Watchout! Don't say I didn't warn you. It maybe the worst day this summer for traffic. If you start work at 9am in downtown, you'd better leave by 7am. Just a suggestion.

  2. For anyone who has missed the multiple front-page stories on why, see "CITYWIDE TRAFFIC ALERTS" link in the "BIG STORIES" list on the sidebar to the right of Mr. J's warning.

  3. Jiggers: I just finally recognized your avatar from Shogun Assassin (Lone Wolf & Cub). That infamous weaponized baby carriage.

His name is Ogami Itto, once the lead executioner for the Yagu clan who betrayed Ogami Itto by killing his wife. Ogami was an excellent swordsman as one who would have to be being an executioner for the lord. The rest is history. Amazing fight scenes and the story plots are great. The series begins when Ogami's wife was killed as Ogami also was blamed by Yagu himself who lied about Ogami Itto. Itto became an assassin for hire and would eventually seek revenge against Yagu for killing his wife. The story takes place in old Japan as you would imagine. They don't make series like these anymore such a shame...:( chrisma, I'm sure you already know about the series.

    Back to the traffic..:)

This shouldn't be a problem for people needing to be to work at 9:00AM on Tuesday. The parade begins at Seattle Center at 10:00 and proceeds downtown to the convention center. It would be foolish to leave WS for downtown at 7:00 AM.
I do wonder how quickly will it take metro to recover for the afternoon commuters wanting to go home.

it is unlikely that the parade will have a direct effect on any WS routes, given its location (it only comes south to Pike then goes east to 8th) and the fact that Metro (i.e. 5/54/55) and ST buses will be allowed to cross the parade route. There are no WS routes on Metro's events reroute list for the parade:

    http://metro.kingcounty.gov/up/rr/reroutes.html

However, general traffic delays will likely trickle down to 3rd and 1st Aves and may slow down those WS routes (the parade is set to go to 3 pm.) Plus the convention will be using 90 charter buses, which probably means lanes being closed so they can park, etc.

All in all, a good day to avoid downtown if you have that option. If you haven't already signed up for alerts for your route, you can use the above link to do that.

  10. My son has summer school at Bailey Gazert off Yesler and 13th. It is 9am to noon. Does anybody think this area would be affected?

Bonnie -- that area is pretty far south of the parade route, so it shouldn't be affected. You might check the 'Citywide Traffic Alert' link at the top of the story list on the right to see if there are any other events in that area.

Just so people know, I work just north of Pikes Market on Western Ave. I left the house at 8:15am and no traffic, even on the bridge. Got to work in about 20 minutes. Going home, I am sure that will be another story.

I left home at 9:00 AM, took a #54 downtown, no problem; no traffic; no hint of anything other than a beautiful summer morning downtown. Glad I didn't leave by 7:00 AM

I think a lot of people over-reacted to news of the parade and avoided downtown. Absolutely no commuting problems caused by the parade. My morning ride was a breeze, and the afternoon commute was normal.

Ditto AJ; less traffic than usual, actually, and I slept in a bit and didn't catch the bus along Avalon until nearly 8:00, which is when the bridge usually gets reallllly backed up.
