use. And then perhaps a drinking water collection tank, so that when people bring water (if they are regular deliverers) they could drop off the water and immediately take containers for the next day.

This may already be on the wish list but if not I thought I might suggest it.

    Posted 10 months ago #
  22. nighthawk...

right now they don't have enough roofs to make grey water collection feasible...
but i agree that it's a great idea.

it's a great idea for all of us.

  24. I'll try to bring some water (10-20 gal) this afternoon, angelescrest. Not sure when because I'm full time parent today of a preschooler, so my activities are somewhat dependent on her mood and sleep schedule.

Can you tell me where to go? I know it's been mentioned on the forums before, but I'd appreciate it if you could just tell me.

    Thanks!

PS: I may be able to make this a regular delivery for the time that the jamjets are gone. I don't have a large vehicle, but it's something anyway. I was planning just to purchase gallon containers to bring down there. Hope that is ok. And I could bring back empties to deliver tomorrow.

I have some blankets to bring down there if they're still in need, as well.

    Chrisma--thanks!
Logistic update: There are now enough containers at NV. There are empties in my car totalling over 100 gallons or more; too much for my car to handle. I think I have there is another parent who will grab these and refill 'em and deliver tomorrow a.m. A cursory glance/chat at NV determined that there was enough water until tomorrow, so we're covered for today. I think that a typical car can haul 50 gallons, so--again--it's logisitcs...who can retrieve/fill/redeliver the containers.

I'll start in the water brigade tomorrow. Someone should check out the Nickelsville FB page (MIWS). They have a note about a water collection effort -- people are supposed to contact Scott so I suspect he could use some help if he has names.

FB page name is Nickelsville -- it's public so you should be able to post to it.

10 gallons dropped off today and I brought four containers back to refill - all they had for empties. I'll bring those back today or tomorrow.

I'll check the FB page too.

Charla--I think we got it going via the WSB. It would be easier to keep it on one place. Tomorrow is covered with the 100+ gallons in my trunk(thanks FL). I think Community School WS has the next day--and with elika/chrisma, there'll be extra efforts.

    Posted 10 months ago #
  30. I don't do FB much, so it's a bit of an afterthought for me.

However, contacting Scott would be a good idea. He's has been ongoing in his concern of the logistics of this for the last several days.

Chrisma, NV is at 7116 West Marginal Way SW, near the southeast corner of the intersection of W Marginal and Highland Park Way SW.

    Thanks to everyone again!

Chrisma, NV is directly across from the plumbing supply place - as MIWS said, the southeast corner of the intersection. If you're coming down Marginal Way, they're on the left just past the intersection. There is a large parking lot there - pull in and you'll see the steps going over the berm. That's NV. Lots of people will be willing to help you unload.

  36. Thanks miws and elikapeka, for the location info, but I'm afraid I'm a bit confused now. I got that there are containers, and what would be really useful is the transport and filling of those containers. I happen to be a renter and my landlord pays the water bills, so I'm sorry, but I don't feel ok with agreeing to fill 100 or even 50 gallons of water every day. I could maybe do 20 gallons at my home.

However, if there is a water source, I would be happy to try to help transport and fill a portion of those containers. I have a Ford Escort Sedan, so I don't think more than 50 are going to reasonably fit, and I may have my daughter with me, which limits the backseat area.

It sounds like the next couple of days are covered already, so I guess I want to know when it would be most useful to arrive and help out.

I work from home most days and have a fairly flexible schedule, so I think I could work in a once a day, or couple times a week round trip. I will be out of town 7/14 to 7/22 though, which I guess limits my availability more than I realized when I first posted. Sorry for that.

Anyway, I'm happy to to help this coming week.

Also, feel free to email me directly. My username links to my email and I can give you a local number to call me on if that's easier.

    Thanks, all.

Chrisma, I only took ten gallons yesterday. Not trying to stop on the organizer's toes at all, but if people are shying away because they think they have to do 50 or 100 gallons, you don't. Just do what you can do....if it's 50 gallons or five. Lots of us can probably chip in if we just do five or ten gallons. I was down there yesterday and they only had four empties, so that's what I'll be taking back.

  43. if you can only take a limited amount of water in gallon containers.. could i suggest delivering it frozen?

the second critical need in the camp is for ice to keep donated perishables good long enough to consume them.

  48. Question (Just curious):
When NV first set up, BEFORE WSB-forum-land got involved with providing daily water runs, how were they getting their water? Were there plans in place ro obtain daily water needs?

    Posted 10 months ago #
  49. Jo..
The day i discovered there was insufficient water at Nickelsville, the mother of one of the residents had been supplying as many 5 gallon containers as her car could carry when she was able.

If there was any other short term solution planned, i have not heard about it.

the long term solution involves even temporary permission by the city council to occupy this location which would make it legal for them to connect to local water and sewer sources.

    Posted 10 months ago #
  50. Does anyone know what business/company owns the building right next to NV? Or how to find out who owns it?

When I was there today delivering water and ice, I saw it and asked Mike (miws) if they had considered asking about possibly working something out with that property owner to secure a water connection via hose in the interim, while the city council considers their request for a NV connection.

Mike said that idea hadn't occurred to him and didn't think anyone had explored it.

Now, I have no idea if that building even has water service, or how the owner might feel about helping out NV, but it seemed worth looking into. No slight whatsoever to the amazing efforts of everyone who is making possible the delivery of 100+ gallons of water every day, but it does seem a big waste of resources.

I had my 3 year old daughter with me today, so I wasn't able to stay and ask all the questions that came to mind, but I was wondering if NV had any resources to pay for water should they be able to get a connection?

I would have to assume any deal with the neighboring property owner would involve someone creditworthy to agree to take financial responsibility for the charges accrued. But with the current level of community involvement, that seems like a hurdle that can be cleared.

    Any thoughts, anyone?
