valvashonParticipantFinally got around to reading the Pacific Northwest section of the Sunday Times and found an article about all of the tunnels that run under the Puget Sound region. They show a map of the ones under Seattle, and there is one that runs East-West under the Admiral District. Does anybody have any idea of what this tunnel is for?
Here is a link to the article:

Go to picture #12 and you will see the map of tunnels.

GinaParticipantLooking at the tunnel, and where it ends up, I am 99% sure that is a sewer tunnel. Looks like it terminates at the treatement facility by Bar-S Field.

metrognomeParticipantoh poop, don’t y’all have any imagination?
I for one firmly believe it was dug during Prohibition to facilitate the smuggling of alcoholic spirits to the speakeasies in Underground Seattle in Pioneer Square. It was named the ‘Doc Maynard Tunnel’ and basically followed the route of an old Native American pathway that was used for elders who were unable to climb the Admiral Hill on their way to watch orcas and other native animals and birds that flourished before the arrival of the whites.
In more recent years, it has been proposed as a commuter pipeline between downtown and WS, but the Water Taxi was approved instead.

metrognomeParticipantJoB — if only you knew … many, many moons ago, when I first started at Metro, I was responsible for advertising and staffing a public hearing. The Clerk of the Council would publish an official notice in the newspaper of record (the Seattle Times) and I had to cut out a copy for the official file (my, how things have changed…). Anyhoo, in perusing the official notices section, I noticed one regarding a divorce that was to officially notify creditors, etc. of who was responsible for what debt … but it had one small typo and read:
“I am responsible only for my elf.”
That became my motto and has guided me ever since.

owenParticipantIt’s the West Seattle CSO Tunnel. Here’s an interesting technical paper summarizing Seattle tunneling projects. It describes the West Seattle CSO Tunnel as a 13-ft-diameter, 10500-foot-long bored tunnel completed in 1997. Page 2 of the paper shows its alignment.
