Volunteering

  1. Not sure what category this might go under, so sorry if I have it wrong. At any point, I'm planning to apply for grad school for Psychology/counseling a year or two out and will need to have performed some volunteer hours in a mental health setting prior to applying to most of the schools I'm interested in. Does anybody have any ideas of any mental health settings in West Seattle where they might need non-degreed people to volunteer? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Oh.. I need it to be on a bus line. Thanks!

It's not in West Seattle, but the Crisis Clinic would probably be a good option: http://www.crisisclinic.org/volunteer.html

Call the school(s) you will be applying to and ask if it meets their criteria, but I'm getting a master's in mental health counseling right now, and that would have qualified at my school.

You could also think about specific populations you may want to work with (for instance, if you're interested in working with LGBT youth, maybe hours at Lambert House would count).

I seriously would not limit yourself to West Seattle. If you want a competitive application, get yourself into the best volunteer site you can, and earn a great reference. This may not be the time to focus on convenience. You want a letter of recommendation from someone with a name in the mental health community. Think broadly and find something that will be meaningful to you.

  3. You might check with Transitional Resources, which operates various facilities on Avalon.

  4. Navos Mental Health is on Holden near Delridge, and accessible by bus. Don't know anything about it though...

  5. @quesera, WSB and Que... thank you all. If anybody else wants to toss some ideas this way, I'll certainly be interested in hearing them.

  6. dapuffin: At the risk of invoking a tautology, I'd say look no further than the West Seattle Blog Forums ;-)

Having lived above the junction, I would recommend just sitting in front of Key Bank with a sign.

CJB FTW! Also, King County Crisis Line. Excellent training and highly regarded volunteer venue. Not in West Seattle, but I believe they are along a bus line. Contact them directly for location.

  10. Are you interested in mental health service dogs? We have students with psychiatric service dogs. We are offering a groundbreaking service and we are looking for ways to make it better.

    Happy Tails To You!
