Wanted: Female Doctor with \"Good Vibe\"

I just moved back to West Seattle after a 5 year hiatus. I had been living in Magnolia and found the most amazing doctor, Dr. Jessica Wecsh. She was kind, informative, easy to talk to, all around the best doctor I\'ve had since I was a teenager. But I don\'t have a car, and it is a lot for me to take a bus all the way to Magnolia and then home again. So I want to find a good West Seattle doctor. I\'d prefer a female who does both general practice and OBGYN type stuff. I\'ve been to a few docs on an emergent basis, but either they haven\'t been my fave or they aren\'t \"one stop shopping\" as a GYN. Any suggestions?

My personal opinion is that \"most amazing doctors\" are really hard to find and are worth travelling to. I actually go up to Mukilteo for my doctor because I love her that much to make it worth it. I do sympathize with the Magnolia bus trip though - I used to have to go to regular weekly meetings in Magnolia by bus.

I\'m just hoping maybe someone has knowledge of someone great in the WS area. If I\'m sick, I want to have someone I can go to without having to suffer on the bus or leave an hour and a half before my actual appointment to get there. I\'m leaning towards just going back to my doctor in Magnolia, but I\'d like to see my other options.

I was just about to post Jill\'s name when I saw JG\'s recommendation so I can only second it. We\'ve both been going to her since we\'ve lived in WS and she\'s been great! Empathic -- a Brit so she has healthy attitudes toward health care systems, and just generally a good person!

I would recommend Grace Chapman at the West Seattle Community Care Clinic. She is a nurse practitoner. Her phone number is 937-9722 and the address is 5410 California Ave SW. She is located across the street from Westside Pharmacy and kitty corner from West Seattle Nursery.

I go to Swedish West Seattle because it\'s close and I can walk. Like: Dr. Leslie Tregillis. She has a very professional demeanor, and I find her to be very caring as well.

Bernicki - I was just about to suggest Dobrina Okorn, whom I like very much and have never had any problems with her style or care. I feel very comfortable with her and she always spends as much time with me as is required. She has my recommendation.

You know, I just edited my post, because I thought about what I had said and realized that just because I had a bad experience with a doc doesn\'t mean others will have the same. And, this is technically a topic about doctors people recommend. My mistake.

Bernicki, I didn\'t see your post pre-edit; it\'s up to you, but if there was a bad experience you had with a dr., I think that it would be valid to share in a thread like this. Yes, it\'s a post asking for recommendations, but if it were me asking for them, I\'d want to hear all experiences.

I once went to a doctor in Manhattan who was the worst doctor to ever walk the earth - oh my god, what a horrid, humiliating experience I had there. At work we would have people send out emails asking for recommendations, and I would always briefly share my experience with that dr. so people could make a decision. Perhaps she was a great doctor for some, but obviously not for me.

I\'m sad, I tried to make an appointment with Jill Summerfield and she is no longer taking new patients. Then I tried making an appointment with Leslie Tregillis and I couldn\'t get in until the end of July/beginning of August. Obviously they are popular. So I went ahead and made an appointment with my Magnolia doctor because I just don\'t want to wait months and months to be seen to discuss my current health issues/questions.

Were you specifically trying to schedule a \"physical\"? Those are typically scheduled far out because they require a larger block of time and are not considered urgent. Perhaps you\'d have better luck getting an appointment for a specific concern, then you\'d be in as a patient. I see Tregillus and generally get in within a week if it\'s not serious and more quickly if it is. Of course, sometimes I\'ve had to see a different doctor at the clinic if I needed to be seen soon and my doctor wasn\'t available.

The thing is, if you are a new patient the appointment has to be longer due to policy in that clinic. Plus, I really wanted to see Dr. Summerfield and wasn\'t sure about Tregillus yet, so I was a little flustered on the phone and the girl I was speaking to was rather unhelpful. For instance, when I asked if there was a Dr. Tregillus there and if she was taking new patients, she said \"there are a few doctors here taking new patients, but not Dr. Summerfield\". I didn\'t even know if Tregillus was there or not and it took a lot to get that info out of her. It was so difficult I was like, nevermind, I\'ll call back if I want to make an appointment.

Oh, and Charla? Go ahead and \"recommend\" me. I have an appointment with my old doctor in the beginning of May, but I\'d eventually like to make a transition to someone here.

missaudreyhorne, I\'m sorry you had difficulty with the appointment desk. The staff at that clinic is the kindest and most helpful I\'ve found anywhere, and I go to a lot of doctors. I\'d suggest you ask to make an appointment with any female doctor who\'s available and see if you like her. I sometimes can\'t get in to see my regular doctor if she\'s booked up and have to go to another one. With one minor exception a long time ago, I\'ve liked all of them. Finding a new doctor is always a chancy thing. You just have to try them out.

I absolutely agree with KL about the staff, but they\'re incredibly overworked these days. Looks like they either cut back on support or, for some reason, hired some new folks. Waiting rooms full--lines to check in--etc. Still the best place I\'ve ever seen.

Miss Audrey -- I just left a message for Dr. Summerfield\'s office to call me Monday -- it was like recommending a puppy for adoption--\"she\'s very young and healthy -- not at all like me\" :-) I\'ll let you know.

I recommend Dr. Dobrina Okorn at Swedish West Seattle. She has been our family doctor and OBGYN for a number of years and we have never had any bad experience with her. She is very caring and never rushes us through appointments, making sure she answers all our questons. Plus she\'s a nice person, you\'ll totally like her. If you can\'t get in to see her, there are other female doctors in that practice you can see before you decide on your permanent doctor. Dr. Sierra Guerra there is also a very caring an informative doctor but I\'m not sure she is still there. Good luck.

Sounds like Swedish really is as good as we\'ve always thought. BTW, if you\'re not insured, or if you choose not to bill your insurance company for everything, Swedish has a discount for \"self-pay/pay by cash.\" I believe it\'s 30 percent. Doesn\'t apply to everything, because some of their services, such as mammograms, etc., are privately contracted. But it makes a big difference for office visits, etc.

every one of those docs mentioned at Swedish Physicians on Calif. Ave. has referred patients to me...so in my book they\'re all good :)

Thanks for all the advice, and thanks for putting in a good word, Charla! I have not yet called the office because I have an appointment in two weeks with my former doctor that I am not sure I want to break yet. The thing is, it doesn\'t look like the WS Swedish clinic has any evening hours. I know most places don\'t, but it is always better for me to have something at around 5 pm instead of 4 so that I can stay at work longer. It isn\'t easy to just leave early when I want. But going all the way back to Magnolia isn\'t quite convenient either. I suppose I should try and call first to make an appointment, eh? But...just wanted to say THANK YOU, you are all great!

I go to Doctor Dobrina Okorne at Swedish- she is a very nice non judgmental,caring type-young and seems up on latest findings..i need to call as a matter of fact...definitely recommend her!

I\'m glad I could help -- they do have early morning appointments (8 a.m.) but usually only for physicals.

I\'m so glad I found this thread! I needed to see a doctor quickly to get a prescription renewed, and I got right in to see Grace Chapman and really liked her, plus she was able to refer me to two specialists I needed right away. Good vibe there. WS Blog is the go-to place for recos!
