JoBParticipantI am going to paraphrase something i saw on facebook today… it went something like this..
every day the news media reports on what is happening in our government..
they frame them in the context of this is a score for democrats or this is a score for republicans
while politics as a sport may be entertaining
have you even wondered whether what they were reporting is good for the American people?
that’s the one questions that isn’t getting answered.
and it’s the one question we all should be asking.

wakefloodParticipantAgreed, JoB. The whole notion of this nation having merely two options on every topic, one per party and the keeping of the score is ONLY in the best interests of the two party apparachik. There’s a quote about voting (or not) from David Foster Wallace that sums up my notion on that semi-related topic but touches succinctly upon your OP as well. It goes like this…
“If you are bored and disgusted by politics and don’t bother to vote, you are in effect voting for the ENTRENCHED ESTABLISHMENTS of the two major parties, who please rest assured are not dumb,AND ARE KEENLY AWARE THAT IT IS IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO KEEP YOU DISGUSTED AND BORED AND CYNICAL and to give you every possible reason to stay at home doing one-hitters and watching MTV on primary day. By all means stay home if you want, but don’t bullshit yourself that you’re not voting. In reality, there is no such thing as not voting: you either vote by voting, or you vote by staying home and tacitly doubling the value of some Diehard’s vote.”
Back to your OP question – I can’t imagine a piece of trustworthy research that wouldn’t suggest that this country has done nothing short of DE-EDUCATING its general populace over the last 40+ yrs. with regards to anything related to civics or self-governance, or how to make our union/society function better. And what we see for “news” is a huge component of that (remember the film Network, folks?). All one needs to know about that is that disinformation masquerading as Faux news passes for a reliable source in our society.

skeeterParticipantThe gridlock is incredibly frustrating. Although you guys know I lean to the right of most in West Seattle I’m actually hoping that the Dems can take the House and keep the Senate this mid-term election. With one party in control we could actually make some progress on so much important work our country needs – immigration, energy, tax reform, etc. We’ve fallen into a hopeless tailspin. 8 years caught up in war (Bush years) followed by years of political bickering and deadlock (Obama years.)

JoBParticipantskeeeter..
the sad truth is that we shouldn’t need one party to make progress…
No Republicans voted for the ACA.
That was democrats who compromised healthcare reform away and got NOTHING in exchange :(
those big bad republicans we had to pacify were just an illusion…
it’s all a dog and pony show
and we deserve better than this!
