"The only potential problem for Huff is her very professionalism -— she doesn’t have a great deal of name recognition. In contrast, some of the others have plenty of (negative) name recognition, but zero experience or competence related to the position. Facing a short timeframe for the election, it’s essential that the word gets out that Sherril Huff is the right candidate for the position. It’s essential that the voters of King County remember to fill in the oval next to the name Sherril Huff on the ballots they’ve received (or are about to receive) in the mail. And, of course, it’s essential that the voters stamp and mail their Sherril Huff ballots by February 3."

Seattle P-I Endorses Sherril Huff
"For our part, we think Huff's direct experience running elections makes her the clear choice. Huff was brought here as an assistant director to help straighten out the office in the wake of the 2004 elections mess, and became elections director in 2007. The successful 2008 election reflected the great progress she has led. Previously, she served as Kitsap County auditor, directing elections there."

3 Votes for anyone but Sherril in my household

This position has been made political but it isn't about politics...
the person holding this job will directly affect your ability to vote and your confidence that the vote you cast will be counted.
This is one time that competence really counts.
It's too easy to make the assumption that anyone can be a good manager if they have good people working for them.
We have good people employed by the city road crews and by our city bus system... but we didn't have good managers coordinating their efforts.
Imagine how much less impact the big snowstorm would have had on our economy if the people coordinating those efforts had been better managers.
Mail in voting is as easy as it gets...
all you have to do is mark your ballot and put it back in the mail.
Please take the time to check out the credentials of these candidates.. and vote now... before your ballot becomes just one more piece of junk mail.
To look at the actual applications that the candidates submitted that include both their experience and their understanding of the job keep following the links next to this election at http://www.munileague.org/ until you come to the actual questionnaires for all of the applicants...
Everything bit of information you need to decide who is the best applicant for the job is available there.
protect the quality of our election process and vote for the only candidate with substantive election processing experience.. Sherril Huff.

clark5080 - can you share why you are against Sherril Huff?

Sherril Huff was endorsed by the WS 34th district Democrats and the King County Democrats.
My houses 3 vote for Sherril will counter Clarks :)
It is up to the rest of you.
We will see what the value of name recognition is, even negative name recognition, when we see the results of low turnout, low information and raw name recognition. This scenario is by design and a result of the initiative process inherent potential for abuse.
When the Seattle Times becomes the only newspaper in town and all the tv news organizations remain corporate mouthpieces, the stealth republicans as "non partisans" will be just what the uninformed voters deserve.
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.

If there is any reason reason not to vote for Sherril Huff other than her choice of political parties...
it hasn't been reported here yet.

I will definitely vote for Sherrill Huff, I worked with her on a brief project and found her to be thoughtful and conscientious. Isn't that what we want someone in this role to bring to the table (in addition to EXPERIENCE of course)? I was just wondering what issue clark5080 had with her...?

Seattle Times
Sherril Huff endorsed for county elections job"Managing the very complicated range of election activities requires a well-rounded leader. She (Sherril Huff) has the résumé...Even some of her challengers credit her with improving King County elections...Make no mistake, it is not all hunky-dory. Significant computer challenges await any elections director and Huff may be wise to hire a few of her opponents to help...Huff has the skills, the temperament and broad knowledge of election operations for this new elective position, and she deserves voters' support Feb. 3."

Significant computer challenges await any elections director and Huff may be wise to hire a few of her opponents to help
In a city infested so thickly you cannot swing a USB mouse with out hitting half a dozen out of work computer science Phd's and programmers with decades of experience, only the seattle times would insert such nonsense into a halfhearted endorsement to indicate their sorrow that the republicans running for the position are criminally insane.

This is from a statement by Jason Osgood in December:
"Sherril Huff today announced her intention to run as a candidate in the February 3rd special election scheduled to fill the position of King County Director of Elections. Huff is currently the appointed head of the department and is now the most experienced and best qualified candidate seeking this position. Her exemplary performance in the November general election clearly demonstrated that Huff is the most logical choice in this race. I have therefore withdrawn my candidacy for King County Director of Elections, effective immediately, and am fully supporting the candidacy of Sherril Huff."
I was hoping Mr. Osgood would win Secretary of State, because he seems to have a good understanding of the perils inherent in computers and vote-counting systems, and he's passionate about the integrity of the vote. His endorsement of Ms. Huff carries a lot of weight for me.

Ken,
You are right, of course, all this "non-partisan" rhetoric was designed as a way of stealth for KC Republicans to hide who they are while attempting to latch onto the levers of power. None of the candidates opposing Huff pass the sanity or competency test (the insane have been known to get things done, though, think of Idi Amin).
It is interesting that the Times identifies computers as a challenge. KC Elections has been doing a good job introducing technology into the process. During the preparation for mailing, they know for certain that the ballot and return envelope to be sent to the voter are the correct ones using new technology. The new sorting equipment has been coupled to the voter registration system so that the voter can know when his ballot packet has been received. Those two new capabilities, and pre-existing ones, now allow a voter to go on the KC Elections website and determine where their ballot is in the process. That's new on this election. On the internet go to http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections, click on "track your ballot packet online" on the right side of the page, then follow the instructions to get a report of where your ballot is in the process.
If past "non partisan" control of elections departments by Republicans (Florida 2000, Ohio 2004) are any indications, the computer technology being referred to is that voter registration system, which, in the wrong hands, can be used to disenfranchise voters by the hundreds of thousands.
You don't need a computer geek or a gun nut as the executive in charge of that, you need someone like Sherril Huff.
