using ranked choice voting for primary elections: bill in Senate

  1. This bill introduced in the state senate:

adds an interesting twist to the top two primary: use Ranked Choice (you may know it as Instant Runoff) voting in the primaries. It would allow voters to rank up to three candidates in the primary. Ranked Choice procedures would be used to select the top two candidates who would go on to the general election.

I'm not a fan of the top two primary, but if we must use it, ranked choice would at least be a more democratic way of selecting candidates for the general election, because it better reflects the will of the electorate, in that voters would not have to choose between "throwing away" their vote on a minor candidate whom they support, and voting for a major candidate whom they weakly support, to prevent a candidate whom they truly dislike from winning.

  2. For those unfamiliar with the term...

This is not the method that will allow libertarians to take over the Republican party but it might be one way to stop Democrats from ignoring the concerns of green or progressive party voters between elections.

It is usually proposed in places where third party support is relatively strong but over shadowed by the majority parties.

It will probably have no effect (besides making hand counting ballots a nightmare in small counties) but in King County and Seattle it could open up some races that are usually unopposed.
