Just curious what people think is an appropriate age to stop trick or treating door to door. I've always thought it should stop when kids get to high school but I'm wondering what others think.

Trick or treating - until what age??

I'm definitely with you. And the teenagers these days don't even put a mask on anymore. They just show up and beg - lol. In my mind it's a "holiday" happening for younger kids who are still in fantasy mode..teenagers (well, most) don't qualify after 13. For them, maybe a party - with adults present - might be a better idea. Just MHO.

HIGH SCHOOL? My kid was only interested in trick or treating for a grand total of ONE year, can't remember now if that was 5 or 6. He's 13 now and I can't IMAGINE him going door to door ... unless maybe the neighbors were giving out flash drives instead of candy ...

Great idea TR! USB flash drives with a pre-installed virus! Now that's scary!!!

Very interesting. My 9th grader is begging to go out, claiming as always, that "everyone else is doing it". Anyone out there whose high schoolers are going out? My daughter loves to dress up and I would host a party for her and her friends if our house wasn't so torn up with our remodel.

IIRC, my first year of high school was the last year I went out until I was accompanying kids of my own. There was a large group of us and we all dressed up in costume. That was, uh, some years ago though.
Honestly, I don't mind anybody coming to my door on Halloween night looking for goodies as long as they are in costume, are polite (say "trick or treat!", don't just stand there expectantly when I open the door, and say thank you afterward!), don't look old enough to be driving themselves from house to house, and don't show up after 9pm.
A couple years ago a couple of middle- or high-school aged girls came to our door, not in costume. That year I was passing out mini tubs of play-doh instead of candy. I think they were pretty disappointed. ;)

herongrrrl hit it - teens are welcome at my door as long as they play nice and look like they tried...a football jersey alone does not a costume make!
I don't think it's odd, suzanne, I'd let her enjoy!

my fondest memory of my grandmother was when she visited us one halloween. She dressed as a witch and trick or treated with us.. and put her bag out at every door we knocked on.
the lesson i learned from grandma is that you are never too old to have fun.
kids will decide for themselves when it is no longer fun to dress up and troll the neighborhood asking for treats.
After all, it's not like there is a big resale market for all that candy the day after.
I am surprised some enterprising kid hasn't figured out how many people would gladly give up their halloween leftovers the following day.
LOL.. Some years i would have paid to have it taken away :)))

Sortof tying back to the "adult costumes" thread: if you are old enough that all you can find in a store are "sexy" costume options, you're too old. ;)
In all seriousness though, anyone who makes an effort to actually dress up is welcome to candy at my door. If you're 43 and have the chutzpah to dress up and come ask for candy, all the more power to you - I might just give ya 2 candy bars.

There are worse things the older kids could be doing.

when i was a kid... the younger kids trick or treated and the older kids just tricked..
i would rather give them candy than clean up the messes they left.
now don't i sound just like an old fart :))))
It made me laugh to realize that grandma was younger than i am now when she dressed up as a witch to trick or treat with us... yet i remember her as being so old :(Posted 2 years ago # -
The following conditions will disqualify you for candy (rather the yet to be named healthy substitute) at my house:
1. No Costume
2. Dressed like M.J.
3. Over 12
4. Disrespectful
5. Failing to say, "trick or treat."Posted 2 years ago # -
I say if you're in a costume with a trick-or-treat bag/pumpkin, you get candy no matter how old you are! It's all about fun! I'm 32 and I may be dressing up like a Chicken to take my daughter out. This was her idea and a pretty good one for a 3 year old!

bsmomma..
LOL.. you'd both get candy at my house:)))

Is she going to be an egg, bsmomma?

We hand out candy to anyone in a costume regardless of age, full-size candies and lots of them.

I trick-or-treated in costume through age 16. I just loved Halloween (and candy).

Okay, Aim, we're totally dressing up, getting in the car, driving to your house, and getting some candy. :)

NO ONE OLDER THAN 37.

damn, I just turned 38....
I will give candy to anyone, especially teenagers. Being a teenager sucks. Be nice to teenagers. As long as they aren't smashing pumpkins, they get candy!

It's all about the costume. My favorite trick-or-treaters are the ones who obviously took some care and creativity in coming up with a costume--the kids who care more that you admire their costume than for the candy. I confess to a somewhat sporadic "better costume = more candy" policy. I define better costume as one you didn't just buy at the store, or use something ordinary like a sports jersey, etc. And I'd absolutely and without reservation treat an older teen, adult, or grandma/grandpa in costume!
